It is said to be a gel mask that can also be used as a night cream.
It is a water-in-silicone emulsion that does provide continuous moisture to the skin, however, can be perceived as a bit oily at application.
This product from Vichy will absorb into the skin eventually, although I find that this took some time.
After it is absorbed, it will leave a thin hydrating veil on the skin that actually could be used as an excellent make-up primer were it used during the day.
The product is designed to be used either as a night mask a few times a week or as a night cream. (However, it does not prevent one from using it as a day cream 🙂 )
The emulsion is based on a lighter silicone oil (dimethicone) and a silicone emulsifier. Some humectants are added in the form of glycerin propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol.
The product does contain some truly excellent actives as vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) in a higher concentration (my guess is around 3% although it can be even as high as 5%), the proven anti-oxidant Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract and Resveratrol along with probiotic Bifida Ferment Lysate (this we all know from EL Advanced Night Repair). Bifida Ferment Lysate is a DNA-protective and repairing active with proven results. Although in this formula the concentration is too low for this. It will rather play a role of helping the skin’s microflora and probably to underline the anti-oxidant protection activity of Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract and Resveratrol.
I find this product a bit heavy and not absorbing quick enough.
But what I think was a real mistake of L’Oreal (owner of Vichy) is to colour this originally white emulsion to a strong caramel colour. While the colouring used is of natural origin (Caramel), it lends a rather peculiar colour to a cosmetic product.
I would have either left it glossy white as these type of emulsions tend to be, or coloured pink/peach-pink for a more pleasing appearance (compared to how it looks today).
It is possible that the effect was to create a feeling of some kind of algae-like jelly, that rather ended up something else. First, the product has no connection to any marine-ideas in the form of raw-materials used or in the claims. Secondly, jelly of algae is more transparent, while this emulsion is more opaque (as it should be).
It is very possible that if the emulsion had been left white, the consumer could have got the impression of not containing any actives or they are in a very low quantities?
I also find the fragrance rather disturbing.
I believe that this could have been an excellent and truly hydrating and moisturizing product, was it not for the peculiar colouring and the strange fragrance.
Hopefully the colouring will be removed and the fragrance changed/less used of or entirely omitted.
