Awful, just awful. Most of the negative reviews prior to mine pretty much say it all, but here’s my 2 cents anyway. I have shoulder length thick 3b/3c hair, the exact “thick and curly” hair they say this is made for. Well, after using this and blow drying I ended up with hair that looked stringy, wet, and flat. It felt like my hair never completely dried, all day long it still felt half wet…like a damp sponge. The worst was the sticky, gooey film this left on my hair. I mean it was BAD. If I touched my hair I had to wash my hands because the sticky mess ended up on my skin.
I am 49 years old and have tried what seems like zillions of products on my hair and this might be the worst product I’ve ever used.
*****UPDATE- After reading some of the positive reviews, many of which say to use only a very small amount of the product, I tried this again. First time I used it I looked at the label (obviously not very closely) and I thought it said “apply generously”, as most styling products I use do. Upon closer inspection it says “apply SPARINGLY”. The first ingredient is glycerin. That explains why when I first used it, and applied the same amount I would normally use for any gel or cream I ended up with sticky, gross, damp hair for the rest of the day.
I’ve now been using this differently and a lot more pleased with the results. I first apply Ecoco Curl’N Styling Cocktail as my base then scrunch my curls. Then I take a SMALL amount, about a dime-size glob, of the Curling Souffle and rub my hands together so I end up with a very,very light coating, which I then scrunch through my curls. I do this once on each side of my head and once for the back. The key is to make sure you scrunch it as lightly and evenly through the hair as possible. If I do it right this product really does add just enough moisture and hydration to make my curls both curlier and shinier, without the terrible results I described when using too much. The first ingredient in this is glycerin, which explains both good and bad results based on the amount used.
Took a little practice to figure out the right amount to use, but now I’m much happier with the product. Less is more when it comes to this stuff. Updating my rating to 3 stars.

This stuff is just plain gross! It left my hair looking and feeling super yucky and greasy till it was unbelievable. I immediately washed this horrible stuff out of my hair and brought the 2 jars that I had bought of it back to Walgreens for a refund.
Never in my life would I recommend this product to anyone, period.
One of my favorite the company is now defunct. Most should go here but this was my only purchase and I can’t imagine ever having to buy another that didn’t come with the package.
Meh sorry, but this should be included in all sales.

I bought these because of the rave reviews on youtube, even though it says that it is for THICK, curly hair… I have thin, fine and loose curly hair and on MY hair this is not THAT great. But that’s what I get for buying even though it’s not meant for my type of hair… The first time I tried it I applied on its own all over my hair and it was very, very, very oily/greasy feeling, not something that works on my hair. BUT the second time I tried it, I used it as a complementary styling product alongside my trusted DIY flaxseed gel, and applied a lot less than the first time and it worked better. Recently, whenever I use it I apply it mostly on my ends and use the tiniest, tiniest bit and it gives moisture to those few ends that need it. The packaging I don’t really enjoy because the product has a very weird globby/oily consistency and it’s quite hard to get a small amount because of that. The smell is not bad, it’s quite fresh with a hint of coconut-y scent. Even though this is not a product I would buy again, I can’t say it’s bad, because it does prevent frizz moisturizes and gives shine, like it says it would, but it’s just too much moisture for my hair. Maybe if your hair is extremely dry and coarse, this would work better.

My sister had introduced this to me. It smells amazing!! My hair is naturally wavy (if I dont straighten it). However, even when I do I still use a tiny bit on my ends because it just makes my hair smell and feel good. A little goes a long way so this stuff will last me a pretty long time. Ive also used this on my extensions and it helps keep them beautiful and healthy as well.

This is my favorite gel to use, I don’t use any other gel in my hair. I have very thick, long, curly, and frizzy hair. I don’t mind a little frizz, but anyways this product smells super good, it reminds me of a tropical island. The only thing I don’t like about this is that it use to be gel and gooey, like the type of gel you usually can picture in your head. Now when you open it, it’s like solid looking but it still jiggles so you can still use it, but the last time I bought this it came out all chunky like and left gel chunks in my hair. I thought buying it like that would be a one time thing and maybe I just got a messed up one but I recently bought another one and it’s still in that solid like form! I have to mix it with my hands to make it gel and it still feels like little gel chunks are in it!

This is in my rotation of curl products, but it’s not something I reach for often.
It enhances and defines waves, but it leaves my thick, past-the-shoulders hair with that wet look. If I use too much it can easily become clumpy and greasy-looking.
The biggest problem I have with this is the texture of the gel: It feels like there are little granules in it, and it has a sticky, heavy quality to it.
The tub packaging is annoying, it’s hard to pick up the right amount of product, and dipping your fingers into the tub just magnifies the weird texture of the gel.
I have recently discovered that when combined with the curl enhancing smoothie from the same line (which does absolutely nothing on it’s own), the wet look is diminished. I emulsify equal parts of each between my palms and coat my hair in large sections.
The tub lasts forever as it needs to be used sparingly.

This is a good gel to use with the rest of the Shea Moisture line of products. I usually use this product on the ends only because it has a heavier feel and helps hold the curls in place.

I have 2b curls, thick, frizzy, very dry.
I put the souffle evenly on my wet clean hair and let air dry. It brought out curls with not much frizz. However, if I touch the hair, it feels slightly crunchy/tacky/sticky.
It is not good if you have a date and he might touch your hair. I would never let a guy run his fingers through my hair with this product in it! Also, I wore a sundress and my hair was against my skin and the product left a light residue on my back.
I’ll use up the souffle but I won’t repurchase. Still on the lookout for that HG curl finishing cream.
I use the smoothie and like it much better for my curls. Can’t stand the way that any of the shea moisture products smell. Way too overpowering.

I agree with the reviewer below, this felt funny – kinda oily, kinda sticky.
I have very fine 2a/2b hair, but a lot of it, and I adore Shea Moisture products, but this one seems to be the exception.
I applied a small amount to freshly washed hair, scrunched it and then let air dry, which took forever! Afterwards, though my curls were defined and shiny, they were also very stiff and felt weird and sticky to the touch.
Second day was worse as my hair seemed to clump together in a matted mess and refused to be combed through. Had to wash it using a clarifying shampoo, which I normally hate doing as I colour my hair, but it was the only way I could get this stuff out of my hair.
Do not recommend.

I was expecting this to be more like a gel, ya know you’d apply it and it would eventually dry. But it has an odd sticky and oily feel that doesn’t seem to go away. I mean it dried but when you touch it you get a sticky oily residue on your fingers. It does make your hair shiny though 🙂 so I don’t recommend this.
