This pills badly, so I only use at night. I saw no visible results, like I did with TO Resveratrol. This reads like an antioxidant workhorse but since I really need it in the AM on work days with pollution and sunlight and all, and I’m unable to due to pilling, I use at night. This dries in a film like texture, no matter what I mix it with I cannot get it just right. This will make you a bit more tanned too. I really wanted to like this but I just see nothing. I will finish this but will not re-buy. I like TO Resveratrol much more since there are visible results. I like the pump, which I will keep for other TO bottles.

Survival 0 is pleasant, well priced, and useful.
Its purposes are twofold, though not entirely exclusive. It contains purified lutein and fractionated melanin, which have been shown to reduce the effects of high energy visible light—i.e. blue light, which is emanating from your phone/tablet/computer screen right now—on the skin. It also contains a number of antioxidants, including superoxide dismutase and lipochroman-6, which scavenge reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and, aptly, deal with the effects of photodamage.
The product comes in a dark glass bottle to help prevent excess light penetration, but it’s still best to keep it away from light. The dispenser may depend on where you purchase your bottle, as another reviewer indicated a change from dropper to pump while I experienced the opposite and received my most recent order with droppers. (I ordered these from a UK site as opposed to a US site.) I wouldn’t worry about this as the serum empties relatively quickly. Instructions say to use liberally, and the non-viscous, slightly milky, scentless, tan-hued liquid also lends itself to heavier application. The color blends to a sheer glow on fair skin and will be indiscernible on medium–dark tones.
Survival 0 is a more than adequate supplement to morning ascorbic acid and sunscreen. Deciem’s product description indicates the 0 version for nighttime use, but I like the convenience of purchasing one product for day and night and the ability to use my preferred sunscreen. Survival layers well over other serums and under moisturizer, so daytime use is not an issue.
I do think it’s important to have reasonable expectations using a product like Survival 0. It’s a largely preventive and protective product and not a targeted treatment product, by which I mean its visible effects are limited. While antioxidant activity may contribute to more immediate skin health, its greater contribution is to long-term ageing (or prevention thereof). Its efficacy regarding HEV light prevention is undetectable to the eye, especially as HEV lacks the immediate consequences of UV(B) overexposure. This is the sort of product you use because you know it will help in the long run.

Survival 0 is the most innovative antioxidant serum I’ve ever had the pleasure of using, and for just 25 CAD, I feel like I’m getting so much bang for my buck. I’d have taken a lippie off if they were still using the old-style dropper bottle, but they’ve since switched to a pump bottle to preserve the integrity of the ingredients – and I couldn’t be happier.
This is a golden-hued serum that dissolves nicely into the skin, leaving it with an imperceptible and lit-from-within glow. It’s perfect under sunscreen to scavenge free radicals from UV photons that get past the sunscreening agents. Because this has squalane and jojoba oil, I find that I can skip my moisturiser if I use this in the daytime.
The ingredients list is seriously insane. You’ve got Astaxanthin, Xantophyll, Pycnogenol, Tomato Carotenoids, Lutein, Superoxide Dismutase, Dimethylmethoxy Chromanol, Fractionated Melanin (!!! – protects you from Blue Light), Prebiotics, and a bunch of amino acids – just to name a few. Jeez, I reckon companies like La Mer would charge you $800 for this if they could, but having it for $25… talk about democratised beauty. I’m of the opinion that this is one of the most important products a person can have in their anti-aging arsenal.

I am enjoying trying new (and affordable) products offered by Deciem, and their NIOD brand is no exception. I wanted to try their Survival 0 and Survival 30, but at the time only the basic NIOD Survival 0 was available. The NIOD Survival 0 is an antioxidant serum that can be used with or on it’s own from the Survival SPF’s. My first couple weeks of use I applied at night after essence but before moisturizers. This has a light liquid-y texture and absorbs quickly. This does have a bit of color to it so I would not recommend using this if you are wearing very light colored clothes because this can transfer slightly. I must say that using this has given my skin an extra bit of glow to it, and this never caused me to breakout which was a good thing. This also layered quite well and never pilled. I started using this in the morning before applying sunscreen and primer, this was a good addition because it hydrated my skin but never made it look shiny or greasy, and again never caused any pilling. I’m also a fan of the new packaging in which NIOD now uses for their entire Survival Collection- instead of the dropper bottle they now use an open/close pump bottle- much more convenient for travelling and storing. I got Survival 0 together with Survival 30 sunscreen as the concept of an antioxidant treatment intrigued me. It’s really nice. In bottle and less so on skin it smells herbal/metallic (faintly reminiscent of tomatoes), but it’s not strong or lingering. Texture wise it’s lightweight gel-fluid, maybe a tad tacky finish, but it absorbs into skin almost within seconds. I use about 3 droppers full on face alone, it’s that lightweight. The hydrating effect of Survival 0 is consistent with that of other amino acid loaded products (the slightly tacky, but silk smooth feel, but that is also partially due to glycerin). It’s not like the way hyaluronic acid products hydrate skin and plump up fine lines visibly, but the effect is really nice (I generally use an additional hyaluronic product (Hada Labo) under Survival 0). The most noticeable instant effect is the warm tint, though. It’s probably the carotenoids. The tint instantly makes skin look more glow-y (washes off, though). That together with the hydrating ingredients alone make Survival 0 a killer product to use on dehydrated and tired, dull skin. Other great effect is, when used overnight, visibly brighter and more even skin tone the next morning which impresses me, as there are so few products that do that to me (a good ascorbic acid or green tea product and a few Sisley products have similar effect). The effect doesn’t stack up though, at least not so far, and seems to be temporary, but it’s just a skin care product, so I take whatever benefit I can get. No breakouts, no irritations, in fact Survival 0 is actually somewhat calming. I’m seriously considering adding Survival 0 to my routine permanently (maybe both AM and PM), there’s nothing horribly bad about this product so far (the dropper bottle doesn’t bother me with this as it does with the Survival 30 sunscreen). Survival 0 does seems to transfer to light fabrics a bit, though, but I wear a metric ton of make-up anyhow, so it doesn’t shock me to find pigments on clothes, but it’s worth noting. EDIT: After going through the whole bottle I don’t see it has made a lasting difference to my skin, not in a way a proven antioxidant like ascorbic acid would so it doesn’t make the cut. It’s a nice addition, but not a powerful workhorse.
