12 hour oil free? Not even close.
8 hours? Hardly.
About 6 hours is more like it. After half a day I started to look oily, which is normal for me after only two hours, normally. I applied it as a base product with my fingertips, and with a beautyblender I followed up with foundation. I did not feel the need to finish with setting powder – however I might try this next time, for longevity. It’s very comfortable, non-drying and easy to work with.
Applied on top of foundation was horrid, it moved around and looked like a disaster! I don’t know why they even recommend trying that.
All in all, it looks amazing for a few hours, and even after 6 hours I still can go around without applying blotting powder, something which would be impossible normally (I shine like a lighthouse).
For someone as oily as me, it’s worth a shot, and I will repurchase in lack of better options (price is a bit steep for me).

I tend to flit between this product and Pore Delete as this once doesn’t disturb makeup as much. It does work and keeps me matte all day, but not a ‘fake matte’ where your skin looks very dull. This is a dewy, natural matte which I much prefer. A little goes a long way – I use less than a pea sized amount and dab very gently over my foundation. I have very oily skin and this works a treat, without drying me out.

I love this product! I was really disappointed at first, because I couldn’t get it to work. Maybe I was doing it wrong, or maybe it takes a few applications before my skin started accepting, I’m not sure.
I don’t wear a lot of makeup, but if I’m wearing foundation I take a very small amount (like 3/4 of a pea) and dab it onto my forehead. I used half that much for my nose and dab it in as well. If I’m not wearing foundation, then I dab it right over top of my moisturizer. It starts out looking wet, but it sinks in within seconds. It leaves my skin looking matte all day without (usually) making it feel dry. If my skin does start to feel tight, that’s usually a sign my skin needs some serious hydration.
The bottle also seems to last forever. I bought a back-up 2 months ago when I thought I was running low, and I still haven’t run out of the first bottle yet!

EDIT: 5/19/2017 – I tried this stuff as a primer under my BB cream and NYX foundation – NOPE. I was shiny by 9AM (applied at 7AM). For a $24 1oz primer mattifier, this stuff should keep me matte for more than ONE HOUR. I tried this product once before with just foundation, and it lasted a bit longer – but on my skin, this will never last 12 hours. Returning. Way too much money if it gives me the same shine as their $5 primer. Not worth the money.

My skin: clear of pimples (sensitive, acne-prone/cystic/redness), melasma, scars. Shiny oily skin that makes pores stand out big time from daily use of topical benzoyl peroxide gel after washing face. Top with daily moisturizer. Was looking for a product to help calm the shiny residue I get from BP gel. Do wear light foundation/BB cream M-F.

Preface: If you are deciding whether or not to purchase something from Deciem – do it. I think all their products can go either way and everyone’s skin experience is different. There are just so SO many factors that go into skincare and how a skin product is going to work for you. I definitely recommend doing what I did if you are on the fence and want to try some of these Deciem items: buy a bunch of ones that stand out to you or that aim to help with your skin issues – and buy them all to try them out. That is honestly the only way you are going to know if something works FOR YOU. I ended up buying $70 worth of Deciem items, just so I could give them all a fair try and figure out what worked best for me. I will also add that they have free shipping over $25 AND a great 1 year return policy. I think that’s the best way to figure out what may work for you, especially with reviews going back and forth saying something worked amazing for them – and then the next person having a flop.

Miracle. Period. If you have super oily skin, and have despaired of primers, oil controllers, wear-extenders, etc. etc. to keep your makeup on for longer than three hours, then this will change your life. I wear a pinky-fingernail-worth over my sunscreen and under my BB/foundation. It’s smooth, but not slippery. It enhances application of foundation rather than hindering it, even when you’re just using your fingers. It works for touch-ups beautifully, whether you’ve blotted or not. It will turn the sheerest, dewiest, hydrating-est foundation you own and iron-fortify it into Colorstay, basically. I’m already planning backups to keep at work. Bravo Deciem/Hylamide, please don’t ever stop making this. EDIT: I completely stand by my rave review for this product, but I have discovered to my sorrow that it clogs my pores. I do still use it on my nose but it is off-limits on my cheeks and chin (the most breakout-prone areas on my face). If you’re not too silicone-sensitive it is absolutely worth buying and trying. I regret not being able to use it anymore.

Ok, so after using this for a couple of days, I’m going to re-write my review and change my rating. This product is mainly for use without makeup, but I wear makeup most of the time so keep that in mind.
I usually apply this UNDER liquid foundation. Deciem suggests trying it over liquid foundation, but I found there was no difference in the performance, so my preference is under.
First thing, it has a citrus smell to it. It’s actually nice, not overpowering but there is a scent. It goes away as the formula dries down. The texture is a very cream like and it dries down matte, but not too matte and it leaves no visible color on my NC45-50 skin. My previous HG matte primer was the Becca Ever Matte. It dries down very dry and very matte. It can look like white powder, especially when you have an SPF under it.
This primer looks very nice under makeup. It fills in pores and gives you a dewy, skin like look. I didn’t realize it, but the BEM made the area I applied it look thicker and like a powder. It didn’t look bad, but it is just something I didn’t notice until I started wearing the Matte 12.
With that being said, if you have really oily skin, I wouldn’t recommend this. It already leaves you a bit dewy anyways, but I ended up having to blot earlier on in the day than I did with BEM. HOWEVER, this one leaves my skin and makeup in better condition. Once I blot, it still leaves a nice dewy finish and my makeup doesn’t sink into my pores. I owe that to it being more hydrating and not drying like other mattifying primers. If I could find a primer that looked like Hylamide on the skin, but worked as long as BEM, that would be awesome!
I haven’t used this on its own yet, but I am still on the hunt for a good mattifying primer!

I’m a guy with oily skin, and I’ve been on the hunt for mattifying primers that can keep the shine at bay throughout the day, and also offset some of the grease from my sunscreen.
I’ve tried many mattifying moisturisers and primers. Some of the prominent ones I’ve tried (that come to mind) are La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar Mat and Bioderma’s Sebium Pore refiner. While they mattify generally well, they don’t really have much staying power throughout the day, and I find myself getting greasy all over again about 5 or 6 hours later, tops. Furthermore, LRP’s Effaclar Mat contains a high amount of denatured alcohol, which is controversial as a ‘bad’ alcohol and definitely something I do not want in my moisturisers, and Bioderma’s product contains salicylic acid, which I’m not in favour of because I use a separate salicylic acid product at night and I’m not comfortable with the idea of using the ingredient twice a day for the fear of irritation. In short, none of them really satisfied my needs, even though their mattifying abilities were pretty decent.
This… this is different. I bought Hylamide’s Matte 12 in the ‘Finisher series’ on a whim. The company claims that it can mattify for up to 12 hours, and distinguishes their product from other mattifying primers by saying that it doesn’t dry the skin because it binds to oil as opposed to binding to our skin’s water content.
To say that I was shocked when I first used it was an understatement. I used a pea-sized amount and tapped it over my oily/problem areas after hydrating my skin in the morning with a serum and a light essence. It mattified INSTANTLY upon contact with my skin, and the finish that it left was far better than the finish I got from the two mattifiers I’ve mentioned above. The Matte 12 gave me an incredibly soft, insanely smooth, satiny-matte finish *whilst still retaining my skin’s dewiness*. This therefore validates the fact that it binds to just the oil, not the moisture content, in your skin, and therefore doesn’t dehydrate you. The product also lived up to its claims. It mattified my skin with nary a hint of grease or shine for about 10 hours, and then the shine started showing through by the 11th hour, but it was very, very minimal, and my face was far from being a grease slick. That’s still incredibly good.
The other mattifiers that I tried gave me matte skin. That was about it. The major drawback was that they accentuated every single flaw on my skin and made it look dull and lifeless. I suspect this is because they dried out my skin to mattify it as opposed to just ‘mattifying’ it like this product did. This has become my absolute holy grail, and I’m going to stick with it forever. I also got the HA Blur from the Finisher Series, but I haven’t tried that one yet. When I do, I’ll review it separately.
