I really wanted to like this product, but I don’t. At all. I’ve been trying to use more natural products and have been on the hunt for a “safe” sunscreen- one that has more natural ingredients for everyday use, but that’s also reef-safe. This product is extremely thick, sticky, it never absorbs and remains tacky until it wears off or you wash it off. Plus, my clothes stuck to it, which just feels gross. I also realize this stuff isn’t intended for the face either, but I tried it just because. Don’t do it, especially if you intend on wearing any makeup. I can’t comment on how effective this stuff is at sun protection, because I couldn’t get past the sticky texture and washed it off within an hour of application. It’s like smearing yourself with diaper rash ointment (which I’ve never done, but I imagine it’s similar). I won’t repurchase. It’s not Green Beaver’s fault- my expectations have been completely ruined by mainstream beauty and their seductively toxic product textures 🙁

What is going on here? Negative reviews for a product this great ??
OK, I understand the unpleasant experiences, but this is not a sunscreen for your face. At least I would NEVER put it on my face. There is already more than enough oil on there! It is a pure mineral sunscreen with great UVA protection from the 21% zinc oxide content. The oil base that prevents the white sheen that most mineral sunscreens have. So much oil is awful on my face, but so very welcome on my hands. 😉
It comes out as a thick oily paste. I put on some and rub my hands back to back. I let it sit for a bit, then go on to spread two full pumps of my beloved Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion all over my hands. They works so well! I get protection and extra moisture from the Green Beaver, plus long lasting matte hydration at which Aveeno is the best. Because the Skin Relief lotion adheres well to the skin, it also prevents the SPF from rubbing off during the day. The oiliness and zinc of the sunscreen also result in a slightly dewy finish which balances out the dewiness on my face.
I know it is not recommended to apply lotion on top of sunscreen but it all boils down to not applying less than the recommended amount and ensuring that the sunscreen in uniformly distributed. Zinc and Titanium Oxide are less fussy as well.
Great sunscreen, for an even greater match!

NOTE: While this review is for the Green Beaver SPF 30 sunscreen, I have noticed that most health food store purely mineral sunscreens have oil based formulas that are very much alike. I think you could equally use any of them.

Wow. My first review on here, but I couldn’t keep quiet about this. So unbelievably greasy. It was uncomfortable, and I was nervous to put on clothes or sit on my furniture. Hair, dust, sand, dirt- Everything was sticking to me. I just threw the product out. *sadface*

Weird stuff… It does not leave any white cast, which is pretty amazing. But the greasiness. YUCK. I had to blot 3 or 4 times before noon. It did eventually give my skin a really nice dewy finish, but then it was strangely sticky the rest of the day. My hair was sticking to my face like it was covered in goopy lipgloss, but that dewy finish… Thought I could work with it for that midday glow, until I tried to take it off that night… 2 oil cleanses, then soap and water, and I could stil feel it hanging around. Woke up to clogged pores. Wanted to love it, (natural, mineral, GF, Canadian company…) just can’t. Returning tomorow.

EXTREMELY thick and greasy!! can’t believe this product is getting good ratings. I have to wash my hands like 3 times to get this stuff off after applying. it will probably stain clothes.

I *love* this stuff. With darker skin, physical sunscreens (which I need because of sensitivity to chemical sunscreen) always leave a whitish ashy finish. This does not. AT ALL! I cannot tell you how happy I am with the product. I’ve used it for two summers now and I keep re-buying. It’s definitely a bit greasy but I also have acne-prone skin and this does not break me out. Truth be told, I kinda like the sheen on my skin, it looks summery.
Anyway, it’s non-nano, which is important in the physical blocker. It’s transparent. It’s sufficiently broad spectrum (both excellent UVA blocking and good UVB). It’s expensive. A 90mL tube is $20, so used over your body it won’t last long, but it’s so fabulous, it’s definitely worth it to me.
FYI the Kids version and the regular version have the exact same ingredients, so it doesn’t matter which you buy.

I agree with the other reviews. This product is a good, but greasy natural sunscreen. A friend of mine who used it at the beach said she felt like she spread olive oil all over her body. Still, I love the ingredients and it protects effectively against the sun, so I will repurchase until I find a better all-natural sunscreen.

I just got this sunscreen when one of my favorite vegan stores posted this new product. Like everything else in their line, it’s organic and cruelty free with natural ingredients. This is very important to me, so I’ll sacrifice some appealing physical qualities if it means less animal suffering and minimizing chemicals regardless. Im impressed by the high zinc % and that there is no white cast. It it pretty greasy, however, but it absorbs well on drier skins. Because my biggest quest is for cosmetically elegant sunscreen that I can wear on my face, my review is based on that…and I have an oily t-zone. I’ve had worse, and unfortunately I have to accept that either it’s going to be shinier than I’d like or it’s going to have a dry white cast. If I expected perfection, I’d have to give two stars to every sunscreen on the market since it’s been impossible so far to find something with high zinc but cosmetically elegant. Once thing different about this is my entire face isn’t entirely shiny, it’s only the areas that Im prone to oiliness anyway so those areas are excentuated. I didn’t get that on my cheeks since they’re not really oily. The other I like (for what it is), is UV Natural. It’s not too white and absorbs well, but it’s sticky and not easy to apply. I can work with Green Beaver’s better. I let it sit for about 30 minutes, then rub it a bit more to minimize the shine. When I apply powder (my fave is still Christopher Drummond’s), my face really does look flawless and there’s absolutely no shine. There isn’t the film I get with UV natural. If already have an oily T zone, so it may be better for those with drier skin. I still have to give it 4 stars, because it’s one of the best so far, for what I’m looking for, and it doesn’t give me breakouts. Now if they could somehow make it less greasy, like UV Naturals, I could give it a 4.5 but maybe it’s one of those things….Im asking for something that could never be possible. For now, all I have to do is apply powder after a little wait, rather than bare faced, and it’s exactly what I’m looking for in a sunscreen. Too bad I can’t get it in the US (looks like it can’t even be sent here?), but Vancouver isn’t that far and there are a ton of stores with green beaver products.
