Meh. I’ve been using gentler, more natural cleansers for my combo skin . This has a mild scent, low suds and good ingredients. Not too impressed with makeup removal. At least it doesn’t overly dry my face. Still prefer my Allafia coconut wash

I am at wit’s end, trying to find a suitable facial cleanser: an inoffensive, natural/organic potion that cleans skin gently, and doesn’t exacerbate my adult acne. Earth Science Clarifying facial wash seemed promising, but delivered a weak punch, with a nasty smell to boot. The perpetual search continues.
I have pale, almost translucent, dry skin, with smatterings of white, subcutaneous bumps, a wealth of enlarged, congested pores on my nose and chin, and redness and pigmentation aggravated by temperature and bright sun. I suffer cystic hormonal breakouts in the hollows of my cheeks and along my jawline, which take weeks to quell, and leave angry purple pits in their wake. I also have the occasional hive or two from environmental pollution and undetermined irritants. My skin is too sensitive for the Retin-A and salicylic acid treatments of my teenage years, making this elusive form of acne in my late twenties all the more difficult to treat and prevent.
The clarifying wash by Earth Science has several good qualities: the pricepoint is fair for ingredients which appear to be purer and more benign than your average OTC face wash. The bottle contains a generous amount of gel, which lasted me four months of twice-daily use. The pump dispenser is tidy and sanitary. The cleanser lathers well but not excessively, and provides a comfortable slip to massage the skin without tugging it. The gel rinses cleanly, and does not leave the face stripped and squeaking.
The fragrance, though. In a word, revolting. It reminds me of a hospital ward; it’s a horrid combination of Orange-Glo spray cleaner and infirmity. I couldn’t get used to it, and the fragrance alone would prevent me from buying it again.
The verdict on my complexion after four months is… meh? I suppose my face looks refreshed the moment I’ve stepped out of the shower, and my breakouts are less severe, but the true test of efficacy, peering into the dreaded rearview mirror with unforgiving natural light, shows a face that seems more drab. My pores remain plugged, and I see new crops of congestion where there used to be smooth skin.

But I’ll talk about this product now.
I am a late 30’s female, with olive, combination/dry skin that used to to combo/oily. As I’ve aged and with SLE now in my life the products are used in my 20s irritate my now very delicate 30’s skin.
It’s not fun, because most things that are typically marketed to my age range are anti aging with bells and whistle’s retinal palmate his and that, ceramides, nicinamides…blahblahblah
These things don’t help me. They’re not for my sensitive skin. While we’re on that topic, it seems to me most products meant for sensitive skin are the harshest things ive used so what is up with that?
All that said…this cleanser does indeed have some extras. One of them being sea kelp extract, which varying sources rate as a 3-5 comedogenic rating. One one hand this cleanser does not
A) dry my skin
B) does not irritate my face
But…while I was using it, I started developing painful pimples.
NOW I CANNOT SAY FOR CERTAIN it’s this cleanser. I was doing the ole lemon and sugar cheap trick (aka cheap glycolic acid) and that increased cell turnover, perhaps causing the breakout I had.
I will use Dove for awhile. I would rather use a liquid cleanser with an optimal pH because I have learned there are NO decent bars of detergent with a proper pH except really nasty re batched stuff (looking at you Natures Plus) that is really…really old detergent that “ages” and thus lowers the pH. Sounds good…eh no.
So, when my skin has somewhat recovered.ill try it again.
***UPDATE*** Okay, I used to Dove to recover for a while and I am ready to give this cleanser the go around again. This time Im going to keep it simple and use ths to see what happens. Update in three weeks

September 2014- This cleanser was clogging my pores. There are a lot of cleansers with “film forming” agents and this is one. The film left behind is in theory supposed to protect the skin and respect the lipid barrier, but what film forming agents do in reality is prevent sebum from flowing freely from the pores.
I have stopped using this, Ive moved on to something else which I will review when the *entire* tube is gone.

I’ve used this in both the fragrance-free and the scented versions. Fragrance-free smells pretty much like nothing, but faintly plastic-like. Scented has a typical synthetic “clean smell”; not overpowering or annoying, but clearly unnecessary.
I like the packaging: tall, sleek bottle with a locking pump. The pump worked well; no issues with it breaking/clogging/etc.
The texture of this is that of a regular gel cleanser. It foams up well in my hands, and I found it to be very good at cleansing skin and removing light/moderate makeup. It did take a bit of work to rinse off; it kind of felt overly slick as I was rinsing, like it was difficult to get it all off. My skin felt nice after drying off; not too tight or dry, but clean and fresh. It also felt very smooth and soft. (Note: this would probably be too drying for anyone with normal to dry skin. Mine is combination/oily, and it felt very balanced after using this.)
With continued use, this had a very odd effect on my skin. On one hand, my skin seemed very soothed: the chronic redness I always have seemed diminished, and it seemed to keep larger breakouts at bay. However, something in it must have irritated me, because I found myself getting small, clear bumps in certain areas, which itched slightly and only went away when I stopped using the cleanser for several days in a row. This seemed mostly concentrated on my forehead, which is usually quite clear. Meanwhile, the breakout-prone zones of my face (cheeks and surrounding areas) seemed to respond well. Go figure.
I definitely recommend this since the cleanser is a pleasant product and performs well (and no 2 people have the same sensitivities), but I probably won’t repurchase for myself because the forehead bumps were just odd and unsettling.

I finally found my holy grail face wash! It doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight but at the same time it cleans well enough to leave my skin feeling clean. My skin has cleared up significantly and isn’t oily anymore! I use this with a Konjac sponge and moisturize with Josie Maran Argan oil. I used to wake up with a ton of oil all over my t zone and would immediately reach for cleansing wipes as soon as I got out of bed. I even stopped wearing makeup because nothing seemed to be able to control the oil and I just looked like a oily hot mess by the end of the day. Oil led to breakouts and uneven skin. I found this in my search for ph balanced cleansers and have never looked back. It’s cheap and it works. I wake up every day to clean clear skin and NO OIL!!

This does not have a strong scent(thank goodness) and it has really cleared up my skin. I also experience zero tightness after washing. New favourite.

Why I like it:
– it has natural ingredients and barely any fragrance
– it is sulfate free
– it removes makeup well
– it cleanses oily skin without over drying
– it’s fairly cheap (about $12 after tax)
The slight cons:
– though my skin does feel less oily after use I still have some shine
– it can irritate my eyes sometimes
Overall this is a good one! Even though picking this up requires a separate trip to the natural foods store I would still pick this over any sulfate filled drugstore brand any day.

I purchased this because it was fragrance free, has a pH of 5, and I needed a morning cleanser. This product is meant for combination to oily skin types. The label states that this gently cleanses skin without leaving it feeling dry. While this cleanser did not leave my skin feeling dry and tight, it did not leave if feeling as clean as when I use Free & Clear cleanser. I would be hesitant to use this at night to remove my sunscreen and makeup. Another cleanser that I like better is the fragrance free Alpha Rephreshing face wash with a pH of 6.2.

I am on a quest to find a natural or organic face wash and I settled on this for the time being. I have the matching clarifying toner which I love. I found this facial wash a bit drying around my nose, but my skin looks less congested and my face was left soft on the rest of my face so go figure. It does a good job of removing my foundation and doesn’t irritate my skin or leave it red. I can get it to lather well for me if I pump into my hands first and I like that it is a gel since I have oily skin. I only need one pump of the bottle. It has good ingredients which I admire. I cross my fingers this doesn’t stop working out for me. Update: Yup, this is not working out for me as much as I wanted it to be. It has been two months so far and my skin is not too happy with me. The cleanser is very drying, especially around my nose, chin, and forehead areas. My cheeks are less flushed and pores look clean there, but my forehead is breaking out from one of the ingredients . I will have to stop using this and maybe move on to something else I can find at Wholefoods. So sad.

I like that this face wash gently cleanses your skin without making my skin feel dry and tight afterwards. I have acne combination skin and this hasn’t cause me to break out. However it’s not great if you need deep cleansing. The smell is okay not appealing.

I have always struggled with not being able to find a good balance for my skin. If I use a cream cleanser, its too oily. If I use a gel cleanser, its on the dry side. I use this cleanser at night (because it does an awesome job at removing makeup) in conjunction with a cream cleanser (Earth Science ADE Cream Cleanser) in the morning. My skin is now perfectly balanced and looks and feels better than it ever has. Both of these cleansers from Earth Science are awesome and for once I dont have a single spot on my face…glad to have found a regimen that works!
