I’m so disappointed in this and I can’t fathom why Clinique would release this product. I only use mineral sunscreen on my face due to my sensitive rosacea skin. No matter how I tried — use less, blend better, etc…– I could not make this sunscreen work. Your face will be white. And I’m NC15 pale. Even with foundation and a full face of make up over it, the white will not dissipate. If Clinique could reformulate this to eliminate the white, I would buy it. For now, I’m mixing the Clinique Pep Start Mineral SPF 50, which is too dark on me, with Paula’s Choice Mineral SPF 30 in hopes of getting maybe SPF 40 protection. I live in a sunny climate so excellent sun protection is a must. This does spread nicely and it feels comfortable. And kudos to Clinique for the all mineral SPF 50. Now if they could just eliminate the white out effect.
Edit: I upgraded my review after discovering I can blend this with Clinique Pep Start Mineral SPF 50 which reduces the white effects of this sunscreen and lightens the too dark color of Pep Start.

I’ve finished 2 bottles of this, both purchased within the last year. I thought this product worked pretty well and it applied nicely. I have golden olive skin (NC30) and almost always have a problem with white cast from mineral sunscreens. This one did lighten my skin tone a bit, but it didn’t leave an obvious cast, and it was easy to blend in. I was able to wear it without foundation over it, and my face still looked natural.
The two-star rating is for its pore-clogging effects. Although I didn’t experience any inflammatory acne breakouts, I did end every day with clogged-up pores on my nose. That is a deal-breaker for me. I know that this product was the culprit because I’ve since replaced it with another product (from Josie Maran) that yielded different results.
Another downside is that this product leaves my skin very shiny. That would not be a deal-breaker, but it does require me to use powder and to check and retouch throughout the day, more so than I normally would.
I won’t repurchase.

The picture is the SPF 30 version but this is a review for the SPF 50…
I have to say this is probably the worst sunscreen I’ve ever tried. Not that it irritated my face, as it did not for the few times I tried it, but it is so WHITE that it is impossible to use. I am a fair and pink NW15-NW18 and this was even too white for me.
I tried using before foundation and it was a disaster. Too white to even use a bronzer to try and add a bit of color. The best bet was to mix with a few drops of my Cover FX drops, or I suppose Clinique’s new BIY drops would work too to give it some color, but even mixed with some color drops, this stuff is way too thick and it would be impossible to get even remotely any kind if natural look. This sunscreen is like spreading a thinned out diaper ointment or the old surfer’s sunscreen they used to put on their noses on your face. It is impossible to use as a daily sunscreen and unless you want to be a ghost, don’t use it at the beach either.
Clinique has some much better sunscreens, including the much superior men’s SPF 50 that has nothing in the formula that would stop a woman from using it. Give this one a miss.

I live on an island and I have malasma therefore application of sunscreen is a must for me. I have tried many (derma -E, Avene, Apivita, la Rosey Posay, Daylong Actinica, Korres, Caudalie and the list goes on forever…) and I have to say this is one of the worst if not the worst of all. In terms of protection it is fine, 50 SPF is high enough for keeping my melasma from getting worse, but the application is a nightmare and there is no way you can’t make it work. It does not spread easily, it leaves an awful white cast, and every foundation/color cream on top of it looks bad. When it dries it sets in every line as it seems it is never absorbed. I used with CD star foundation and NUXE did cream in light on top and makes my face masky and ghostly. I am fair with neutral undertones but this thing makes my face pasty even when used light handed.

I ordered two mineral sunscreens the same day, one for my best friend and one for me. This one and Antioxidant Natural Sunscreen SPF 30 by Derma E. We tried both products.
This one is seriously expensive for its size, if it was cheaper I would give 3 stars. I didn’t notice how small it was as there is no size information on Clinique’s website, it was a pretty unpleasant surprise when it arrived home. $26 for only 30ml ! (even more actually as there is also tax on top of it in my country) Derma E’s sunscreen was $19,75 for 56ml. Both sunscreens are oil-free, fragrance-free, and paraben-free which is great. Derma E leaves more white cast than Clinique’s as the Derma E one is just zinc oxide while Clinique’s has mainly titanium dioxide but also zinc oxide. White cast is not a problem for me as I’m already fair-skinned anyway. Clinique’s is fluid, Derma E’s is creamy in texture.
Zinc oxide is told to be better at protecting from the sun, so Derma E gets a +1 with that. Derma E is also vegan and cruelty-free as a brand, another +2. Clinique has silica in the ingredients which is an ingredient I try to avoid as much as possible, Derma E doesn’t have it. While Clinique’s has more ingredients in number I think Derma E’s ingredients like Vitamin C and Green Tea Leaf Extract could be more beneficial for the skin. It does not hydrate my combination skin unfortunately, but I can work around it by first putting on a regular moisturizer or a little rose hip oil, than applying the sunscreen on top of it. Neither product caused any irritation for me. Clinique’s packaging is prettier in my opinion.
I liked Derma E’s mineral sunscreen much better in the end. My friend’s skin is on the dry side and she picked Clinique out of the two. She has pityriasis rosea that gets worse in summer. So far this sunscreen did not cause any irritation but she started to use it just this week and the weather reached 30’C degrees only today, so we will see how it goes when it gets hotter. Will update my review if anything happens.
EDIT: I wrote the below review in 2016 and gave two stars. I came across to this again on Clinique’s online store and apparently they have lowered the price since 2016. There was also an additional discount which made the price very reasonable. Also I don’t know if they changed the formula a little but this time I found it worked better on my skin. Adding two more lippies.
