So first off, I’ve struggled with accepting my thin, frizzy, kinky-wavy-curly hair all my life. Like plenty of people, I’m sure, I dismissed beautiful curls as something those with lots of time and patience could only have. I can’t say it’s this particular shampoo that’s been turning my temperamental locks into something I could be proud of, but it certainly has helped. Thankfully, I read a blog post from someone who had her technique down pat before tackling this shampoo as my first foray into sulfate-free shampoos. The trick is to have this shampoo, the Alaffia Curl Enhancing Leave In Conditioner, and also your usual (clarifying) shampoo/conditioner – just a bit. I’ve used Garnier Fructis all my life, so I stick with that.
My process for soft, perfect, natural curls is this: I brush my hair BEFORE showering ONLY. Never any other time. I use just enough of the Alaffia shampoo (for my shoulder length hair, about a quarter-sized amt) to rapidly scrub it across and wash my roots. (I have bangs, and reading reviews about how much build-up this leaves behind after a while, I decided to keep them solely on my garnier poo-conditioner. My bangs get greasy quickly enough without gunk all over it.) Then I follow up at the end of my shower with the Curl Enhancing Leave In Conditioner (not on my bangs). Once a week, I skip the Alaffia shampoo to wash my entire head with the Garnier Fructis/clarifying shampoo and conditioner to take care of the build-up issue, but always add the leave-in at the end of the shower. I lightly squeeze the water out of my hair and wrap it in the towel while I do my post-shower rituals. Then I lightly arrange my hair to its usual parts and blow dry just my bangs. I let the rest air dry before tying it up. For this reason, I try to shower in the morning or at least 2 hours before bedtime.
I’ve been on this process for a month now at the time of writing this review, and my hair has been AMAZING – beautiful, soft, bouncy curls as long as I don’t tie it up or go to sleep damp. I’ve never experienced hair like this in my life! I honestly feel that even if the true deal is the leave-in, this shampoo definitely compliments it well. Plus, if you use the correct amounts of each, they last forever. I haven’t even gotten a quarter of the way through each of my bottles yet. Though I’ve got 4 bottles of different things in the shower, they’ll last me at least half a year, I’m sure. Using a regular shampoo once a week takes care of the buildup issue. Plus, it smells really good! My friend’s cat loves sniffing my hair and tries to climb on my head now.
Oh, and I have reeeeally sensitive/oily/combo skin, and the conditioner doesn’t make me break out like crazy, so long as I’m careful not to let it run off in the shower onto my face. So plus one for that!

I purchased it at a health food store. It is gentle, does not cause color to fade. I use the shampoo along witht he leave-in conditioner and curl reviving tonic.

Purchased from WF on sale at $9. I would NOT recommend.
PROS:
Packed with water, slip and oils;
Hair feels soft during/after use;
Hair is clean;
Not stripping/harsh;
Silky and thick texture;
12oz. a lot of product for a ‘natural’ brand;
High lather;
Flip-top lid and contoured plastic bottle are very sturdy, easy to maneuver. The flip-top has a shallow lip and is not as nail-friendly as some others but holds the product in well.
CONS:
It leaves a LOT of residue on my scalp, with a fingernail test there’s a ton of crud I pick up identical to shea butter and I have to scrub/re-cleanse or clarify on top of my initial ‘shampoo’ to remove it, thereby stripping my strands. I have a lot left unfortunately, it was an impulse buy, never again. I’ll probably create a moisturizing scrub with it.
