This base coat is for dry, brittle or ridged nails. My nails are dry and I have two nails with slight ridges.
It’s opaque white in the bottle and goes on clear matte. It has a thin texture, which makes it only fair as a ridge filler, and works best if ridges are not too deep (or use two coats). The silk fibers aren’t noticeable.
The first time I used it seven nails broke off at the tips after one day, so I won’t be using it again.
It doesn’t contain formaldehyde, toluene, or DBP.

I have been using this product for quite a while. I really love Hydrating Ridge Filler because when I use it my manicures seem to last quite a while without chipping. It does not COMPLETELY fill my ridges, but it gives my nails a smoother surface which makes my polish apply a little easier.
Hydrating Ridge Filler is really expensive, so I usually try to hunt it down at discount retailers before purchasing it for full price. I have found it at Ross and TJ Maxx for around $2.99.

I needed a replacement for Sally Hansen Nail Quencher which is reportedly discontinued and I can’t find it in any store anymore. I couldn’t find this at TJ Maxx/Marshalls/etc for cheap as other reviewers so I got some on ebay.
The Ridge Filling doesn’t work for me but it doesn’t make my nails peel, keeps the stains away and performs just like my SH NQ but with a bigger price tag. Good enough for me! If anyone lives in KOP and has spotted this for less, please let me know!

I was hesitant about this base coat, but I’ve tried many drugstore options that all were a disappointment (and I don’t care what a company might say about their polish, I would never go without base coat). I didn’t expect this to work any miracle and fill the deep ridges I have on my fingernails and toenails, so I did buff them first, but this time I was not obsessive about getting them 100% smooth as that weakens my nails (and they are pretty thick and strong to begin with). I thought this would leave a whitish color behind, since it is nearly opaque in the bottle, but was pleasantly surprised when it dried nearly clear (only the tiniest hint of a milky color left behind). It dries very fast, so apply quickly, and it’s matte, which I did not know. The first time I used it was with a very dark color (OPI Lincoln Park After Dark – separate review), and my manicure lasted without touch-ups for three days without a single chip, after that small chips started to appear and by the time a week was over I needed to redo the polish. Still, that was the longest a dark color had ever lasted without damage. Also, my fingernails only ended up with one white (weak) spot afterward from the buffing, whereas I usually get five to eight weak spots. I loved the results and will buy this again. The only thing I didn’t like was the handle, it would have been better as a plain cylinder rather than the faceted-sides which make my hand cramp after a while from gripping it so tightly.

Holy Grail for certain. I like using this by itself sometimes, 2 coats gives a satiny, smooth touch to my nails that makes them look professional and finished when you don’t want to use color. Regular use along with Barielle’s Nail Rebuilding Protein has made my nails strong and peel-free.
Well worth the full price if you can’t find it in TJ Maxx and/or Marshalls.

This stuff is $14 at CVS, but I was at Marshalls and found it for $3.99 so I picked it up. It dries quickly but did not leave an entirely smooth surface the way Nailtek Foundation II does. I would definitely buy it again though. Probably not for $14 though.

This replenishing process helps provide a moisture balance necessary to have flexible nails and prevent brittleness and breakage. One coat will help to smooth the surface of the nail, filling in any imperfections.”
I gotta agree with DCMALJ- this product just isn’t as great as Barielle’s Natural Nail Camo on my nails. Granted my nails aren’t brittle and dry, so I really don’t need the hydration this product is supposed to provide. (Though it couldn’t hurt.) But as far as being a ridgefiller, I think this one is pretty poor. Not as bad as Seche’s ridgefilling basecoat on my nails, but not great, either. My nails have plenty of ridges, and this basecoat just didn’t fill them in very well with the recommended one coat. I can definitely still see some ridges after my nails have been painted. And to top it off, the polish on two of my nails peeled from the tip of my nails. That’s not normal and I attribute the peeling to this basecoat. I’ve tried it a few times, and it just isn’t going to work for me. If you’re looking for a good basecoat from Barielle, I would recommend Natural Nail Camouflage Anti-Aging Ridge Filler over their Hydrating Ridge Filler. Barielle products can be purchased from their website, or more cheaply at TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

I’m going to have to disagree with the other reviewer, I’m afraid. I came across this product while looking for Barielle Natural Nail Camouflage, and bought it since I couldn’t find Camo. It’s *not* a good substitute! Camo is an amazing base coat (see my review of it), but this one was gloppy and did not apply smoothly, and does not last well for me unless I use another base coat under it. If you’re looking for just a ridge filler, OPI’s is much better for 1/2 the price.

I absolutely love this stuff and can’t rave enough about it. I bought it out of sheer desperation because my ridges were annoying me and the gals at the local mani/pedi told me that it’s bad to file away the ridges – something about it makes your nail weaker.
Luckily I spotted this at my local beauty store and lo and behold, the ridges are fading as we speak. I’m over the moon w/ happiness. The only downside is the price. This baby is not cheap but so worth it in my honest opinion.
One last note, when it dries, it does leave a faint creamish finish – due to the silk fibers.
