The scent is decent, it has a slight medicated/sulfur scent but it’s not too bad especially compared to others. The scent does linger in the hair slightly but again it is not as strong as other brands I have tried.
This version contains 1% selenium sulfide and aloe.
I have tried other brands with salicylic acid which helped remove flakes but seemed to irritate my scalp more and made my scalp more greasy and itchy over time. Pyrithione Zinc 1% in all brands does absolutely nothing for my scalp but for some reason made it itchier than before I used it. Tar was okay but the smell was horrendous and never gave great results either. Each is geared more towards specific issues so do your research to see which may work better for you. Sometimes it takes a combo of two to treat the issue. I will only purchase this as needed.
NOTE: If that does not work I have had great results with 1% hydrocortisone anti-itch cream. I add about 1 1/2-2 tsp to a travel size spray bottle with warm water (to help dissolve) shake well to combine and shake before each use. Spray directly onto scalp NOT hair then use fingers to help rub into scalp. No more flakey patches! Leaves no residue on my hair at all. I apply after getting out of the shower before drying my hair and also any time I notice itching. You can also get cortisone cream and shampoos from a dermatologist.

Oh my gosh. This shampoo is a game changer. I am embarrassed to admit that I have had to use Head and Shoulders for my entire adult life – from as long as I can temper maybe starting at age 14? All the way to age 33 (now) because if I didn’t, my scalp would itch like crazy. I was desperate to use a normal, moisturizing high end shampoo for my coarse and dry hair- but never could.. Until this! If you look at my reviews, I use mostly high end products but this shampoo, literally after using it TWICE got rid of my itchy scalp! It almost seemed too good to be true! I never knew that Selsun Blue used a different active ingredient than Head and Shoulders. Selsun blues active ingredient is Selenium sulfide (1%) and for whatever reason, THIS cured my itchy scalp and dandruff and now I have been shampooing my hair with high end , moisturizing shampoos with no itch! So I would highly recommend trying selsun blue if you have tried H & S with no luck. I can’t believe two washes cured years of itchy scalp. I will never go back to H and S.

Selsun Blue “Salon” IS safe for color treated hair. Scalp feels better, hair color intact-I’m pleased – no color degradation after two applications. Not available locally ordered from drugstore.com-arrived within two days. Make sure you use “SALON” on color treated hair or else you’ll have a color correction to do.

I am not writing this review for myself but rather for my boyfriend. I tried to convince him to use the same shampoos as me for the longest time (shower bottle space problem), but he claims he would not be able to survive without this shampoo, and nothing beats it.
It does make his thick hair soft, with no dandruff and straightens it a little. The smell is debatable though.
Overall, I don’t think he’ll ever change shampoos, which is a good sign of an excellent product.

My hair is thinning a bit, but dandruff is the bigger issue. I decided I want a shampoo that cleans really well so I can shampoo once a week and thus not contribute to my thinning hair. This does the trick well, cleans my hair really good and conditions it well too. I only have to wash my hair every Thursday with this shampoo and I have no flakes whatsoever. I’d like to eventually try the Selsun Naturals (the clear shampoo) and the scalp scrub, but for now this shampoo is great!

I love this! Head and shoulders wouldn’t do anything for my scalp but make the flaking worse. It got to the point where it looked like snow flakes and was hard to cover up (gross, I know). I decided to look elsewhere and use this. It lathers quite nicely, however, I would only use it for my scalp and not the rest of my hair as I feel that may be drying for my color-treated hair. I use this 1-2 times a week. It started working from the first time I used it and love it to death. First I put this on my scalp and rub it in well. Then I leave it for a few minutes and rise. Then I shampoo with my Kirkland sulfate free shampoo, then conditioner. My hair is beautiful now! The best part? DANDRUFF FREE!

I wouldn’t say it is anymore moisturizing than the one for Itchy Dry Scalp.
