You only need to read my Crème De La Mer review from last year to know how much I detest the over-inflated prices of so-called ‘luxury’ brands. La Prairie is no exception. The brand has an extensive number and combination of products for you to choose from…I just counted 14 serums and essences alone! According to the SA I met with yesterday I should purchase the following combination of products, considering anti-aging prevention is one of my biggest concerns and I’m currently staying in a colder climate part of the country where my skin is acting more ‘normal’:
Foam cleanser, Cellular lotion, Essence-in-lotion, Liquid Lift, Eye Complex and Luxe cream sheer.
That right there is $1740 (!!) worth of products…which may I add doesn’t include the many optional ‘add-ons’ such as Skin caviar foundation, Body Souffle or Sleep Mask which could easily bump it up to the 3 or 4k mark!
Now as I’ve mentioned before with CDLM, there’s NOTHING in these products, in any product period – that justifies these crazy prices. If people knew the actual manufacture cost of any of these ‘luxury’ products they would be shocked! Even LP’s ‘Skin Caviar Luxe Mask’ – a product which I love and have used over the years, I simply can’t get my head around the price and that’s probably the biggest reason I don’t keep going out and re-purchasing it. How can I justify to myself spending $385 on a mask that probably cost LP something like $15 to produce? And had the SA had her way I would be lining someone, somewhere’s pockets oh so nicely this weekend. Sorry but nope, not happening!
So instead I settled for the 0.17 fl oz sample size of the ‘Essence-in-lotion’. This is one of the most cost effective products that LP offer imo. You only use a few drops of this which means this products LASTS and then some (comes in a 5.0 fl oz size). Is it yet another unnecessary step in a never-ending routine designed to make you bankrupt and someone else rich…? Of course it is! But it’s also one of their better anti-aging formulations ingredients-wise and ideal for those with normal to oily/combination skin types. Reason being: it is super-light. I tried this out last night and then again this morning and it literally vanished into my skin within seconds – similarly to Clinique’s new Jelly but even faster absorbing. Both times I followed with a moisturizer as although my skin ‘felt’ smoother (Dimethicone ahem!) it also felt like it needed more hydration. On the other hand I should warn you that IT STINKS. Pure unadulterated grandma’s perfume from the 60’s. And it’s not subtle. If you don’t get along well with perfumed products or silicones you’re best skipping this product, or like I plan to just use every other day to avoid a breakout.
As a stand-alone anti-aging product it’s not the best out there by a long shot but if you want to try something out from the LP range but find most of their products too heavy, then you may like this. Definitely ask for a sample before buying or get one from e-bay. I know a lot of people don’t trust what’s offered on there but as far as I’m aware you don’t come across counterfeit samples on e-bay as they’re mostly unprofitable for the counterfeiters, they’re too busy focusing on re-creating the full size products to make a lot more $$$ from. I’ve yet to come across a sample that I believe to be counterfeit and believe me I’ve purchased many!
As ever with products like this I’m conflicted as to whether I’ll buy again. I’d like to think that this is one I will as it is good ‘bang for my buck’ and to some degree justifies the price when considering how much usage you can get from it. The ingredients are quite good too (some, not all!). The packaging – which as with all LP packaging I absolutely adore and would gladly line every cabinet and shelf in my house with LP if I ever wont the lotto (highly doubt that’s gonna happen anytime soon though!). I’ll continue to use the sample up, sparingly and report back if anything else happens. It’s not going to last me long enough to see any real changes in my skin but at least I can truly put it to the test for suitability.

At first I wasn’t sure if I should buy it. But after trying the sample. I was so sold by it. I would buy this more than buying a toner for my skin. After cleansing my skin, I put this, then a serum and then the moisturiser. It just does wonders!

I to wondered if i needed an essence but i gave in and as usual purchased la prairie. You only need a few drops to cover your whole face It feels amazingly smoothing and soft as you pat it on and it absorbs well with no stickyness it also has no burning or stinging when i use it after my perscription retin a cream. a real bonus indead. I then follow with moisturiser usually a la prairie and swiss ice dry oil just a drop or to added to mousturiser. I love the way my skin is looking and performing and after only a week of use i cant imagine not useing this essence. My only issue is you have to pour the essence out. i would prefer a dropper for ease of use and it would save any waste.so less a few lippys. The dry oil has a dropper. Otherwise this product is now permanent in my routine. i know it is expensive but i think anyone would enjoy this product and see an improvement in their skin

Essences are popping up everywhere, seemingly from every brand. I’ve tried essences by SK-II and La Mer, and La Prairie’s essence beats both. I honestly don’t know whether or not I believe this is a necessary step in my already lengthy skin care regimen, but this essence feels and smells delightful upon application and I do feel as though it prepares my skin for serum and cream following use. My pores are less noticeable and my skin looks and feels very smooth and soft.
If most or all of your skin care products are La Prairie, you will absolutely benefit from this essence. I use the Skin Caviar line, so this addition makes sense. I subtracted a star because I did find it to cause an occasional pimple on my chin, which is the only ‘combination’ area on my face. Overall a great product worth the money!
