So, this may seem like a harsh review, but I honestly couldn’t give it higher. I don’t understand any of the rave about this whole line. I’ve tried so many products after such high reviews. This is my experience:
I live in Australia so I could only buy it online at the time so the price alone was fairly high and then adding the postage price, it was quite expensive. But I was willing to try it because of the reviews. I have 3a-ish hair.
When I received the package I was a little dissapointed with the size, especially because of its price.
I used it that night and really struggled to wash my hair normally, it was so thin! I had to pump only a maximum of two shots at a time and then repeat until I had enough to stop it running down my arm.
The smell was pretty good. Not my favourite but nice enough. Followed up with the conditioner, washed it all out, wrapped my hair and went to sleep.
Woke the next morning and remember thinking “oh, yeah I guess it defined the curls a bit.” figured it just took a couple of tries. Did my research on how other people used it and then tried again later that week and got the same sort of result. Figured I’d just use it up and continued to use it once more. Over those 3 times my hair went from pretty healthy and soft to hay like and drier than I have ever seen it in my life. Everyone, including the hairdresser was shocked at how dry it was, breaking off in her hands.
I already have a dry, sensitive scalp but again, this made it worse than ever, the itchiness insane and embarrassing flakes everywhere.
I stopped using it immediately and have worked to restore my hair and am still in the process of trying to fix my scalp. It’s been over 6 months now and my hair is back to normal, scalp still very dry and flaky.
I won’t be buying this EVER again, since it’s all gone now anyway because it was knocked into its side in the shower and because of its thin consistentency, just flowed right out of the bottle.

This is the first sulfate free shampoo that I’ve used, so I don’t have much to compare it to. I don’t know if it’s because it’s too rich for my hair, or if it’s too ineffective in cleaning my hair, but I always feel like my hair is still a bit dirty after using this shampoo. I’m leaning towards the latter, because I have severely dry hair and I’ve never come across a product that is too rich before. Sometimes I do two washes and it helps a little, but I don’t think you should have to resort to that. I’ve been alternating between this and one of Lush’s richer SLS shampoo bars (the Godiva one mainly) for this reason. It lathers better than I expected it would, but I do still miss a nice, rich lather sometimes. I definitely use more of this than I would any SLS shampoo.
The scent is very nice straight out of the bottle, but for some reason I think it smells like a cleaning agent when lathered into the hair. I have no idea why this is. The same thing doesn’t happen with the conditioner with the same scent. As for the bottle, it’s alright, but I would’ve preferred if it had a pump just like the conditioner bottle.
Overall, it’s an okay shampoo. I will use it up (I’ve gone through 2/3 of the bottle as I write this review), but I don’t think I’ll repurchase. I love the idea of giving my dry, curly hair a break from sulfates, but I don’t love the feeling of dirty hair. I’ll keep searching for a good cruelty free, sulfate free shampoo.

Recently switched to this after using the Shea Moisture Moisture Retention shampoo for 2 years and love it!
I have thick, wirey, 3B hair texture and am prone to dryness and frizz so I only shampoo my hair 2-3 times a week. I find this shampoo to be even more moisturizing than the Moisture Retention shampoo from this line and I definitely notice more curl definition and shine. Love this stuff, would definitely repurchase.

I love this shampoo. I have the most dry scalp and curly hair. I bought this when my hair was very dry and lifeless due to some bleach sessions. This is not a styling product, I dont expect from it to solve my dryness nor defining my waves. What I want from a shampoo is that to cleanse without drying my hair any further and to me this does its job.

Utter overpriced crap. Did absolutely no moisturising for my hair. All it did was make it smell nice. Suave cheap shampoo worked better than this.

This is my #1, HG hair product. I have 2B hair which is wavy and this shampoo/conditioner defines my waves and loose curls beautifully, I don’t even need to use styling products to control the frizz. I use this in adjunct with the curling leave-in treatment and the smoothie. I love the smell and it lingers for days. Also, this shampoo/conditioner makes my hair moisturized, with slip, supple, soft and bouncy. I can’t say enough good things about this product!!

My hair is short, color-treated, slightly dry, and wavy-curly. I wash my hair once a week.
I originally thought this was a moisturizing shampoo because of its reputation and it felt moisturizing when I used it.
However, by the second day my hair looked dry (but it had a lot of fullness) and the curl had gone so I used a moisturizing conditioner. On the third day my hair still looked dry and there was a little breakage. I gave my hair a light wash with Ouidad Curl Quencher Moisturizing Shampoo & conditioned with Ouidad Curl Quencher Conditioner. On the fourth day I conditioned again with Ouidad Curl Quencher Conditioner.
My hair finally felt in balance.
Shea Moisture advertises that it’s for curly hair and that it provides moisture and shine. It has eliminated sulfates, parabens, and other “bad” ingredients. However, it’s not at all suited for curly hair, or dry hair, both of which require moisture. Shea Moisture dried out my hair more than any clarifying shampoo I’ve ever used.

I love the smell of this shampoo but it makes my hair so dry, my ends feel like straw when I use it, it must be the coconut oil, protein overload for curly hair, makes my wavy hair really shiny but that’s it, towards mid-week I start to get really itchy scalp at the crown.

Although I would buy this product again, it’s not a product I would ever go out of my way for. I actually really like the fact that it did not strip my hair of oils whatsoever. It felt very nice by the time I was done and that was the first time I’ve ever felt what it was like to NOT have your hair stripped of its natural oils. The smell is also beautiful. The only reason I’m not head over heels over this product is because this particular line of the Shea moisture is supposed to specialize in curls and I really don’t feel this product did anything for my curls. I think it’s the least defined I’ve ever seen my curls, and the frizziest I’ve ever seen them…

The third shampoo I tried from this brand. So far, this is the most moisturizing one I have tried from the others(Jamaican Castor Oil Shampoo and Black African Soap Dandruf.
So far, the best moisturizing shampoo I have EVER tried. For my Asian/Caucasian hair that is easily oily at the scalp, straight, very thick and very long, I dont need a super moisturizing shampoo and this is juuuust right. I think any more moisture or oil would be too much and I dont think I will try a more moisturizing shampoo than this one. My hair does feel extremely soft and silky but not as airy, bouncy clean like the others. Does not make my scalp oily though; it is so gentle and soft in cleansing and there is no sulfates. I should only use this if I washed my hair already the same say or with a deeper cleaning shampoo the day before. I could NOT wash my hair with this shampoo when my hair has a pre-treatment(similar to what the reviewer below me stated) or very oily to start off with.
The texture, smell and easy lather altogether is tropically divine! The smell alone makes me happy to use this(smells like a pineapples). The ingredients look pretty natural and exotic.
If you are looking for a soft&gentle cleansing, VERY moisturizing shampoo: This is the best so far and while it is not the cheapest, it is not salon priced. SheaMoisture keeps impressing me with their haircare. Would buy again!
