This newly released product from their AGE SMART collection is a Vitamin C enriched Serum. It is a mix between an oil and traditional water based serum. You can really smell the chia when you apply this serum which is beautiful, actually smells quite healthy and nourishing. Other than the generous helping of proven skin care actives my only bone to pick is that it contains grapefruit peel essential oil which for me is a problem as they irritate my skin and almost always brings out a pimple or two.
Essential oils are not necessary in my opinion, their is limited research and any real established benefit yet since Dermalogica sells in Spas worldwide they need a spa like product no matter how cosmeceutical it is.
This is a lovely Vitamin C product that was purchased recently for my for my birthday from my dearest and closest friend. Whilst I did get excellent visible brightening results from the jam packed formula I unfortunately had to alternate it’s use as it contains an ingredient I cannot bear, grapefruit essential oil. These along with many other citrus essential oils, grapefruit peel, orange, lemon, tangerine etc all possess mild photo toxic properties and I just don’t think it is responsible to include these ingredients in products intended for daylight use. Sun and citrus essential oils are not a good idea and are known to increase pigmentation. Whilst I personally have had no problems using it than the oft blind pimple here and there as all essential oils do, I still recommend caution with other consumers. The ingredient list is a rather generous one with proven actives and research backed ingredients, all in a syrupy serum texture that absorbs easily and is perfect to layer and boost your sunscreen’s effectiveness. Vitamin C I have read is more effective during the daytime as that is when skin is using most of it’s antioxidant stores, save your evening routine for Vitamin A and Retinol etc for night time repair. I wholeheartedly recommend this product however still caution use as it does contain a known photo toxic ingredient, Grapefruit essential oil (natural isn’t always better…) . I would like to see Dermalogica eventually omit this ingredient from the current formula.
I’d much rather pay less for Paula’s Choice and or The Ordinary who all make fantastic, budget friendly and effective and STABLE vitamin C rich formulas.

The DERMALOGICA Age Smart BioLumin-C Serum is a very light oil-textured serum. Dermalogica Age Smart BioLumin-C Serum contains several good antioxidants and emollients, such as vitamin c, chia seed, lactic acid, vitamin e, one peptide, and licorice root extract. What did disappoint me is that they have included grapefruit peel oil (which is about halfway down the ingredient list) and limonene (near the bottom of the list). Thankfully this only has a scent when you immediately apply this and it dissipates almost immediately. The Age Smart BioLumin-C Serum goes on very easily but it does leave a slightly sticky texture which I fixed by applying a moisturizer over the serum. I didn’t have any issues but if you are prone to breakouts I would be careful since this contains Carrageenan, which can be a culprit of acne and breakouts. Overall this serum is just okay, and for this price I want something to be amazing, but this was not it. There are so many vitamin C serums that deliver and for far less than this cost.
