Very good eyeshadow for low price.

There are a lot of strong opinions on Makeup Geek eyeshadows in either direction, but I can understand why. In my personal experience, I have had only positive results using the 8 MUG shadows I purchased. I have Barcelona Beach, Creme Brulee, Dark Road, Dirty Martini, High Tea, Magic Act, Peach Smoothie, and Shimma Shimma. Although I have had only positive experiences using these shadows, I can understand some of the complaints. One would be the lack of formula consistency across the brand. I noticed even among my good shadows that some shades, such as Dirty Martini, have a lot of kick up and fallout if you are not careful while blending, whereas the other mattes do not seem to have that issue. The greener shades like Dirty Martini and High Tea I also found took a lot of work to blend, but that is not unusual for green shadows. I also can understand criticism of shimmery/foiled shades like Magic Act and Shimma Shimma not being as immediately impactful as shimmer shades from other brands. Nonetheless I still think they are solid eyeshadows, although the foiled ones could be at the same price as the other shadows ($6 instead of $10). Despite these issues I found that all of the shadows, especially the mattes, were well pigmented, easy to blend, and reasonably priced. I will definitely be repurchasing from Makeup Geek in the future!

I’ve read a ton of reviews on these & there seems to be very opposing opinions out there, so I figured I’d throw mine in.:o) I have been a make-up artist for almost half my life now, and many of those years were spent with MAC. I can honestly say that if you did not like these shadows, it’s got to be either A: You unfortunately didn’t try the right shades/formulation, or B: You didn’t use an eyeshadow primer. I will admit that a few of their shimmery shades don’t perform the BEST…but a couple of them that I’ve tried are great (Lucky Penny is very similar to MAC’s Sable…not QUITE the same, but almost.) However, my five star rating is based on their MATTE SHADOWS. They are INCREDIBLE. Especially for the price.
I just use Wet & Wild’s Photofocus Eyeshadow Primer (which rivals much more expensive brands & is among the best I’ve ever used!) and then I use several of the MUG Matte Eyeshadows. I’ll list out my two favorite looks that I get tons of compliments on. I do my makeup every morning at about 7:00am, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that these shadows looks JUST AS FRESH and vibrant by 10’ish PM when I wash them off. They blend beautifully & stay very true to color. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE MATTE SHADOWS. Start with these!! (I got the 9 Well Palette and was very impressed by how snugly it holds the shadows in there & looks very high quality.)
Look #1:
Vanilla Bean- under brow
Side Kick- crease
Cocoa Bear- deep crease
Peach Smoothie- lid
Shimma Shimma- inner highlight
*If I want this look to be a bit more dramatic for a special occasion, I’ll throw some Bitten in the outer corner/crease.
Look #2:
Vanilla Bean- under brow
Vintage- crease
Aphrodite- deep crease
Sorbet- lid
Shimma Shimma- inner highlight
So there you have it, NINE FABULOUS shadows to get you started and fill up a great looking palette. If you put these on over a good primer, using the proper brushes, there is no way you won’t like them. I’m 35 with slightly hooded lids and I am an NW20-NW25 with a C4 powder, to give you an idea of my skin tone.
(Corrupt is a really nice deep black too if you’re into using shadow as liner!)
Hope this helps!

Because I’m such a control freak about everything in my life, I decided to order individual eyeshadows from both MAC and Makeup Geek. I’ve read so many reviews that stated MUG was far surperior to MAC. Well. I digress! Both MAC and MUG are pretty-much on par with MAC in the lead by a hair for me. But–this is about MUG. I ordered Hipster, Shimma Shimma, Beaches and Cream And Barcelona Beach. All shadows pretty-much neutrals. Hipster was beautiful online and when I received it, it was beautiful as well, a muddy taupe-swampy clay color, it isn’t as pigmented as I thought it would be. Nonetheless–it is buildable but not the color I had in mind. Barcelona Beach makes a good overall wash it’s not that pigmented. Beaches and Cream gives a nice brightening effect and Shimma Shimma is great! Overall the shadows are fine. I LIKE them. I do not LOVE them. And for the price, they are fine. The packaging is fine. It’s all good.

I’m surprised to see such polar reviews on these eye shadows. I probably have about 15 shades (predominately mattes with a few shimmers/foiled ones) and I really enjoy this formula. I find these so easy to work with. I don’t find that they blend away, actually to the contrary, I find that the pigment stays really vibrant on my eye lids throughout the day (NC20 – 25 skin tone), one of the best of any eye shadow formula I’ve tried (incl. ABH, tarte, juvia’s place, KVD, UD, MAC, etc.). I have oily and hooded lids so eye shadow primer is always a must for me so I’m not sure if that makes a key difference with this particular formula moreso than others I use. Most people compare these to MAC and I actually like these better as they’re softer, easier to blend IMO, and I’ve had very little fall out. They’re also cruelty free and made in USA.
I don’t have an opinion either way on their YouTube founder, but I just know that I like this formula and I’ll continue to repurchase. I will say that I agree that shipping is a bit annoying but I always purchase mine during one of their sales throughout the year (~20 – 25% off) and given the per unit price is so affordable, not sure how much I can really complain overall about the cost. Would definitely recommend you check these out if you have specific colours you want but don’t want to purchase an entire new palette.
dopeyPie5
Great quality, good price. Definitely rivals MAC, and all of the other high-end shadows. All shadows come in the professional- pot styles, meaning u would need to have a zpallet or MAC eyeshadow pallet to house them. It comes out much more affordable to build your own pallet, versus buying every pallet that catches your eye. I like to see which new pallets come out, look for the colors that I like and don’t have. Makeup Geek had a black Friday special 25%off. I got 3 shadows, used the online coupon, and the shipping was $1.99. I highly recommend MG shadows, quality and affordability, AND… they are made in the USA. 🙂
truthfulDinosaur7
I don’t get all the hype around Makeup Geek eyeshadows. When swatched I don’t find them very pigmented. And when placed on the eyes they are nothing special. I find Lorac shadows to be more pigmented and easy to blend. I guess I was duped into thinking these were good quality and I should have checked here first – lesson learned. These shadows are not very “wowing” in my opinion and expected more from them.
amazedJerky0
I’ve been using these shadows for a few years. Love the price and the quality! Shipping costs are very low too. My orders usually include a sample eyeshadow or blush, and I’ve found some new colors. Also love their sksincare line. Highly recommend.
culturedRelish6
I LOVE these eyeshadows. They are very high quality! I have been using them for a couple years now and they are wonderful. I love how they are affordable, indie, cruelty free and don’t charge a fortune for shipping to Canada. I have tried and loved so many colors. I have very fair skin, green eyes and dirty blonde hair and my favorite shadows are: Cloudberry, Daiquari, Lunar, Frosty, Legend, Dig It, Purr, and Adorn. The brighter colors are also fun: 5th Ave, Poly, Breathe. They are highly pigmented, last a long time, easy to work with, and offer a wide range of colors with various finishes. They often throw in sample freebies too.

I have to say I am very impressed with Silk Natural eyeshadows. For one is the price, these are really cheap! And the fact that you get free ones with every $30 purchase is pretty awesome too. The second is the color selection, WOW. SO many colors to choose from. If anything, there are almost too many, I don’t know which ones to pick! And lastly, the quality. I am impressed with the quality. One of the non-“green” products I have trouble giving up is Clinique eyeshadows. They are lovely, easy to apply and last all day. However, these may end up replacing my Clinique stash! While it is a pain that they are loose (I do really like pressed for simplicity), they do last all day with a primer (I use Tarte’s eye primer) and apply easy. Lastly, I love that they are made with natural ingredients!
The colors I have are:
Soiree: website says is “light golden copper shimmer” but on my NC15-20 skin, this looked more like a light brown taupe. Like other taupes, this almost had a green tinge which doesn’t look the best on my skin, but is a very pretty color I think other girls may like.
Fete: website says is “coppery shimmer”. On my wrist this looks coppery but once I put on my eyes it looks more cool toned brown than a warm/coppery brown. This did not have a greenish tinge like the Soiree, its a truly lovely color.
Naughty: website says is “dirty pink shimmer” but I see this as a light purple with a brownish-neutral type tone (rather then being a bright purple). This is like Fete in that it is a lovely color that looks great on my skintone.
Chills: website says “pale shimmery pink” and that is accurate. It is a cool-toned highlighter that I think goes nicely with Naughty.
Homecoming queen: website says”etherial gold highlight” and that is also accurate. It is a warm-toned highlighter that I think goes well Fete.
Overall, these are really great and I am going to be buying more to add to my collection!!

Great eyeshadows! Blend wonderfully, the colors are beautiful, and they have staying power! Love these!
grumpyRaisins6
EDIT: Falling out of love with minerals, esp eye shadows. These, I realize, have very little staying power, even on top of cream eyeshadows or UDPP. Plus, the darker shades leave a black base behind and when you blend, only the top shimmer move around. The colors are mostly just.. well.. flat.
Original review:
I’m torn. I’d give it a 3.5 if I could.
Pros: huuuuge range of colors, helpful descriptions & swatches, inexpensive, lots of product, doesn’t feel chalky, can get different “effects”/finishes using different techniques (with/without primer, foiling, cream eyeshadow base, shadestick base, etc)
Cons: I feel like they crease and disappear a lot easier than my other eyeshadows. Perhaps this is the con for mineral eyeshadows? I feel like lumiere’s is slightly better though. Prefer silk naturals to everyday minerals (EDM). Colors, I feel, are hit-or-miss.
Overall, I would repurchase if I fell in love with a color but now I’m a little more wary. I have a huuuge pile of their eyeshadows and find that there are only maybe one or two that I actually reach for. As with all minerals, it’s a mess to travel with. Maybe I’m just fallin’ out of love with minerals, but I do love their foundation. I digress…
grumpyEggs5
I am really pleased with most of the SN eyeshadows I have purchased. I prefer the shimmer colors and these definitely have it! They blend very well and stay put as long as you use a primer. My favorite shades are from the smokey plum quad.
puzzledMare9
I like these.
Pros:
1)The colors are pretty close to what you see online (definitely check the pictures that show some one’s arm or hand with these swiped on).
2)they are less likely to contain funny stuff in them because they have so few ingredients
3) they are pretty cheap to buy, 3.75 each + shipping (2.75?) and order over 30 get a free eyesahdow.
Cons:
1) They seem to need a primer, so far I have used UDPP and they work really well together. Strong colors, long lasting, tiny, if any creasing.

I have this is 74 walking in the sand. its a nude shade with spects of gold glitter. This can be used as a base, on its own I find it quite plain. Not sure why perhapes I prefer more pigmentation for this.
This shade is suitable if you want a subtle make up look.
empathicCockatoo1
Ugh I got Hawaiian beach with TONS of glitter ini it. It falls off almost instantly, all over my face especially on my cheeks. Very noticible glitters so it’s a disaster… I tried using eyeshadow primers (urban decays and panda whitening eye cream) but none of them holds up the horrible glitters. Tried using sponge, brush, fingers, nope didn’t work. I love the color so it’s very sad!

It’s hard to write a review for an entire line of eyeshadows from ANY company – MAC, Makeup Forever, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Chanel, Tom Ford and Burberry – all of them will have some absolute winners and a few stinkers in the group. The same is true of Sephora’s “house brand” of eyeshadows. They have a huge range of colours and finishes. But the majority of them – and all the ones I have tried, and I’ve tried a LOT – have been fabulous. Add to that the fact that you get a lot of product for a small price tag and, really, this is all “win/win”. When they revamped the line more than 5 years ago now, they would toss in a nice empty palette with the purchase of 2 shadows (they no longer have those palettes or that “deal” but it was great while it lasted). Another fabulous feature is that while the individual shadows come in sturdy, attractive containers, they are also very, very easy to depot and have been designed this way (none of the ridiculous measures you need to depot a MAC shadow are involved) and they stick in Z palettes without the need for a stick on magnet (I think MAC is one of the few eyeshadows that needs these and, of course, their pro pans come WITH magnets glued on and that keeps MAC shadows from sticking into Z palettes!). Buxom and ABH single shadows transfer easily to palettes but they don’t come in containers that allow you to use them “as is”. The Sephora shadows give the best of both worlds! Honestly, they are so worth trying out because many of them are truly great quality. Sadly, they discontinue a lot of them (some of my favourites are already gone or being phased out, though the pans are so large, I won’t run out for a decade!) so you really owe it to yourself to get into a store and try out the ones you think you might like.
January 2018: Sad news with an up side, I guess – it looks as though Sephora is getting rid of ALL their eyeshadows. I am guessing they are coming out with an entirely new collection, which should be exciting if the quality and variety are on par with the existing collection (which is rapidly shrinking in size/availability). The up side of this is that these are now marked down to $6 (CDN) so I went in today to check the remaining stock and picked up Roasted Chestnuts, a matte neutral brown shadow for which I’ve several dupes but it’s a colour I’ve always liked and the performance of it, when I first tested it out, is excellent. So for the sale price, I decided to grab it while I could. There are many lovely shades still available though this varies from store to store and online (some shades sold out online were available in store). You really can’t go too wrong with these, especially at this discounted price.
peacefulWhiting3
This is the perfect party-shadow for my green eyes! I have very small eyelids and this shadow make my eyes so big and beautiful. I do not like the glitter fallout, but other than that, it’s perfect! Makes my eyes pop and I feel sexy when I wear this!
mildKitten9
Simply lovely! I own No. 74 Walking In The Sand (single) & the Beautiful Crush Blockbuster Palette (contains 72 I think? e/s) as far as Sephora e/s & they are awesome!! The B/C palette has the e/s shaped in hearts arranged into “quads” & No. 74 is beautiful w Chlorophyll Sephora Nano eyeliner (kind of mimics the Sephora bday gift of a couple of yrs ago…I did not buy from Sephora then!). I bought this e/s in fact to wear w green e/l & what better than a $3 Nano e/l? The e/s are competitively priced when in a palette or ESP on sale but a good option as singles or sets (I don’t own any of the quads…yet) because ur getting not only better-than-DS quality, I cannot even think of a single DS line that are as good but I don’t mind paying for quality. I do wear mostly HE shadows so I’m used to UD, MAC, EL, & Clinique…investing in high quality e/s prevents creasing & prolongs wear ESP when paired w a good primer (eg UDPP). Investing in a few quality items rather than a zil cheap crap will serve u much better…the best u can reasonably afford to budget! Some of the sephora quads on sale price rival DS $, if u shop smart & watch 4 sales u can afford to collect intelligently.
cheerfulLizard1
This reminds me why it is worth paying more sometimes. I buy a lot of makeup and was hoping to save by trying out some Sephora singles. The shade selection was impressive, but that’s probably the best thing I can say about them. The colour quality does not translate when applied to the skin, and I find them really hard to blend, even having tried different brushes.
Learned my lesson; won’t repurchase.
peskyClam5
I have their Lavender Field eyeshadow which is a gorgeous purple with subtle glitter. I love this, it is very pigmented. If you use some sort of base, it doesn’t crease too much and lasts all day. The case it comes in is difficult to open, but other than that I have no complaints.
thrilledCaribou3
I love urban decay shadows. My favorites are the Naked 3 palette, the Ultimate Basics palette, and the single pot of Midnight Cowboy.
The shadows apply with nice, rich colors, blend very well, and have great staying power. They also come in sturdy packaging.
The downsides are their fall out during application, and some of the textures. The palettes I own all have smoothe texture, by Midnight Cowboy is another story. Midnight Cowboy is a gorgeous shimmery champagne color, but the fall out is very chunky. I have to be careful about not getting it in my eye or contacts. The color is amazing though!
I’d definitely recommend these shadows. They’re highly pigmented and long wearing, so you get a good value. You can use the Basics palette for shadow, liner, and medium brown brows as well.
holisticPiglet0
I have one of these shadows in the shade vanilla. I use it in my inner corner and it pops! At the end of the night this shadow can still be going strong while the rest of my shadow starts to fade away. It is a bit pricey but if you feel like treating yourself these shadows are a nice way to do it. I absolutely love the packaging and when I drop it ( I’m super clumsy ) it doesn’t break. It has lasted my over a year now and I would recommend to pretty much everyone!!
offendedBasmati3
The only eyeshadow I like to use now. They are the best. The singles packaging is amazing so spills and very sturdy. The colors I have used are all gorgeous and the sparkles ones are sophisticated not tacky. The best eyeshadowa period!
needfulSwift2
These are great eyeshadows & worth a reasonable investment by anyone. Singles are $20 or $21 each, as are the eyeliners & mascara. Colors are buildable, so don’t expect a big color payout with one swish through the shadow. Too big a swipe will cause the dust to fall under eyes & upper cheeks. This is really just a learning curve, since a LOT of women have a palette in their cases since layering brings out depth, remaining blendable. Great lasting power, particularly when using the SHIMMER eyeshadow primer (any) as opposed to the regular–the shimmer variety has a workday’s worth of virtually unbudgeable color.
The best investment in eyeshadow right now is a Naked or Naked 2 matte palette, which run $29. I have Naked 2 matte b/c the colors of Naked matte are primarily light instead of midtone, and I like a little natural drama. The darker colors hold up fine as eyeliner and make it the only eyeshadow you need for a trip.
Other perks are colors & finishes. Several colors feature iridescent shifts, which can bring out your eyes without being too much. It took me a while to forgo eyeliner for a long time while using these colors, but when I did, I loved how the colors were interesting & understated with just brown mascara. Then there’s the opposite end of the UD spectrum, where twinkling glitters don’t fall out of place easily, iridescents shift blue to gold or green, & shimmers that don’t look like you’re trying too hard. I was titillated when I found out some of colors in the Moonstone series doesn’t look crepy or too juvenile on 40+, hooded eyes.
Remember, layers! Use mattes to tone down too much shimmer/shine. Don’t stir up a lot of color with your brush without a plan for fall out as this makes palettes dirty fast & won’t give you any more color than you can truly blend in. Naked Matte 1 & 2 are steals at $29.00 and can be used everyday and as an on-the-go compact. Singles are expensive, and there is an empty, 4-shadow palette to customize your colors, but there’s no incentive since the palette is another $10. It should be free with the purchase of four at a minimum, like Buxom offers with 6 of your choice for $40, and those are as true & buildable. The palettes are the best deal but choose wisely since these all contain no more than 1/2 a palette’s worth of everyday, neutral colors & always too few mattes.
hushedBobolink1
I love the Urban Decay eyeshadow singles. I’ve been buying them throughout the years. They really do last a long time. The colors are pigmented and beautiful. They have a good shade range. The shimmer shadows do have a tiny bit of fallout for me. I’ve been having less fallout since I’ve been using an eyeshadow primer. So it could be user error with the fallout. Overall I will continue to buy the eyeshadow singles.
peacefulBittern5
I have reviewed the Naked palettes separately, so I’ll just review some singles here. I own “Sin”, which is a very pale shimmery light pinky shade that I like to use on my lid or as a highlight. I also own “Mushroom”, which is a shimmery dark taupe with primarily gray tones that I like to use mostly in the crease. The formula is very smooth, buttery, soft, and the pigment is awesome. The one thing I dislike is how soft it is. Well, it’s a love/hate thing. I love how easy the softness it makes it to blend, but the problem is that is also causes lots of crumbling. This leads to product waste and some fallout. But these are just minuscule problems in what is a lovely shadow. The shade selection is awesome, the formula is good, and it’s readily available. I definitely recommend.
sadUnicorn8
I just majorly splurged today at Sephora and bought 5 Urban Decay eyeshadows. I found out last night after doing some reading that they’re a cruelty-free brand, so I wanted to see what they had. After testing out a few colors in the store I ended up walking away with 5… yeah.
I bought Snakebite (warm dark choclatey brown), Desperation (dark blue-gray), Chase (warm sand), YDK (between a cool bronze and rose gold), and ABC Gum (matte peach).
The color payoff for all is unbelievable. The formulas are smoother than Mac’s shadows by a long shot. Most of the colors have a lot of shimmer, but somehow they don’t look cheap and “silvery” like most shimmers/frosts do. It’s just a sparklier version of the color, if that makes sense. They also lasted on me throughout the day without a primer, but I did notice that the darker colors smudged every so slightly, but I think this is because I used a lot at once instead of layering it on like you’re supposed to. It’s really finely milled powder so it’s easy to overdo it if you don’t have a light hand.
These shadows are gorgeous! The only bad thing about them is the price – $18 bucks a pop. But they are well worth the money. If you’ve been thinking about getting some of these shadows, go for it, you will absolutely not be disappointed!
murkyPear9
I really can’t understand all the negative reviews on these shadows! I find them brilliant quality, they blend really well and last all day on me. Much prefer them to my MAC ones which fade and vanish into each other.
I keep mine in their travel vault palette which is amazing and expensive looking with a nice sized mirror on it.
gloomyPretzels5
It took me a long time to put my finger on what exactly I disliked so much about these shadows and why I wasn’t reaching for them as much as my MAC shadows…
I got:
Cherry Cola
Cocoa Bear
Creme Brulee
Peach Smoothie
Cabin Fever
Tan Lines
Americano
First off, let me say that the shipping is a joke. It took forever to get my order – and apparently when you choose standard shipping on MUG, it usually will take that long to process/ship. Like, it took up to a week to process, then the shipping was the slowest method ever.
The next shipping option up was over $10, which would have taken 2-6 business days…. for a few eyeshadows? Ummm, no way.
Barring that, the eyeshadows themselves were a mess. Muddy is the word, now that I have been reading the reviews. They blend away, look dirty, clashed, unpolished, patchy, etc. Americano was the worst. It looks strong in the pan, but it blends away to a much sheerer, dulled out brown. Could NOT be applied wet as a liner. Looked greyish and dull. No depth.
I am a woman who works long hours and don’t have loads of time in the morning to futz with fussy eyeshadows with poor application. I ended up purging (see: throwing away) all of these MUG shadows and hauling a few MAC neutrals during a 15% off sale and I love them so much more – and now moreso that they’re priced the same as MUG. After Embark, I will never go back to Americano! I would NOT recommend MUG to women of color because the pigments will look dull and bland against those richer skintones.
gleefulLapwing3
Last year about this time I had one eye shadow and I would only wear on special occasions. My daily look was a black or brown (sometimes gray) eyeliner. For some reason I decided to go ape on eye shadows and have since then accumulated quite a few single shadows and 7 palettes. One thing that was missing was matte shadows, and that is where I turned to Makeup Geek.
I initially started with three shadows, but I have picked up a few more since….
Shimma Shimma – Nice champagne color, I use all over the lid but is used as a browbone or inner color highlight
Peach Smoothie – very nice peach color, but doesn’t really show up on my eyes, will use as a base shade
Creme Brulee – A favorite of mine, nice light to medium brown option, can be used for transition/crease or on the lid **
Frappe – Nice warm medium brown shade, I use for outer corner/crease. **
Cocoa Bear – darker brown with hints of red, nice warm shade
Goddess – coppery shade, use for outer corner (note – this one appears to be discontinued)
Lucky Penny – rosey taupe shade, can be used for lid or in outer corner/crease **
Burlesque – dark wine/burgundy shade, nice for outer corner **
Bake Sale – medium brown, maybe a little less warm, similar to Frappe
Roulette – rosy copper shade, very nice **
My definite favorites are Creme Brulee, Frappe, Lucky Penny, Burlesque and Roulette. I totally would buy these again. The others are nice as well, but will probably not repurchase. Overall, I am very pleased with the shades that I picked out and have made myself a nice little palette. Will I pick up more? I would yes, but am set with these for now.
A side note, I also have the travel vault from MUG which I put my small collection of shadows in. I really like this palette, it’s very sleek and it has a mirror too. It’s around $13 which might be a little pricey but it’s excellent quality and quite sturdy. I would purchase another one of these over the small Z palette any day.
Again, not an eyeshadow expert whatsoever but I do like these shadows I have more shadows from ColourPop but honestly I like both brands. I haven’t tried MAC, but most likely won’t as they aren’t CF. I have heard nice things about ABH but that’s a little out of my price range.
As I age, I find that I really need to get more matte eye shadows as they are more appropriate for my eye and frankly more flattering. I find these are really nice shadows and would not hesitate to try more colors. Also I find that all I need is a lid color, transition/crease color and maybe outer corner color and I am set. Some days I just use one color all over the lid, I can’t seem to get enough shades for that reason.
I give these 5 stars! One final comment, on placing my last order with MUG there was a little glitch with my order and it didn’t go through. I contacted customer service and they were extremely responsive and helpful. I really appreciated that.
