I’ve had this experience before a couple of times with shampoo. Last time was with a popular shampoo that contains argan oil, from the photos online, I think it was OGX.
The feeling I got with that and Vanicream was that the shampoo just sat on top of my very fine hair as it made a tangled mess out of it. It’s as if it doesn’t have the ingredients that allow it to sink in. Very bizarre. Left it tangled, dry and impossible to comb through even after conditioner. A rat’s nest. I have ye old shelf full of products for fine, color-treated hair and this one just joined them.
Back to Nioxin even tho it’s a cheap knock-off of the old Nioxin.

One of the only products on the market that avoids the most common allergens in shampoos. Other self-proclaimed “hypoallergenic” shampoos typically only exclude fragrance from their ingredients, but Free & Clear excludes all the most common allergens. It’s also nice that they do not claim to be hypoallergenic in spite of their dedication to making a product that will be usable by those with allergies, because no product can be truly hypoallergenic.
Although sulfate-free, this shampoo is more like a regular shampoo, but with much gentler cleansing agents than sulfates. It is not like the heavy, conditioning shampoos that are typically marketed to those with dry hair. It has a short ingredients list and includes glycerin and panthenol for hair health. Because of the gentle cleansing agents, it does not lather up as much as regular shampoos, and I do find I need to use a bit more of the product to fully cleanse my scalp, but it is so worth it to finally have a shampoo I am not allergic to and is gentle on my hair.
I really appreciate that there are still companies out there truly dedicated to making products that are least likely to cause allergic reactions – I tried five different shampoos all claiming to be hypoallergenic before Free & Clear, eventually learning that each contained some of the most common allergens in shampoos anyway.
Free & Clear has also been better for my scalp health than other regular shampoos, and leaves my hair feeling softer and cleaner, too.

OMG, this shampoo created a frizz fest in my hair. I have straight, medium-coarse, heavy type hair with a slight wave. My hair doesn’t lend itself to much frizzing, but this shampoo created the type of frizz where the little hairs were all standing up straight like they were electrified. To be honest, I get much better results with Seventh Generation free/clear liquid dish soap used as shampoo, which I tried in desperation when I wanted a fragrance free, essential oil free shampoo. Then I discovered the Vanicream Free and Clear products and thought the shampoo would be a better option, but this shampoo was beyond awful for the frizz it caused, although it is mild and non-irritating.
I do like the conditioner that goes with this product and also use the gel mixed with my hair oil mix for extra conditioning after towel-drying. Between the 3 products – Seventh Generation free/clear used as shampoo, Vanicream’s Free and Clear conditioner rinsed only halfway out, and the Free and Clear gel mixed with my oils, I’m getting pretty good results – similar to the products I used before going totally fragrance free.
I may look into DHS hair products and the Wella Calm line, but I’ll have to order online. Wish I could try some of the health food store options that people love, but I’m sensitive to botanicals/essential oils as well as fragrance.

I have celiac disease and respiratory issues, and it’s very difficult to find products that are not only gluten-free, but also not heavily scented. I was delighted to stumble across this line (made by the company that makes Vanicream) at my local Walgreens. It’s a very basic shampoo–clear, somewhat thin, and with a somewhat silky feel–but very effective. It lathers well, cleans thoroughly, rinses out easily, and leaves my scalp feeling good and my hair with plenty of body. There’s no masking scent, but I don’t notice any scent when I use it or afterward. I can’t tell you how delighted I am to have a locally accessible, gluten-and fragrance-free, cosmetically elegant, high-quality line of hair products (there’s also a conditioner, gel, two types of hair spray, and a liquid soap) available after having to have to order just shampoo and conditioner at fairly high prices, and with stiff shipping charges as well. This line is also available online through several outlets, and sometimes at lower prices. I will keep buying this as long as they make it (and pray that they don’t discontinue it, as Jason did their gluten-free shampoo).

Turned my limp hair voluminous, and I was able to go 4 days without washing without my hair looking greasy!
I switched to this shampoo when I found out I was allergic to the brand I was previously using (Verb). At first, I was unimpressed by the way it didn’t lather like my other shampoos did (I now know that is a common side effect of most sulfate/paraben/etc.etc.-free shampoos), but was very impressed with how much more voluminous it made my usually limp, coarse hair. I was even able to go 4 days after washing with Clear and Free Shampoo and Conditioner and blow drying.

I didn’t like this so much as a shampoo: it was drying and also hard to rinse out–I found myself having to get back in the shower after I *thought* I was done to re-rinse my hair.
What it excels at is as a face and body wash. No breakouts for me, and I love the simplicity and lack of fragrance. I’ll repurchase it as that and stick with Acure and Giovanni for shampoo.
Edited 2016 to add: I’ve found a simple cleanser that’s half the price and works as a shampoo (I probably wouldn’t use it every day, but traveling or occasionally it’s perfect) called All Terrain Wonder Wash.

After using Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and conditioner and having a reaction to it I searched on the internet to find a mild shampoo that did not contain many of the known allergens and I stumbled upon Free and Clear. What was even better is that it was sold in my local Walgreens. I shampooed immediately when I got home and my itchy scalp has calmed down. It is not totally gone, but I would not expect it to be from the first use. The shampoo has no conditioning agents nor is it medicated, but it is mild and clear in color. It is a little thin but a little goes a long way. The matching conditioner is needed or else your hair will feel a bit stripped. After drying my hair, it feels really light and looks healthier than many of the salon brands I have tried. I would recommend this shampoo to anyone that has a reaction to many of the mainstream shampoos.

This did nothing but make my hairline bumps worse and dry out my hair but what did work was Abba Gentle Shampoo. BEST SHAMPOO FOR SENSITIVE SKIN…trust me I would know. I have tried all the other free and gentle shampoos out there. I was getting little bumps from all shampoos and this was the only one that I can use. The light scent I barely notice and it doesn’t dry out my hair or leave it flat. It makes my hair so soft. REMEMBER there are NO SULFATES so it can take a little bit for your hair to get used to no sulfates! I have thick hair that I blowout and I feel this shampoo gives it very nice shine and bounce. The best way to get it to suds up since it doesn’t have sulfates is to do your scalp with a quarter size amount and then do it again! MY HG SHAMPOO! So glad the search is over for one that doesn’t irratate my skin, head or wreck my hair! I had to write this because I wished someone would tell me what worked for them.

i was desperate to get me a new shampoo & conditioner at our local walgreens being i was bored with my current one,..i was thinking of fekkai, but they didnt have my favorite shea butter shampoo & conditioner..so i seen this free and clear shampoo & conditioner…i hate dandruff shampoos and conditioners being they dry out my color treated hair..and also being Yes my skin is sensitive and being my hair has been thru heavy coloring’s upon reading this bottle it says safe for color treated hair and its sulfate free..well…out of curiosity i had to buy it at $11.00 per bottle here at kaneohe Walgreens in hawaii, Im glad i got it!! my hair didnt feel dry,..it moisturized my hair with No oily heavy afterfeel…plus my hair was super manageable the next day without reshampooing and conditioning again…a big THUMBS UP TO Free & clear hair products…also i love there bar soap too!! you can fetch this at only at walgreens or online somewhere…but i recommend getting it at your local walgreens…and this shampoo & conditioner is great for any types of scalps and hair types…it worked for my Fussy hair!!!!

This is one of my all time favorite shampoos. It’s nearly impossible to find hair products for sensitive skin, especially shampoos and conditioners, which always seem to be laden with perfumes. Since I’ve been using this, I have fewer rashes where the shampoo would drip down my face and body. It’s also really good, simple, gentle shampoo. I only wish it were easier to find, but I can order it from dermstore.com, which offers free shipping. So, it’s not too much of a hassle. I would definately recommend this to anyone with a sensitive scalp and/or sensitive skin.
