When I heard a rumor last year that Kiehl’s would be discontinuing Creme D’Elegance, I panicked b/c it was an HG product for me. Seeking a replacement, the new “intense hydration” version of the Ultra Facial Cream sounded like a good idea (after all, I had only switched to Creme D’Elegance originally after I found the original facial cream to be awesome, but just not enough moisture for me.)
I was pretty encouraged by the fact that when I tried to purchase the new “intense hydration” cream from Nordstrom, they were sold out (it’s a good sign, right?) When I finally got my hands on it I was psyched to start using it immediately. But after trying it for a week… meh.
The texture of the original Ultra Facial Cream was AMAZING, and what I expected this new “intense” version to have was the same amazing texture, but with an added bump to how moisturizing it was. Unfortunately, this was not the case for me – it felt like something completely foreign when compared to the original. When you look in the jar, it is indeed thicker/creamier looking than the original – but once I put it on I realized that it was missing all of the things that made the original so great. Sure, it looked creamier, but on my skin it felt very “thin” and I didn’t find it to be more moisturizing at all – much less so than the original, in fact. It’s like it wasn’t capable of actually soaking into my skin to do its job.
With or without makeup – it didn’t matter – got the same result every time, which is that an hour after applying it, whenever I touched my skin I would get these rolling skin clumps similar to what you experience when peeling after a bad sunburn (when you drag your fingers across that peeling skin and it just rolls together?) Of course in this case, it was the layer of moisturizer that couldn’t soak into my skin effectively (and not sunburned skin) creating those rolls.
I’m sure there are people out there that love this stuff, but my advice for anyone that already loves the original Ultra Facial Cream – stick with the original, or switch to another Kiehl’s product completely: something like Creme D’Elegance (which, as far as I can tell is NOT discontinued as I originally feared) or the new moisturizing balm. Both of those are fantastic products… the “intense hydration” ultra facial cream however – not so much.

It’s fine, but I prefer the original. I wonder why the Intensive has alcohol and high up. I have this little skin analyzer and the regular cream does work better, in tests too. Still this is liglhter and bouncey textured and still quite moisturizing. It does have a low molecular hyaluronicn acid so it is a good humectant but less good than Cerave. I am not sorry I got it to use under sunscreen thinking it be lighter so I say it’s good for that. OK, I got it becasue I am obsessed with moisturizers and Kiehl’s regular ultra doesn’t break me out.
This has a lot of alcohol. It feels nice, but diesn’t work for me.
