I really hate spray dry shampoos. They’re very messy and so much product comes out that my dark blond hair ends up with a grayish cast no matter how much I brush the powder out. I’ve tried Batiste, Fructis Volume Extend, Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak, Beyond the Zone, Amika and R&Co, and none of them performed very well (although Amika was the best but is $25 a can, so uh, NO!) So I’m left with half empty cans of spray dry shampoo taking up space in my hall closet. I had pretty much given up the quest of finding a dry shampoo at all when I happened upon this Alterna dry shampoo powder which was on the clearance shelf at Ulta. It’s a very small container and I had my doubts that it would be an improvement on the sprays, but because Ulta has a great return policy, I decided to take the chance. I used it on 3rd day hair that was beginning to show some oiliness at the roots. I applied the powder in 1/2 sections from ear to ear, avoiding my part, and applying a little of the powder to my hands in order to reach the back. I then rubbed the powder in really well, just like regular shampoo. I then waited about 15-20 minutes while I applied my makeup, during which time most of the oil was absorbed. I then used a 100% boar bristle brush (plastic bristles don’t work for this maneuver) to brush out what little residue remained. My hair definitely looked and felt cleaner and the fragrance was really great, like fruity shampoo. It also had some nice volume. I then recurled my hair and sprayed some shine spray and was out the door with great looking hair. All dry shampoos leave a matte finish, which I’m not thrilled about, but the shine spray takes care of this issue. This powder definitely performed better than any of the spray dry shampoos I’ve used. It’s very easy to control the amount of powder and very little is required to do the job so this small 1 ounce container will last a lot longer than you might expect. I also like that this product does not contain talc, which firstly is a carcinogen and secondly, is almost impossible to brush out and is largely responsible for the grayish cast (you might as well use pure baby powder). This powder is very light and the scent is refreshing and I got some nice volume to boot!! I also used this powder the next day with equally good results, although I did use less product than the first day because most of the oil had already been taken care of. I think this is a great product and I’m going back to Ulta to get the other one I saw on the shelf (hopefully it’ll still be there, lol!). I don’t know if this product has been discontinued or not but it looks like Ulta will no longer be carrying it in the store (maybe it’s still online). I know that Alterna Caviar also has a powder dry shampoo so maybe that’s an acceptable substitute for the Alterna Bamboo. All in all, my results with this dry shampoo powder were really good and I’m pleased with my bargain purchase. I hope this small container will last a while though. Spray dry shampoos probably have very little actual powder in them, which is a likely reason why they don’t last very long at all. For example, I used the Fructis Volume Extend about 4 times before the can ran out. So it’s definitely not a bargain. With this Alterna Bamboo dry shampoo powder, it takes very little powder and it works so much better than any dry shampoo I’ve used so far. I’m giving this powder the full five lippies. It’s a really great product that I hope has not been taken out of commission. I definitely recommend it.

The scent to this dry shampoo alone is AMAZING. Coconut and mango make it feel like summer no matter how cold the weather is in the Midwest. 🙂
I have been a dry shampoo junkie for years. (Tried tons from drugstore, Sally Beauty, and salon) This is one of my favorites.
So on to Alterna Bamboo beach. This is a great Talc free dry shampoo. Great at absorbing oils on second, third or more days past a shampoo. I find that I can easily go up to 3 even 4 days without having to shampoo with this dry shampoo. It is a very fine white dry shampoo in a shaker bottle. I am not a fan of the shaker bottle, so I dumped this product into an empty blow pro faux dry shampoo bottle. (PS I like the Blow Pro faux dry as well…it’s less expensive then the alterna) The Alterna dry shampoo
works great in that bottle.
It is pricey, however I only need a little “puff” to my bangs and another “puff” or two to my part, finger tousle and go. It lasts a long time if one is not heavy handed.
Hair is left looking great, no more greasy roots. Great texture to my fine straight hair, great for braids. Does not leave hair sticky or stiff like some of my former favorite dry shampoo’s (Bedhead Rock-a-holic…still like it and will continue to buy it).
