I love just about everything that I’ve tried from thebalm makeup-wise, but this is the first skincare item I’ve tried from them. The packaging fits into the rest of the products – pastel colours, vintage-looking and charming. It has a pump, which is great, though if I’m being picky I’d like the actual dispenser part to stick out a little bit further from the actual bottle. In order to dispens product into your hand (or in my case, onto my Foreo Luna Mini) you need to pick up the bottle and tilt it slightly. Not a dealbreaker obviously, but since I have my cleanser standing at my sink I like to just be able to push down on the pump.
I needed to switch cleanser because the foaming cleanser I was using was becoming too drying for me when autumn rolled around. And that’s actually what I like the most about this cleanser – it’s gentle, soothing and not drying in any way. In fact, my face feels pretty nourished from using this, without running into the problem of greasy residue. It removes makeup pretty well, though I do often need to grab a makeup remover for my eyes, if I want to avoid rubbing there a whole lot. Everything else on my face it removes pretty effortlessly.
It comes out the pump as a liquid, not foam like some products labelled “foaming cleanser” does. With my hands I can word up some lather, though not a huge amount. When poured onto my Luna Mini it creates a decent amount of lather, and it works well with the cleansing device.
The brand is cruelty free and paraben free, though I’m not sure if this product is vegan or not as I’m not too savvy with ingredients/reading ingredients lists at this point in time. I saw the people over at paula’s choice complaining about the inclusion of lavender oil (because it can be an irritant), but my skin has never reacted badly to lavender oil, quite the opposite, so to me that’s not a problem.
Things that I’m not thrilled about is the scent (smells more like plastic than actual lavender to me), the price and the fact that it doesn’t remove all my makeup. I was looking for the price at their website, but for some reason I couldn’t find the skincare line on thebalm’s website anymore. Not sure what that is about, if it’s being discontinued or revamped or what. I do remember shelling out more than I usually do for a cleanser though, and it hasn’t performed THAT much better than any other cleanser I usually gravitate towards during the colder months. I actually have a feeling you can get cleansers with more effective formulations for the same price. Therefore I probably wouldn’t repurchase, but I will definitely use it up and I do think it’s a good cleanser for (winter) dry skin.
