The review is for paper mask version. 4 paper masks for $62.50 as of today in the USA, more expensive in some other countries like mine.
WAY OVERPRICED, almost feels like some kind of fraud. Sometimes a product has such a long list of beneficial ingredients, has a healthy packaging to store the ingredients effective, it might worth the price. But there is expensive, and then there’s overpriced. This mask definitely falls into overpriced category.
Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Pentaerythrityl Tetraoctanoate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Alcohol Denat., Betaine, Peg-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Squalane, Tocopheryl Acetate, Xanthan Gum, Arginine HCL, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Glucosyl Hesperidin, Ginseng Extract, Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate, Hydroxyproline, Raspberry Extract, Chlorella Vulgaris Extract, Sodium Citrate, Carbomer, BHT, Potassium Hydroxide, Retinol, Polysorbate 20, Citric Acid, Alcohol, Trisodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Fragrance, Beta-Carotene
Its ingredients are not terrible. It indeed has quite a few good ingredients in the formula. But it also has problematic ones like…
Alcohol denat: Not every alcohol is bad for skin, but alcohol denat is one of the bad ones.
Alcohol: It has a second alcohol but the type of it was not given. It may or may not be a no-no alcohol.
Perfume: Might be irritating for some people and can cause break outs.
Methylparaben: I stay away from parabens as much as possible since it’s a controversial ingredient. Google ‘paraben health risks.’
It has good ingredients of course, including retinol, which is the only scientifically proven thing to reduce the appearance of wrinkles a bit on some people. But retinol is the 26th on the 34 ingredients, meaning the amount of it is not high. There are moisturizers and serums out there with higher retinol amount. Not saying higher retinol is necessarily better, but retinol seems to be an expensive ingredient even in medical acne creams, in this mask it’s just not listed so high that it would make the cost more expensive for Shiseido.
Three other reasons why the mask is overpriced:
– The price is just for FOUR masks! Retinol or any other ingredient will not do any significant difference on your wrinkles or anything else. Those who see the benefit of retinol products on their wrinkles use their retinol product at least couple times a week, and see some improvement on their wrinkles some weeks/months later if they will. Four masks won’t do anything! So you are paying this price just for hydration and brightness of the skin and you can for sure get those from a cheaper moisturizer, or serum, even some oils can do that. While I believe the product might have make some people’s skin look good, you can still have your skin look good for a much cheaper price!
– If I’m going to spend that much money on a product, it MUST NOT have any problematic ingredient, let alone multiple ingredients for my skin and possibly general health.
– As I wrote earlier packaging can make the expense higher for the brand, but this is just a paper mask. Not like it’s a moisturizer/serum in a glass bottle.
I got two of these masks as a gift, definitely will not be buying. If you are willing to spend the amount of money Shiseido asks for this mask, there are really quite a few equally good/better products with or without retinol that will last you longer than four times.

I saw someone with beautiful and asked them their secret…..and they swore by this mask! I was apprehensive in purchasing (so expensive), but they gave me an idea. Since there are two halves, you can open one and rub one half into your face, neck, chest, and hands. I didn’t take it off and went to bed. I even have enough to put on 2 coats. (That way, you can double the uses.) Because of the price, I’m going to keep the use to special occasions – but if money weren’t an issue, I’d do it once a week.
Results: soft, dewey skin the next morning that lasted well into the next day. I even had a stranger ask me the following day what I did to keep my skin so smooth. A similar, much cheaper mask, is the Black Pearl Mask Whitening Nourishing that is available on Amazon. It’s Japanese, I can’t tell you the ingredients. What I can tell you is it is a very close second for a fraction of the cost.

It is a really good mask, except for some of the ingredients such propylen glycol and others that make me want to throw it in their face. It is way expensive though: 4 masks for 60 dollars? Of course it is a good substitution for facials which cost you more – but I use a brightening product already and if I want a hydrating mask I just put layers of moisturizer on my face. It works fine.
The packaging is amazing, as usual. You are almost intimidated at the sight of it.

i recieved 2 retinol face masks as samples, and after using it i only wished i could afford to purchase the full pack of 4 pairs. the mask is liquidy paper sheets with cutouts for the eyes and mouth, and you apply for 15 minutes. when i first removed the mask that evening there wasn’t much to notice besides a dewy finish, but the next morning my skin was bright, clear and beautiful. i can only dream of what my skin would look like if i used this mask 2-3 times a week as recommended on the pouch! i’m in my mid-30s, with dry sensitive skin, and noticed no irritation whatsoever from this retinol mask.
