This is a potent charcoal mask. It’s, as one would expect, a charcoal colored paste with some small chunks in it. It burns a little going on. When I rinse it off, my skin is a bit red so don’t leave this on too long. I have tried it as a spot treatment for acne overnight. My skin wasn’t overly irritated from that.
But I don’t feel like my skin is any clearer after this. Really it’s just red right after but I don’t see any other affects. And it’s quite expensive. For me, this isn’t worth it.

I received this mask as a free sample from my spa and am not impressed. Like some other Dermalogica products, it contains a cocktail of essential oils that are known skin irritants – eucalyptus and mentha – along with another irritant witch hazel. It caused my skin to tingle, which meant I had to remove it right away as my skin is sensitive. The other ingredients in the formulation look promising, but it doesn’t matter because of the addition of the skin irritants. Dermalogica should know better.

Meh. That’s all I can say about this product. Meh. After all the hype from Dermalogica’s marketing and their therapists (whom I deeply respect), I was expecting something ground breaking, something that would put the Skin Refining Masque to shame, if that’s even possible. I tried a few samples, and compared to the former, it really didn’t do anything outstanding to my oily skin. Its disappointment runs parallel with that of the Daily Superfoliant. Yay, it has charcoal, but seriously, you’re better off investing in Skin Refining Masque or indeed the MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque (I still need to further explore this range). Bit of a let down, if truth be told.

Full disclosure, I have only used this once, so I will come back and update it once I’ve used it a few more times. But, I’ve used a lot of masks in my day and do think that the initial use is worth the review.
My skin: combo, dehydrated, large pores especially in T zone, current winter dryness, mid 30s.
My routine – you name it I’ve tried it. I have a pretty extensive routine that varies in cost and ingredients, used depending on how my combo skin is doing. I am not a brand buyer, but buy based on reviews and research.
I bought this mask because of all the skin care steps, a mask is the one I probably lack on using enough and the ingredients were impressive. I am prone to clogged pores and milia due to my large pores yet dehydrated skin that produces and traps oil or heavy products, so I’m always on the hunt for something that is either a miracle worker or fits well into my current regimin. Enter this.
Texture – This goes on as a smooth, yet grainy mask due to the physical exfoliating properties in it. Unlike a mud mask, or other clay masks, I did not get an immediate cooling sensation with this one. It spread easily, and came out of the tube in the appropriate amounts. It went on as a sort of wet(ish) grainy mask that is a mud green color.
Application – was easy. I used about a quarter size to cover my face. My skin is feeling winter dry, so I only applied it to my T zone area. I made sure to be gentle when putting it on due to the exfoliators in there. It covered adequately, not too thin and not goopy.
Experience – It took about 10 min for it to really start to dry down. It dried to a light, sandy green and once it started drying felt really tight. I am well versed in physical and chemical exfoliators, so I did not get a tingle that was of any intensity and my face did not turn red, but I would caution anyone with very sensitive or dry skin against using this, at least for any extended period of time.
Washing it off – unlike some of the other masks that I’ve used, this was fairly easy to get off. I appreciated the physical exfoliators and liked that this product included a lot of things I needed in one. My face looked smooth and evened out. Blackheads were less but not completed decreased.
Overall assessment – Another reviewer wrote that this is not a mask that you’ll feel pampered using and I agree. It’s a POWER WORKER to get all the crap off/out of your face and doesn’t feel luxurious. The ingredients are known to be effective, and smell. That’s OK with me if they work. The sulfur smell (think rotten eggs) wasn’t intense to me when I put it on, but it did linger allllll night. I still smell it now. Ick. You might not want to use this one before a romantic night lol. I used a rather heavy duty moisturizer last night, but my t-zone area feels dry/tight today, a little roughed up albeit squeaky clean. Those with oily skin may want to use this a few times a week, but for me, this is no more than 1 x per week or after a heavy makeup day.
I’m very impressed with the heavy-duty ingredients in this one mask and would highly recommend it.

Being a person with a dry skin, I rarely enjoy charcoal masks all over my face. But whenever I have a rough skin day or too many breakouts to deal with – these are magic.
Dermalogica’s Rescue Charcoal Mask is amazing. This must be the most gentle formula I have ever worked with; it feels quite lightweight to the touch and should be worn for about 10 minutes. I find that whenever I use it, my pimples diminish in size, redness is reduced and overall my skin feels that extra bit purified and detoxed.
You can use it on a weekly basis, as a preventative mask or just keep it for those disaster days when your skin is misbehaving. You can read more about all the pro and contra aspects on my blog ( ). I hope you find it helpful.

I think is is best for for troubled, acne-prone, oily skin types. Not for sensitive skin at all. I have combination skin and only use this on my very oily T-zone. I uses this three times a week and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. It is a dark charcoal gray color and I use damp paper towels to remove so I do not discolor my wash cloths. This contains 5% sulfur, so it does have a sulfur scent to it. Also has mandelic acid, lactic acid, niacinamide, and tea tree oil in a kaolin and bentonite clay base. Additional ingredients are volcanic ash and peumus boldus extract, both of which are supposed to be antibacterial. Has skin soothing extracts of licorice and Vitamin B5 in the form of panthenyl triacetate. Also has galactoarabinan which is an extract from the larch tree which is supposed to act as a gentle exfoliant and minimizes water loss in the skin. After using this for a few months,I cannot say that I find this more effective than any other clay mask, high or low end brands, that I have used to treat oily skin areas on my face.
