I ditched all my face washes, creams and treatments for just raw hemp seed oil and my face has surprisingly been clearing up better. I unfortunately have very dry and acne prone skin which I have read can be from low linolic acid and high olieic acid in the skin. Hemp seed oil is high in linolic and has helped my skin clear up from my crazed pregnancy hormones. This moisturizer is fairly greasy but absorbs quickly leaving your face pretty matte and primed for makeup. It still isn’t moisturizing enough for me though so now I’m using Tamanu oil at nights for extra moisture. The great thing about this lotion is that has a comedogenic rating of 0 which means it will NOT clog your pores! But also is the reason it’s not as moisturizing as I need. Tamanu oil is a comedogenic rating of 2/5 which is fine for me to use sparingly.

From what I understand of moisturizers and the different ingredients (from my own experience and this great blog post from Lab Muffin: , it is somewhat difficult for Wholly Hemp’s claim of “Soften and moisturize dry skin with the fast-absorbing hydration of this all natural moisturizing cream.” to be entirely accurate. Since there is no water in the ingredients, there is no actual hydration unless the product is applied to damp, not dry, skin.
I tried the raw version and it smelled very earthy although the smell dissipated after about a half hour. It was very oily on first application but absorbed soon enough. I know a friend who tried it and describes it as a “slab of grease.” It feels like a more oily version of shea butter (since it is mainly shea butter mixed with oils) but it didn’t perform any differently than shea butter for me, giving me eczema patches.
Considering the price of Wholly Hemp’s moisturizer is $2.50-$3.33 per oz it’s comparable to Garden of Wisdom’s price of unrefined shea butter but conveniently comes in a jar. I ended up giving this to my grandmother whose doesn’t have eczema, has less dry skin than I do, and likes shea butter. She finds it a decent alternative.
Overall, I don’t think this is a good choice for someone with dry skin unless they are willing to layer this product over another moisturizer with water or to apply to damp skin. It may be okay for someone who likes shea butter but I don’t think it’s worth going out of your way for.
