The first week I used the Obagi Sun Shield Matte Broad Spectrum SPF 50 I absolutely loved it. You can’t even tell that you have it one because it applies so easily and absorbs quickly. This works well under makeup and over my normal serum and moisturizers. This really doesn’t have any scent or any white cast to it. I really loved the Obagi Sun Shield until after a couple of weeks I finally read the ingredient list. I was so sad to learn that they included the preservative Methylisothiazolinone in the formula.
Methylisothiazolinone (also called MIT for short) is a product that is not safe for use in cosmetics with the exception of products that are to be immediately rinsed off, like cleansers. And even in this instance the amount used must be very very low, I think I read it was 0.00015 parts per million. This is in products to be rinsed off, and most research states that is not recommended to be used in leave on skin care products in any amount. With MIT being such a skin sensitizer I am very glad I finally stopped to read the ingredient list before I continued using this, and I am also very glad that I didn’t notice any irritations during my use of this product. Moisturizing yet mattifying in the face, with no discernible scent. It doesn’t leave a white cast, sting my eyes, or make me break out. A very solid facial sunscreen.

I never used sunscreen before – I know, bad. But ever since I started using retin-A, I need some sunscreen because tretinoin and sun rays are not best friends. My mom bought this but doesn’t actually use it daily unless she’s on holiday, so this sunscreen became my mine. I like this stuff so far, no breakouts, no tanning and no other bad stuff – works fine just far. BUT, as a college student on budget, I would not repurchase this, since it’s hella expensive and I don’t know whether or not my mom would buy this again since she’s not even actually using it.

This is by far my favorite American sunscreen.
First, let me say that I hate sunscreens: the feel of diaper cream of my face, the look of Crisco, the chemical fragrance, the irritation, the breakouts *ugh*
I was looking into Obagi NuDerm for the treatment of melasma (the bane of my existance!) and kept coming across research that suggests that physical sunscreens are superior to chemical ones in the treatment of melasma because they deflect the heat of sunrays. Chemical sunscreen attract the UV rays and break them up in a chemical reaction. But that same reaction creates minute heating of the skin, which can exacerbate melasma.
The problem with most physical sunscreens is that they are usually Zinc based and they usually feel and look like thinned diaper rash cream — not pretty, not cosmetically elegant, heavy, greasy, suffocating.
This sunscreen on the other hand, is a physical/chem combo. It was created to protect the delicate skin of those undergoing the very agressive NuDerm treatment and help in preventing more melasma.
It is a white cream that feel light on the skin. Although I don’t have significant whitening when I am about NC 30; I can see a white-purplish cast when I am darker, but it is still very wearable under makeup.
It can be a little difficult to manage if you just rub it in. But if you apply it with big swiping motions and don’t overwork it, it will not ball up.
If you are familiar with the Obagi NuDerm program, you know that it is super aggressive and that it makes the skin super sensitive. While a lot of sunscreen can burn and sting, this sunscreen actually feels soothing on.
The first time I bought this sunscreen I wasn’t using the NuDerm program. But I was using retin-a and AHAs that left my skin sensitive.
Other sunscreen (I am looking at you Vichy) would burn badly, but this product was a like a welcomed relief.
The bad:
• The price. OMG why is this so expensive?!? Ok. I know why, because this is a “physician product” so they need to account for the commission being paid to the dermatologists that carry the line :/
• It is hard to find. You can find it on Amazon. But I do not recommend it because I have seen countless occurrences of counterfeit Obagi products being sold on Amazon (including the SS)
And because Amazon makes it relatively easy for people to post fake positive reviews and carries merchandize from thousands of different vendors; it is super hard to make sure that you are getting a legitimate, fresh product.

Bottom line: I have bought this nearly $50 sunscreen twice. Which means a lot coming from me. It is gentle, effective, not greasy and soothing.
I am still looking for something similar (Zinc based) that’s cheaper and water resistant. In the meantime, I think I will continue to keep this in my sunscreen rotation.

I believe I’m on my fifth bottle of this and began using it a little over two years ago. It is my favorite facial sunscreen. I love the creamy texture because it sinks right into my skin and doesn’t leave any white residue although it has a high amount of zinc oxide (10.5%). I also love the matte texture. I am acne prone and it has never caused me any irritation.
I am looking for other sunscreen options because I’m reading Anticancer and No More Dirty Looks right now and they say some of the chemicals in this sunscreen and many others have been linked to cancer. I’m looking for a sunscreen without oxtinoxate. If you have any suggestions, let me know!

This is the only sunscreen tht i use and love. Its unlike other sunscreen tht grosses you out after applying it. It has a matte finish. Its very light for a sunscreen and plus has zinc that helps you out with any breakout. This is the best so far and i jus cant live without it

Right I’m editing this review.. I gave it 1 lippie but having scoured the earth for a decent mineral sunblock without success, perhaps I’ve been a little harsh on this one.
It does have a slight white cast but this does seem to disappear. Sun protection is really excellent and it’s non irritating (perfect for after peel), but it does break me out a bit (and I never break out).
If you have oily/combination skin and want something really matt this is going to be perfect. I don’t like the matt finish personally – I’d prefer something dewy.
My main issue with this is that make up does not seem to go on well over it. Well mineral make up does not! It looks like it’s been applied with a trowel. I feel so bad about how I look after putting make up on I wish I never bothered
It’s EYE WATERINGLY-EXPENSIVE! I think Obagi’s products are all over-priced – particularly the very ordinary ones like cleanser and toner – and am resentful about handing so much money over to this company.
It has lasted less than 2 months!
No I will not be repurchasing..

For acne prone, combo skin this works very well in protecting and mattifying..I used it under makeup and looked just perfect..It might be a bit drying in winter but using it on top of vitamin c serum makes it better..So far my skin loves this!

This is a review for the Obagi matte SPF 50. It is truly a matte sunscreen. I have oily skin and lots of freckles. I have used tons of sunscreen but most of them have been too greasy. I love this sunscreen because it is not greasy and feels like you don’t have anything on but at the same time has a high SPF. I can’t comment much on the price because I’m not sure what this normally sells for but I bought it on a whim on ebay for $20 which is more than drugstore sunscreens but less than high end ones and is a pretty big bottle. I love it and will continue to purchase even if I had to pay more because it’s a big bottle that will probably last me a long time.
