I’m on my 2nd tube of this lovely sheer strawberry red. Julie Hewett makes my favorite lipstick formulation as her lipsticks are moisturizering without feeling heavy or greasy. It must be due to the camilia oil. I am neutral fair skinned with moderately pigmented lips. This shade brightens up my complexion but due to its sheer texture doesn’t scream I’m wearing red lipstick. This is red for those who are red shy. Appears to be a touch more pink that Oona Noir, which I plan to try next. Priced at $30, it’s in line with Marc Jacobs, Nars, Charlotte Tilbury. However, I generally purchase when a code is offered and her site offers 30-40% off quite frequently.

I’m late to the Julie Hewett lipstick party but I’m glad I arrived at last. I give Gem Noir 4.5 lipsticks and if the staying power were a bit longer, I’d give it a full five lipsticks.
It’s a beautiful blue toned red that doesn’t turn pink on my pigmented lips and doesn’t make me look overly made up. Some lipstick formulas have a heavy texture which looks thick on the lips but this one can be layered for intensity.
I need to reapply during the day but the colour is so beautiful I don’t mind doing so. The gold bullet shaped packaging is cute too.
I have my eyes on Oona Noir as my next JH lipstick.

This lipstick is awesome. Hollywood makeup artist Julie Hewett created the Noir line of lipsticks while working on “Pearl Harbor” and recognized the need for 1940s matte technicolor lipsticks in today’s market. I love anything vintage, so I was excited to find this brand. The packaging is totally vintage-styled – a gold metallic bullet-style tube. The lipstick itself is creamy and very pigmented. Gem Noir is a sheer, satiny berry red that’s very buildable. It is a great “everyday red” or for ladies who are afraid to wear red lipstick. Straight from the tube, it looks natural and applies nicely. Much like all the other JH lipsticks, it is pigment-based and can feel a bit drying after a few hours, so I’d suggest a balm underneath. It lasts several hours and can be easily retouched without having to totally remove and start over. I also think this would probably work well on almost all complexions. I’m a big fan of the Noir lipsticks and will definitely repurchase.

I love this red lippie! It’s a sheer go-to-red with buildable coverage. Lightweight on the lips, it doesn’t flake or bleed.
I have fair skin, dark brown hair and brown eyes and this colour just lights my face up. With the matching lip liner (sold separately) it’s worth the buy to get that Snow White looking pout.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone that has always wanted to try red lips but wasn’t too sure about it.

Gem Noir is a pretty, sheer red from Julie Hewett’s famous “Noir” line. On my neutral skin it turns a coral red color. Personally, this is my least favorite out of the 3 Julie Hewett’s I own (Sin Noir and Film Noir are the other two, see reviews), but it’s still a very nice summer red for me. I can never have enough reds, and this adds something new and unique to my collection. Pigmentation is good even with the sheer finish. There is a slight sheen…definitely not matte, not gloss, just pure satin. The texture is extremely lightweight yet creamy. I did have some bleeding with this when I used it without a liner or primer, but use of one or the other solved the problem…and I suppose bleeding is to be expected from such a sheer formulation. Wear time was about 3 hours for me (without eating), which is above-average for a sheer formula for me. However, anything remotely oily will literally blow this lipstick right off your lips. The packaging is nice, as well…a gold bullet-style case that looks very heavy but is made of plastic, so it’s very lightweight.
Overall, a very nice sheer summer red with a good formula and beautiful packaging.

Gem Noir is a very sheery pretty berry-red on me. It didn’t turn pink or orange on me – just a red berry, but sheer. Hard to explain.
I’m neutral, brown eyes and hair. It’s a lot lighter than Film Noir (which is best described by the website as a blackberry red) which makes it better for day to day use IMO.
I have trouble with these lipsticks losing color in the middle of my mouth/lips, but I don’t do much prep prior to applocation, and I chew a lot of gum. But I like the forumla – not too dry, not too slippery.
My favorite JH lippie is Oona Noir – i would order that again before I ordered this again (so I said I wouldn’t repurchase) but I do like this color. It makes me think of the DrPepper lip balm by Lip Smackers in a way, but much more sophisticated and pretty.

This has the typical smooth, lush pigmentation and silky teture of her other Sheer Noir lipsticks. Gem Noir is the brightest and warmest of the 3 (Oona and Film Noir). Very pretty corally, rosy-peachy red. I’m still trying to decide if it’s the right color for me, so said I wouldn’t re-purchase. But if you’re looking for a sheer red, these are gorgeous and highly recommended. (For reference, I’m a pale, cool-toned LLL with blue eyes.)

This is a lovely, glossy strawberry red that’s like a less-coral version of Nars’ Niagra. It’s also supposedly like Mac’s Strawberry Blonde, which I’ve never seen. I thought this’d be a bright, Gwen Stefani red, but it’s a slightly sheer, pinky red that fades beautifully. It’s one of the few reds that works for summer. Comes in an old school Hollywood gold bullet casing. Pretty pricey($23, I think), but just lovely all the same.

These lipsticks have beautiful color, which goes on sheer. Gem Noir is a stunning red. Texture is silky and smooth, and this formula is odorless. Staying power is not as long as with an opaque lipstick but I don’t mind reapplying. The only reason I would not repurchase this is this shade did not work for me. I have super-warm skin, for reference I use the Champagne shade in Px Flawless Skin. This pretty red unfortunately went orange on me. But for someone with a neutral skin tone, this lipstick would be nothing short of stunning. Packagingwise, the gold tube somewhat resembles a bullet, with a scroll detail on the front side. My gripe with this lipstick is that the actual lipstick bullet is so skinny that it is very easily breakable should you happen to turn this up just a bit too far. But that is my only complaint. Originally available in 4 shades, more shades have been added. If you are interested, they are available at softsurroundings.com, which is where I got this. HTH!
