I have been a fan of Julie Hewett LA’s Noir Lipstick Collection since I met her during the Boston filming of “The Women”. Every red shade is unique and gorgeous. I have used Coco Noir, a deep red, here to create a dramatic effect. It has earned a permanent place in my professional makeup artist Boston kit.

As a gift to myself for making it through graduate school in one piece, I had my graduation makeup done at a Blushington in Beverly Hills. When the MUA put this lipstick on my face, I immediately fell in love. So much so that I bought a tube on the spot. First of all, the packaging is so pretty and retro, if a little cheap – the tube’s cover cracked soon after I bought it. The color is a beautiful deep and rich red that compliments my skintone in such a lovely way. It’s matte, which I love, but super moisturizing and comfortable. The best part is that it lasts all day long with minimal need for touch-ups. This is my holy grail lip color and formula.

I am not in sync with the season. In December I wore pinks and nudes and in January I decided to ring in the new year with reds. Coco Noir is an amazing red. For my NC 37/40 complexion, it really brightens up my face and makes a bold statement. I wore this lip color to work and it lasted my 7hr shift- no bleeding, no smearing (even without lip liner). I love Julie Hewett reds. The packaging is classic and sleek…it makes me feel elegant.

This lipstick is awesome. Hollywood makeup artist Julie Hewett created the Noir line of lipsticks while working on “Pearl Harbor” and recognized the need for 1940s matte technicolor lipsticks in today’s market. I love anything vintage, so I was excited to find this brand. The packaging is totally vintage-styled – a gold metallic bullet-style tube. The lipstick itself is creamy and very pigmented. This color is very close to the Fekkai “Brick” that Kate Beckinsale wore in Pearl Harbor. It also reminds me of Cate Blanchett’s makeup in The Aviator. It is a very Lauren Bacall color – a matte, creamy brown brick red. This is a bit dark and can look vampy, but is a lovely color. It can feel a bit drying after a few hours, so I’d suggest a balm underneath. It lasts several hours and can be easily retouched without having to totally remove and start over. I’m a big fan of the Noir lipsticks and will definitely repurchase.

I’m sort of surprised by the range of comments on this particular shade. I’m NC40 as a reference with extremely pale pink lips and this shows up true to shade, meaning red/orange/brown. This is heavy duty, full coverage, no nonsense browned red and it is gorgeous. When I first got it, the packaging reminds me of my mom’s lipsticks – chic gold case with a little flourish design at the swivel. The website describes this as…
“Coco Noir is a versatile brick-red that works on most skin tones. The Noir collection features our best long-lasting lipsticks. Double-pigmented formula lasts for hours but will not dry your lips out – made with healing camellia oil and essence of rose bud”. I would agree with all of these claims, however I am saving this for special evenings where I really want a super glam red lip. IMO this is just too much for the office.

Being a red lipstick lover, and having read rave reviews of JH, I thought it was time to bite the bullet. Indeed the lipstick is in a nice bullet-shaped tube! On my unpigmented lips, this shows up as a very deep pink-based red, not quite the brick red color I thought. I have a beige-olive complexion, and it does brighten the overall face. I have to choose what I’m wearing carefully though, to make sure it does not clash. The pigmentation is the strongest of any lipstick I have ever used, and it does not bleed. It lasts all day and the color is very true, not fading and not turning.

I’ve been looking for a brick/brown red and was really excited by everything I’ve read about Coco Noir. I ordered the lipstick with matching liner. Yikes, what a disappointment! The color is a fushia, orangey color on my lips. I am fair with yellow undertones. Unfortunately, it’s going in the garbage. The Film Noir is more the color I’m looking for; it is a very pretty brick red/wine shade with brown undertones.

The quality and pigmentation of these lipsticks are really fantastic. They’re like MAC Mattes, only not as drying. I’m pale, NW15/20, and this on me is quite a dark red, bordering on goth. It’s not especially warm, but I don’t find it cool either. I have no idea why they sell it as a red for people who think they can’t wear red — it’s not that bright, for sure, but it’s dark, and it’s bold, and on me it’s even a little bit vampy.

The color is rich deep beautiful red and the quality is excellent. But I look really awful in this lipstick rather than the sophisticated way I hoped for. I wanted it to work and tried many approches – matching liner, brown liner, bronzer, less eye makeup, less blush….
I have LLL/MMM yellow toned skin and a full face. So this dramatic lip just draws all attention to bottom half of face which isn’t a good idea unless you have the face for it.
I think, though, that if you have a slender, angular face or are quite young that Coco Noir would look sophisticated and classy.

Beautiful red lipstick, use a lip brush to get a perfect finish. This lipstick stays put, non drying and is one of the best out there. Julie offer a nice selection of red lipsticks, check her out.
