I have fine, very curly, permed hair. I got this gel on a recommendation from r/curlyhair. After about 2 months of using it I finally dumped it and let me tell you, I’m glad I did. No matter what I did with my hair, it would always be frizzy almost immediately. Also, by the second day my curls were a frizzy, flat, undefined mess. Finally after some experimentation I decided that the gel had to be the issue. I randomly picked up giovanni la hold gel from Whole Foods to try out something different and let me tell you, my curls are fantastic. I’m at the end of the 3rd day since washing my hair and I still have great definition and little frizz. I really would not recommend LA Looks because besides the price, it’s not a great product.

Hello old friend from the 80’s … I would NEVER have guessed I would be wearing my hair curly AND using the gel that use to keep my bangs up (UP UP!) for that classic 80’s look. I use this in combination with my curl cream — and love the effects. But what really makes this all work together … is my beloved denman brush. That – that’s has been the true game changer and this gel keeps it all locked in and frizz free for days. AWESOME!

I tried to make this gel work for my fine, 3a/b curly hair. It is very strong hold and did keep my hair in place when I was in Florida during the summertime…it was extremely humid and my hair was so frizzy and flyaway.
There were so many positive raves about it over on hair board and I tried it in soaking wet hair, with various curl creams, and just applied to damp hair. Plus it’s CHEAP. But, I couldn’t get it to work.
It’s very thick and sticky, and just too strong of a hold for me….it would have a very wet look/cast when dry and I could not scrunch it out, as much as I tried. By the time I did get it scrunched out (when I did), there wouldn’t be any hold left and my hair was very flyaway.
I also don’t care for the packaging; once it’s about halfway gone, I have to turn it upside down otherwise it takes forever to get the product out. It’s also really slippery if my hands are wet and I’ve dropped it often. I won’t purchase again.

I should title this review ‘how I found out that my hair is not secretly curly’. The underside of my hair from the ears down is loose waves in cool weather and very tight waves when it is humid. But the canopy is a dry, frizzy, stick-straight puffball nightmare. I read about people with this straight but frizzy hair type who discovered that their hair was naturally curly, so thought I would try this. It wasn’t for me, but I still think it is a good product.
I scrunched the gel into my sopping wet hair, then left it pinned up to dry. It was hard to keep hands off of it, and it took FOREVER to dry. So I am letting this hard helmet form onto my hair over many hours while trying not to touch it. It felt like a lot more work than I was used to doing on a wash day.
When my hair finally dried, it was hard and crusty. I began to scrunch. The lower portion had somewhat defined waves, but I was surprised to see that the top instantly straightened the slight bit of wave that it had and became huge. My hair had formed a weird shape overall.
My hair felt coated and dirty even though I just washed it, and I looked like something exploded in my face. Day 2 hair was a dry, puffy nightmare. On a good note, I was able to get the most gorgeous high bun i have ever had due to the insane amount of volume that I had (and didn’t want). But, this was the only thing I could do with my hair in that state.
I washed it a couple of days later and tried it again, plopped, and I thought I did a better job of not touching my hair, but the result was the same. I also noticed that I had a lot of bumps forming on my face along my hairline. I do tend to break out with some hair products, and it seems that this is one of them.
Im not heartbroken over it, because the whole ‘scrunch, plop, don’t touch, scrunch’ etc thing was more fuss than I was hoping to deal with anyway.
When it comes to controlling my frizz, I decided that I am a cream/oil person and not a gel person. I really need that volume reduction that comes from being weighed down with grease.
I am not giving this a terrible rating because I saw with the underside of my hair that this could have potential for the right hair types. I did try some on my son, who has ear-level hair with no moisture of frizz issues. It gave him amazing 90’s heartthrob-esque hair and I am sure the ladies were chasing him around school all day ;). So yeah, this stuff is definitely good – just not for my super dry and frizzy hair that is not secretly curly.

I buy this at Dollar Tree but it lasts forever making it an an awesome deal! I can make 80s spiral perm zig zags w this which I’ve got natural curls so that’s kind of what I’m stuck with I’m unless flat ironing it. It’s shortish now (just past shoulders) but I can avoid that A line frizz, smells good to me! Smell dissipates fast. It’s a great DS gem!!!!! I will keep buying this & Eco styler gel til they quit making it.

I have very fine hair that is difficult to style. Sometimes it’ll look good for an hour or two. Sometimes not even that long. This product is very inexpensive and does the trick. I can even do my hair before bed, and it’ll look good the next morning.
A lot of us assume that cheap costing products are– cheap. And the expensive ones work the best. In this situation, that’s not the case.
I read good reviews on here about it, so I looked for it at cvs and Walgreens but neither store carried it. I bought DEP thinking it was similar, but I didn’t like it. Finally I found LA Looks at Rite Aid pushed all the way in the back.
It is a gel, so if your hair gets wet, it will obviously become sticky.
For the price and quality, you can’t beat it!

LA Looks is the brand people turn to when they realize gel is gel, it’s never going to be fancy, and it doesn’t have to cost more than a few dollars to get the job done.
Every so often I will fall into a nostalgic mood and try to wear my hair naturally curly on a consistent basis. Usually when I’m wearing it curly it means I didn’t have time to style it, and I throw it in a bun or ponytail, because my hair is usually somewhat dry and frizzy, and the curls are poorly defined. If I am intentionally wearing it curly, I will include this gel in my after-shower routine and I find that it makes my hair manageable and far less frizzy.
Because you can’t expect miracles from hair products, especially ones that cost $3, I don’t hold it against this gel that my hair doesn’t look like I just had it professionally curled and volumized. Years of heat styling and other missteps means I probably won’t be totally satisfied with my natural curls regardless of what products I am using, but this gel means I can leave home without feeling like a frizz factory.
The smell is quite masculine but it dries without persisting. I find this gel is easy to wear without your hair getting crunchy, unless you apply it after it dries. It does have some proteins in it, which can leave hair feeling dry so have a leave-in in place before use.
I also use this when a style requires I slick back my hair (i.e. A bun or ponytail) because it tames flyaways. It is water-soluble, meaning it won’t create buildup on your hair if you’re cowashing instead of shampooing. I think this makes it very appealing to the curly haired crowd, and also to me because I have low porosity hair that is prone to buildup.

This gel is a staple for me!!! My hair is color treated, naturally spiral curly hair 3b mixed with a few 3a & 3c’s.
This doesn’t weight my hair down or make it feel crunchy or sticky but it does deliver great hold and zero frizz!!! I use this after I apply this after my leave in and curl cream,I just scrunch it through and air dry or diffuse and get nice defined frizz free curls!!

I’m liking this more on revisit, perhaps because my hair has been dry and flyaway lately. Nothing amazing but does help reduce frizz and add volume / grip. I used this on 75% dry hair, along with joico (3:1 ratio), no other product and dried with a diffuser. i still needed and iron for the damaged straight bits on top but def. an improvement.
Prev review:
pros
– definately enhances curl (see: glycerin)
– not sticky
– adds volume
cons
– i don’t like the curl pattern it brings out (zigzag poodle curls– think 80s hair metal)
– hair feels coated/stringy
– does not control frizz well
– despite the name, only so-so hold
– longering scent reminds me of men’s cologne or after shave
tried: on wet hair and damp hair (2 qaurter size dollops, plunked/scrunched)

My hair is fine yet I’ve got a lot of it, very dry and curly. It was curly as a young child and I’m assuming due to hormones (I’m mid 40’s), that’s why its very curly again. My favorite in this brand is the light blue one made for curls, its very good but so hard to find. My DF uses this so I’ve tried it a few times. It also enhances curl and is not sticky nor crunchy/hard, when dried. Its a good gel in that respect but I will go back to the curl formulation when I locate some(or use the “wet look) version as it leaves my hair shinier. Good product but since I like others in the line better, I won’t re-purchase this one.
