Why, oh why is this product so flipping expensive?! I totally have to disagree here with some of the other people that say this does not actually repair your barrier when it is compromised. To me, when I have over exfoliated or gone in too hard with my retin a or vitamin C or any other actives that may be harsh on my skin, and all else burns, this not only is extremely soothing on my skin and does provide a soothing barrier, after using it for a few days in vast quantities at night and a thin layer am under makeup, it DOES heal me. How do I know? Cuz I’m an idiot who doesn’t slow down on the actives and this is kinda the only change I make. YMMV obvi. I have bought this so many times & the packaging is so great because it is keeping the product air safe and light safe. It is NOT only a glorified make up primer filled with silicone’s like Monistat chafing gel or Smashbox because there are soothing oats extracts and all this other malarkey in it. However it IS silicone based. NO water. It is anhydrous. Very interesting gem of a product for people that go commando on the actives must have. Cicapair, etc got nada on this. That, cerave, chemical spf etc burn when this doesn’t. It allows me to carry on my psycho regime and as long as I remove alcohol and go lighter w chemical spf I’m good. Again… everyone is different. My skin can take a beating to find the fountain of youth! I would never waste this though on a daily basis when my skin is doing fine. I only bust this out when it is needed. Therefore, I am not wasting a 1 ounce, $50 moisturizer!!

What can I say? I’ve always referred to this masterpiece as my little bottle of botox. Because that is exactly what it is. After putting it on, you basically get the same silicone effect, and it’s wonderful. It leaves your skin glowing and makes for an excellent primer. It has a beautiful texture that is unique to the Dermalogica range. Unfortunately, I’ve had to stop using it as it couldn’t really combat my oily skin when combined with my foundations. I do miss it dearly, and perhaps, in time, when age decreases my oil production (fingers crossed), I’ll revert back to it instead of Dermalogica’s Oil Control Lotion (which is outstanding). However, you may also want to try Dermalogica’s Clearing Mattifier if you find that Barrier Repair is a little too much.
This stuff, like Botox, is pricey. Also, it comes in quite a small amount, and only Dermalogica professionals can purchase it in a large bottle, or so I’ve been told. It would be great if it came in a larger bottle.

I have been using barrier repair for at least 7 years. It’s the only moisturizer I have ever used that doesn’t cause my skin to breakout, while also providing enough moisture to do the job. Although to me the price is a bit steep, it’s worth it and I will contour to use it for years to come.

Make no mistake, there’s nothing in here that repairs, but there is barrier protection. The primary ingredients are the same things you find in primers (& UD’s all-nighter foundation), which are all silicone oil derivatives. The texture, because of this, is akin to a primer.
It contains anti-oxidants in tube packaging that protects their integrity, but the ginger may irritate some skin. The silicone oil derivatives then provide a semi-air tight barrier to protect skin from oxygen and seal other products in, which enhances their performance.
It’s a good alternative to vaseline/petroleum-based products like Aquaphor. Just an FYI: petroleum is a great product & skin saver and is made from mineral oil, whose molecules are too big to penetrate or block pores. If you break out using it, that means it’s holding pore-penetrating/blackhead causing ingredients in–isopropyl myristate for example–and you may need to add a BHA to your routine. BHAs clear out pores & prevent blackheads/whiteheads/milia/keratosis and vaseline will block air/pollution for it to work more effectively.
Dermalogica is not a brand I would ever recommend since its face washes are essentially overpriced detergents and the lotions miss the mark and it’s lotions are made of cheap ingredients, especially in comparison to affordable options. Using the full line will do nothing for fine lines/discoloration and only shrink your wallet rather than your pores & problems. This is one of the few good products in the line, but hardly worth the money.

Amazing product. I got this is a sample and I am going to buy it to use with my other moisturiser.. Waterless, so hydrating, feels like velvet on my skin. Gets rid of the few dry patches I have around my mouth and cheeks. Takes away the redness I get on my cheeks too. Almost feels like a primer. Really light weight.

I haven’t used this very long but I think it’s an okay product. After I put it on I can see my redness reduced dramatically but other than that I don’t think it does anything. In my opinion it has a silky primer like consistency to it and I like how it feels. The downside is price, it’s too high for a tiny tube so I think I’ll return it to Ulta because I’m feeling a bit guilty for paying so much. There’s no ingredient in it that should make it that expensive so I just think it’s a ripoff…

I got this as part of the calming kit. I had the most hope for this product. I have dry sensitive skin – I cannot remember a time that I have not had to put on moisturizer at least twice a day.
Another reviewer is right – this is really a primer not a moisturizer. As a primer it is ok and I will use it up, but I prefer Smashbox light primer.
It does work to help heal dry skin and pimples – which I would have never tried if I had not found Makeup Alley.
Save your money – there are better Dermalogica products out there to save your skin.

This is the under-performer of the Ultra Calming line. Its of a light silicone consistency, feels greasy yet lacking moisture. It just sits atop of the epidermis supposedly sealing in whatever products you would have layered beneath it –> blocking the pores. Within an hour of application, I always see formation of bumps under my skin, that if left unchecked, would lead to zits. Its so terrible, I cannot even pass the unused product on to anyone of my friends. Easily one of the worst products I’ve ever used.

I used Dermalogica in Master Esthetics school, and it has some really great products. IMO Dermalogica is a little over priced, but this is one of my favorite products from them. It has many uses. It’s not used very often only as a moisturizer, because it has a silicone base. It does feel really smooth and velvety. We mostly used it right after waxing to prevent ingrown hairs, and to put over zits to get quicker healing. I use it for waxing, zits, cuts, and after I do a chemical peel on myself or someone else, because it’s really good to use after intense exfoliation. You don’t need very much so this will last you a really long time. You will love this product.

This stuff is amazing! I’ve been using a Retin-A cream at night for the past month which has been doing wonders for my skin, but at the same time has made my skin very dry, peely and extremely sensitive. My normal moisturizers and foundations now feel painful (like they burn) when applied to my skin. I was pretty desperate to find a daytime moisturizer that didn’t burn and that would form a barrier between my skin and foundation, so the the foundation wouldn’t burn. I did a makeupalley search and walked into ulta looking for the Dermalogica Barrier Repair.
I used this on my painfully sensitive face last night for the first time. I applied it over my retin-a and night moisturizer. It did not burn or hurt, in fact it felt very soothing and nice. I used more than the pea size recommended because my skin just drank it up – one pea size was totally absorbed by just one cheek. So i probably did a pea size on each cheek, forehead and then my nose/mouth (extra around corners of nose and sides of mouth where my skin is starting to crack from dryness). It felt so soft and velvety on my skin – very comforting.
Woke up this morning, went into the bathroom to get ready, and when I looked in the mirror I couldn’t believe my eyes …. my face looked completely back to normal! My skin looked hydrated (not tight and dry), normal peachy skincolor (not red!), calm and soft (not inflamed and sensitive), and most shocking of all… the small cracks on the sides of my mouth and nose that were so dry they were actually starting to bleed, were almost completely healed! Like 99% healed! I actually had to lean into the mirror and inspect closely just to see a tiny line where my skin had filled in and healed over the cracks. I touched my skin and it felt completely restored to normal health, as if I was not using retin-a at all. I cannot tell you how shocked I am. This stuff is liquid gold. I don’t care how much a tiny tube costs – with this kind of performance, I will continue to buy it.
I will use it today before my foundation, and see if it prevents the stinging and burning of the makeup on my skin. And I’ll update this review in a few days with more detail on it’s continued performance.
