Used to use Stridex alcohol-free pads in the red tub after cleansing. Even though I have acne-prone, congested, oily skin those stripped and dried out my skin a lot. I switched to these after changing my cleansers and lotions to Neutrogena as well (I think since products are formulated to work together, why not?) and it works to reduce my overall facial redness and acne marks/size without causing any sensitivity. These do have alcohol in them so I’m surprised that these were a lot more gentle on my skin than the Stridex.

Bought these because I was searching for a drug store SA alternative, and they were recommended on a blog. Hated them. Hated the fragrance and they really dried out my combination skin (back then it was tending towards oily, now it tends towards dry). Also, they did not clear my skin at all, not even the blackheads on my nose. These are more drying than stridex pads (red plastic jar, no alcohol). Perhaps best for very oily, very thick skin. Normally I can tolerate some alcohol, not these.

I like these as a drugstore SA option. I picked them up because of a review I saw on Caroline Hirons’ blog. The directions on the packaging instruct to use these one-three times per day. I think the alcohol content is way too harsh/drying/irritating to use these every single day, which is evident once you open the jar. The strong alcohol scent is very potent. I do feel these were the most helpful when swiping over any problem areas on my jaw line, and especially on my chest or shoulders, which is the purpose I would end up repurchasing for. I think Nip & Fab makes better SA/glycolic pads for the face or even Stridex feels slightly more mild on the face than these do!

I’ve been using these since a young to mid teen (I’m 23 now). I used them daily as a teen and they really helped prevent acne, and would clear acne quickly with use. I stopped using them daily for the past few years, but I’m starting to use them more often again because I started breaking out. It’s one of the products I can count on.

These little guys deserve more love! Cleared my cystic acne right up, I couldn’t even believe it. I see some people use these to wash their face? That’s not what they’re for, wash your face first, follow up with these on slightly damp skin, let absorb and then use your moisturizer, then sunscreen if daytime. That’s what I do and I am telling you these suckers changed my skin! Always had at least two or three cystic bumps, sometimes a lot more, hormonal on my chin. Now I almost never get cystic acne, I might get a few regular zits if I’m lazy about face washing, but that’s it! A godsend! They work great to prevent acne but they didn’t work so well for pigmentation or some very stubborn clogged pores on my chin. Trying different BHA products to see if I can kick it up a notch. But I love these things and am so grateful for them, and also the skincare addiction Reddit community for turning me on to acids in general. Wish I knew about them YEARS ago. Sometimes I use these twice a day, but usually only once because they can be drying. Less is more with skincare. If you’re blessed with that lovely gunky clogged up acne prone skin (Yaaaay, it’s so fun!) try chemical exfoliation, it might just change your life! Also wanted to add I’ve been using these for two and a half years!
Update 3/21/17: Now that my cystic acne is gone (hooray!) and my skin is much more balanced, I no longer use these, I find them too drying due to the high alcohol content. I still highly recommend this product, they saved my skin when it was overproducing oil like a fountain, and breaking out constantly in huge cystic acne. They gave me normal skin! So they are definitely a great entry into chemical exfoliants. Chemical exfoliation can be drying so at some point you will have to address that. It can take a very long time! (In my case three years of DAILY use!) I now seek out products with lactic acid, because that acid is a humectant and actually draws water to the skin. I do not notice dryness when I use lactic acid. Glycolic acid is a humectant also but my skin doesn’t tolerate it as well. I still keep these on hand for my teenage son, and who knows, I might start using them again in the summer.

I recently changed my skin regimen and this was part of it because of all the good things my friend was saying about it. I think it did help with some pimples but it might’ve made them more red. I use 2-3 pads per day and it’s pretty strong so if you get these start with 1 a day or you might experience more redness around more areas. I prefer this over a regular toner though as it does reduce size of pimples.

First of all, I wouldn’t repurchase and I have finished one whole bottle of this. These pads would be great if they didn’t have so much alcohol. It has so much that it stings my eyes. These pads are also large, so they can be cut in half to last longer. However, cutting them in half makes them almost too small and whole size is definitely too much. I wish them came in a medium size.
Pros: Did not dry my skin out. Noticeable difference in number of breakouts. Dries quickly.
Cons: Smell bothered my eyes, alcohol bothered my eyes. Didn’t make a difference for blackheads/pores, and for breakouts that were already out. Packaging leaks fluid when traveling.

My acne has been pretty constant, never looking very clear and some weeks being way worse than others. I had used these pads in the past and loved the tingling feeling on my skin that felt cleansing and refreshing. I decided to repurchase them to see if they would keep my infinite blackheads under control and help clear some of my most stubborn spots.
I have seen some improvement in the clarity of my skin over the past couple of weeks. I will use this pads after washing and gently exfoliating my face, then apply a Cetaphil lotion approximately 5 minutes afterwards to avoid drying out my skin. I do this morning and night, so the container lasts about a month. The improvement in my skin has not been big enough for me to go shout to the world to buy the product, but I have noticed that my skin is less oily throughout the day. This is the only change to my skin care in the past three weeks and I have developed three cystic type spots, but two are near the bridge of my nose (the worst kind!) and I have been wearing my glasses more often so I am blaming that.
Recommend for light acne/blackheads as an addition to your skin care regimen. May help manage oily skin, but use in conjunction with a quality moisturizer. My skin is not too sensitive so I only experience a tingling, no burn. Do not apply to any open cuts/sores or you will experience severe burning pain.

This is one of the few decent BHA products that one can find in drugstores in the U.S. I initially picked it up because I couldn’t handle the menthol in the Stridex pads.
So this product, when you open it and smell it…someone described it as a Screwdriver (drink), and that’s incredibly accurate. It smells like oranges and vodka. The smell of the alcohol is so intense it’s actually kind of scary.
As far as the product’s performance, it performed pretty well…it helped to clear my pores (especially minimizing the appearance of my sebaceous filaments on my nose!) and got rid of the blackheads I had. Unfortunately, even waiting days between uses, the product eventually just dried my skin too much to continue using it. I’m 100% convinced that it’s the alcohol in the product. Overall, I wouldn’t be comfortable using a product with that much alcohol in it for the long term anyways, but I had to give it a shot.
(I do still use this product, just not on my face…I use it on my body to prevent ingrown hairs from shaving, waxing, or epilating and it works GREAT for that!)
If you are going to use this product, I would not recommend using it every night, and make sure to use it with a good moisturizer to counteract the drying effects of the alcohol.
