If you know Murad’s Essential C night moisturizer, the City Skin overnight is a far superior formulation that basically makes the Essential C one obsolete.
The Essential C night moisturizer smells like rotten oranges, can leave skin too greasy, and the tube spurts out too much. (though still a fine product)
This City Skin overnight detox (which doesn’t detox, but whatever) is super moisturizing. Yet it’s also very light at the same time. It does not leave an residue on your skin. It smells regal – almost like neroli – but the scent disappears as soon as you put it on. And the jar dispenser is lovely – you really have control over how much comes out.
Only downside? Maybe it’s a little pricy, and maybe it doesn’t have as many antioxidants as some other premium night creams. But for Murad this is an excellent choice. Their recent formulations (this, city skin 50 SPF, retinol youth serum/retinol cream) are much better than their old ones.

Thankfully I did not purchase this. I received a sample as part of my 500 reward at Sephora. First things first. This moisturizer is $70 (!!!). Although I didn’t pay for it, when something is that expensive I expect to be knocked off my feet. I At first application I didn’t really notice anything. It applied nicely, was non greasy and was relatively quick absorbing. The issue I had was the smell. It was very unpleasant to me. Kind of musty and plastic smelling. Sounds gross right? All the Murad products I have used have never had pleasant smells, so I guess this wasn’t a surprise. I just don’t think I could justify being able to smell this on my face every night unless it did something amazing to my skin.
The next morning when I woke up, I didn’t notice any changes in my skin. My skin wasn’t brighter or more even toned. Which isn’t surprising considering that you must usually use a product for a while to achieve such results. I continued to use the moisturizer the next night, and it was a couple days later that I began to notice a couple huge pimples beginning to form. I was not happy. Especially considering my skin had been clearing up. And these pimples weren’t just your little blackheads or whiteheads. They were huge, bright red, nasty looking and feeling bumps under my skin. Needless to say, I stopped using the moisturizer.
Fast forward to a couple weeks later. I decided to give this moisturizer one last try. I applied it the first night and noticed nothing the next morning. The following night I applied it again and woke up to 3 new large pimples beginning to form under my skin. One on my forehead and 2 around my mouth. Now I am convinced that it’s the moisturizer’s fault. I threw it in the garbage, thankful that I did not buy the full size bottle.

This cream did make my skin brighter with each application. It has a light scent free texture that I quite like and layers well over your other products. This cream is just not hydrating enough for me. I prefer a richer night cream. At $84 CAD, this is also a bit more than I’m willing to spend on a cream that doesn’t do everything for me.
