First, about me. I have large pores, oily and textured skin. Sun damaged, aging skin. I’m using Retin A but my skin is sensitive and even at its lowest dose, it’s too irritating for around my nose, mouth and chin. I use Retin A on the perimeter of the my face and BHA on the middle. I use the 2% extra strength PC serum during the day.
I bought this a few years ago now and didn’t really see much benefit so it’s been sitting in my cupboard ever since. I recently started using a magnifying mirror, though, and nothing like doing this to really show you how big your pores are. I put this on one night, just to see if I was wrong, and in the magnifying mirror the next morning my pores were literally white and shrunk. I’ve used it now for a week and I got flakey so I’m using it every second night now. It works and now I’ve stocked up.
The texture feels like pure glycerin to me, it’s quite moisturizing and only slightly irritating. As any strong acid exfoliant would be it is a little irritating if I use it every night. It’s far too moisturizing to use during the day.
I love PC BHA, it’s the only chemical exfoliant my skin can really tolerate. I don’t love the huge price boost the products have seen in the last few years but nothing works like this does. Deciem is a joke, their BHA did nothing for my skin, not one thing. Anything else that sort of works is full of alcohol. I do wish this stuff was affordable again because right now, it’s just not.

I came across the first mention of this many years back in one of PC’s FAQ sessions on how to tackle Keratosis Pilaris (chicken skin). It was something they were planning on launching in the future. Recently whilst browsing the PC website I stumbled upon BHA 9 and realized that this was that product, although not sure how I hadn’t spotted it sooner! Purchased a tube straight away and tried it out on two areas: my t-zone and the KP on my upper right arm.
On my t-zone I wanted to see how it would work on reducing pore size if used every night and it did work great at that, I noticed them become less visible within 2 weeks as well as reducing comedones.
On my arm I chose only to apply on one side because, frankly, there isn’t much product in this 0.3 fl oz tube and besides I can get a good visual comparison between the treated and untreated side. On my arm I have noticed on week 2 that there is slightly less redness and bumpiness, however it isn’t hugely significant and not something price-wise I can justify spending on long term. However I have read if combined with a 10% urea moisturizer it can work better so I will try to add that into my routine in the morning and keep BHA 9 for night use.
For me the packaging is not such an issue as two pumps is just perfect for one upper arm plus t-zone and besides I agree with previous reviewer that if you press the pump very lightly (not actually pressing down properly to dispense) in quick succession you will get less wastage. 10 of these short pumps seem to get me about 1 drop of product which is fine for a spot treatment…oh yes this works great on healing blemishes overnight!
I just wish this was on the PC Europe website. I ran out of my tube whilst on a recent trip to Europe and it was impossible to get it online, PC just don’t have this product there for some reason. The very few other online retailers were sold out of stock. My only option was e-bay but at a prohibitive cost when including customs charges and of course by the time it would arrive from the states I would have been back there anyway!
Conclusion: Effective product, just wish it came in a bigger size and more easily available outside of the states.

This is an excellent product for when a spot pops up. I always order two at a time, it’s one of the few products I really don’t like to be without. I have super sensitive skin and I’ve never had any issues with this.

I have a very oily nose with numerous sebaceous filaments which have bothered me for many years. I’ve used many different BHA products over the years, including some of the other Paula’s Choice BHA offerings (the 2% solutions weren’t strong enough). This, along with the Resist Weekly Retexturizing Foaming Treatment 4% BHA are the only products I’ve tried that can treat them effectively.
This is intended as a spot treatment, but I use it all over my nose every night. It’s very potent though, and the awful packaging is designed to make you pump out WAY more than you need without severely irritating your skin. The trick is to make a series of very light yet rapid pumps so a much smaller amount of product is dispensed and you don’t end up wasting any. Considering the price, you’ve got to make every last bit count!
I do use this as a spot treatment too, and it tames most of my whiteheads overnight.
Overall, despite the terrible packaging I will continue to repurchase this to keep my pores as clear as they can be.

Paula’s Choice BHA9% gel solution is an unusual skin exfoliating treatment designed to treat deep blackheads, whiteheads or any kind of tiny bumps under the skin. The beta-hydroxide solution at the right pH is able to penetrate the pore lining and unclog trapped oil and dead skin cells, reducing and eventually eliminating unsightly blackheads and congested pores — and this stuff really works as promises! It is quite powerful. A tiny 0.3 oz. glass bottle with pump dispenser lasts me about 3-6 months, but YMMV depending entirely on how often and how much you use at a time. The serum has a gel like, slightly sticky consistency that should be applied last in your skin care routine. It takes a looooong time to dry down so be warned if this will bother you. IMHO, the results are well worth the slight loss of aesthetics. Paula’s BHA9 has gotten rid of blackheads that I had harboured for decades! Over time, It can also help reduce sebaceous hyperpasia, those nasty over-sized, deformed pores that seem to develop out of nowhere, and are impossible to hide with makeup.
I took off one lippy for the stiffness of the pump, which can be a little tricky to manipulate when you want just the tiniest drop of product. Other than that, this is HG for me and belongs in the arsenal of everyone with oily or combination skin prone to break outs. It’s also not tested on animals, so cruelty-free — thank you, Paula. And formulated for sensitive skin.

this product is the best for acne prone skin for people who live in very dry area like me. But only this product is not gonna help you get rid of acne, you will need something stronger for acne like drying lotion (kate somerville or mario badescu) on your acne area, this product will help prevent your skin from being tok dry from the acne lotion without giving you more acne

Background:
I have acne prone skin, with a lot of clogged pores (cheeks, chin, forehead), blackheads all over and super oily skin. I had great success with Paula’s other BHA products (below) and thought I’d amp up the BHA % for those extra-tough spots/areas.
Some years ago I was all about AHAs, but these days BHAs have helped me more with my issues with clogged pores. That being said… I’m starting to incorporate AHA into my routine again.
Routine:
Morning: I wash with La Roche Posay Oily Sensitive Skin, apply the BHA 2%, then Paula’s Resist Super-Light Daily Wrinkle Defense Spf 30.
Night: I wash with the same cleanser, apply Clindoxyl Gel, and then moisturize with jojoba oil. I alternate the Clindoxyl Gel with the 4% BHA product every couple/few nights or with Paula’s 10% AHA Weekly Treatment (now that it’s summer, I’m mindful not to use the high % acids at night, if I know the next day I’ll be out in the sun all day).
Other Paula’s Choice BHA products I’ve used…
– Skin Perfecting Liquid Exfoliant BHA 2%
– RESIST Weekly Retexturizing Foaming Treatment 4% BHA
– Clear Exfoliating Body Spray BHA 2%
Results:
Unfortunately, it hasn’t improved anything. I gave it 2 lippies because it didn’t break me out (yay!), but it just didn’t do anything..
Texture:
Product felt very silky. I was worried that because of this I would break out – but luckily did not!
Smell:
I personally don’t care how a product smells, as long as it works. That being said, it doesn’t have a harsh smell to it.
Packaging:
The packaging could use some improvement. The tube looks very nice, and it’s useful that you can see how much product is left through the side window (not sure how it’s called), but you can’t really control how much product comes out. It’s near impossible to use it as a spot treatment. Sometimes, you can manage to get a small amount out by barely pushing the pump, but you can’t do that a second time! So then you have to push the pump harder, and a whole glop comes out, and then you end up just spreading the extra product elsewhere. It’s a waste – especially when the tube is so small !!
Price:
Considering how much product you actually get – it’s quite an expensive buy.
All in all.. a one time purchase for me.

I received the BHA9 as a sample with recent PC order. I have been using the 2% BHA liquid for 4-5 months with no significant difference. I think it helps keep things clear, but I have had issues with blackheads on my nose and cheeks for years now. No product I have used whether it be BHA, retinol, tactuo, benzoyl peroxide, or glycolic acid will touch them. The only thing that helps is manual extraction, but then they are back in full force a week after! I didn’t want to continue that route due to it damaging my skin, so I thought i’d give this a try. I saw a small improvement after one night, and this super tiny sample has lasted me three weeks now and my blackheads are much smaller, which has caused my pores to decrease in size and be less dilated. My skin honestly looks better than it ever has, I am even doing the unthinkable and going out with no BB cream or foundation on! I usually always wear some even if I have no active blemishes simply to hide the blackheads that are so damn apparent. This stuff is not totally a miracle in a bottle, but for me it’s pretty damn close. My skin did sting and peel a bit the first week of using it, but once it adapted to the higher strength it has been fine since. I dab it on a zit that is coming up and it prevents it from further development as well. I hate the price, but I will purchase a full size because I just don’t think I can live without this!

Edit: this has been working better for me. It hasn’t dried me out as much. I am also using less and making sure my skin is more hydrated before applying this. I also think my skin now is less damaged than it was at the time of my original review, so perhaps better able to deal with the strength of this product. This go around, it is also eliminating blackheads that I thought I would have forever. Added two stars.

I have combination skin and am prone to hives and milia. This dried me out a bit too much and didn’t really help with bumps, spots, wrinkles. I also disliked the pump format which dispensed too much product and was a waste of money; a pea sized amount was definitely too much. (Agree with Lenchens review below). My skin does better with using sparing amounts of PC 2% BHA liquid and 8 % glycolic. I alternate usage of those items every two nights or as needed. I think the reason why I do better with 2% BHA liquid than this product, is that it’s easier for me to regulate the amounts (just a few drops). I like husveges review below as well as that of huntybooboo (I use her tip of lightly depressing the pump since I would like to use up what I have).

I quite like this product. It feels like it makes a different on stubborn spots. However, it is rather strong, so it can irritate the skin. Also the product is very expensive, which is why I don’t think that I would buy it again. Also I think that my bottle will last for quite some time, since I just use very little of it. The pump is not very practical, as other reviewers have already written. If you press down the pump you will get too much product, and since it is very expensive, it feels like a waste. Also if you are tempted to put the rest of the liquid on the rest of your face not to waste it, it will irritate the skin, as it is too strong, and not ment to be used on big surfaces.
