I’ve been using Bobbi Brown Skin Weightless Powder foundation, and after using a nightly retinoid, my skin became too dry for the powder foundations. I wanted something with more coverage on special occasions anyways. I found this Anastasia Beverly Hills foundation, and I was really excited to try it.
Since there is no store near me that carries this and I have no idea how to match myself, I reached out to the customer service helpers. They were super helpful and suggested 210N, which I agreed with. It’s a bit too orange for my liking, but it’s pretty close. I may go with the neutral tone rather than the warm tone if I buy again.
The coverage of this is really nice. I have red sensitive skin, and this covers the redness and any blemishes really well.
However, I really have some problems with this foundation. First, the packaging is awful. Perhaps, it was just my bottle, but the cap doesn’t close. This makes traveling with it very difficult. I’ve had a lot of wasted product because the bottle slipped onto its side or got knocked off a shelf, and the cap flew off. Next, this foundation didn’t last long for me. I itch my face in a spot, and there’s a big line in the foundation. I also noticed it kind of “seizing” up around my drier spots? It looked so bad. Maybe using a primer would help, but I’m a low maintenance makeup kind of girl…

I’m not a foundation lover, but this stuff is great! It looks great on. It is easy to blend, looks like my skin, but better, and it’s very glowy. I have true normal skin. I have some wrinkles around my nose and mouth, and a couple on my forehead. I do set my undereyes with powder even though you don’t have to. I love it! I wear 220N and the color is a perfect match.

– finish: dewy, hydrated, not shimmery. it never 100 % sets/dries down.
– coverage: 1 pump gives me medium-full with a brush and light-med with a beautyblender
– texture: slighty runny but creamy
– shade: i use 120 and it matches nc10-12 well. even though this is classified as a warm shade i find it the most neutral of the fair shades. No oxidation whatsoever. it comes in a bunch of shades (i think 50)
– longevity: lasts well, not long wearing but looks decent after 12 hrs. not very transfer proof though.
– packaging: 1 fl. oz, glass bottle with pump.
– ingredients: no problematic ones. if you’re acne prone and react to ethylhexyl palmitate, it’s pretty high up on the list. other than that it contains a bunch of amino acids. it’s weird to me they didn’t decide to advertise this skin care aspect of it.

It’s too bad that this foundation’s release was somewhat glossed over due to the huge influx of new ones on the market at the same time, because even among those exciting, new releases, the Anastasia Beverly Hills Luminous Foundation truly takes the [foundation] cake for me and has become my true holy grail.
First of all, can we talk about the amazing shade range and the fact that there are shades that almost all (we’ll get more into that at the end) people, from all over the spectrum, can find a close shade match in this initial launch? Especially for us olive-skinned individuals out there, there is an array of shades for us to choose from. Hint: olives are classified under “cool golden”.
This foundation truly does everything it claims to do; written on its box, this foundation purports to have ” a medium coverage […] with a luminous, natural finish”. It is a true slightly dewy, natural finish foundation with a medium coverage that’s buildable to full. I’m a beauty sponge user and have tried both a moistened sponge and velvet microfibre sponge with it, and they look equally beautiful both ways; for 2 pumps of foundation, the moistened sponge naturally gives a true medium coverage with a luminous, slightly dewy finish, whilst the microfibre sponge will give a medium-full coverage with a true natural skin finish. Either way, this foundation is almost fool-proof in terms of application–no matter how my skin is reacting on a particular day (whether I have oily PMS skin with a huge zit or have flakier, drier skin than normal), it always looks porcelain doll perfect in the most natural way possible. This foundation completely smooths over skin imperfections and does not emphasize skin texture in any way.
Although this foundation is supposed to be self-setting, I prefer to set my whole face with a luminous loose powder to slightly mattify, yet maintain the glow of my base. I have an oily T-zone, so I do light baking in my pore area, chin, and T-zone to ensure that I don’t look super shiny at the end of the night. Having said that–even when I don’t bake, or am out for at least 10+ hours, this foundation does not break up in patches or in a nasty way whatsoever. I do look pretty shiny at the end of the night, but the way my natural oils melds with the foundation is simply gorgeous. Even though it’s obvious that I’m wearing foundation, my skin still looks like skin.
If you can’t already tell that I am absolutely over the moon IN LOVE with this foundation, I actually brought 3 bottles to mix, match, and even use different shades for different seasons and vacations. Currently, with my baseline NC20 skin, 210N would be ideal, but I’m thirsting for a “cool golden”/olive in this launch, and I resolved to mix 160C and 250C for a perfect match. However, 250C isn’t green enough for a strong olive undertone, so I recently bought the 270C (with very strong olive undertones) and it is utter perfection!
160C = NC17ish, slightly greener MUFE 117=Y225
250C = NC27ish, same depth as NARS Punjab
270C = NC27ish, tiny smidge lighter than 250C, greener than 250C

This is fantastic. The most flattering foundation I have ever worn. It lasts all day in 35 degree heat and high humidity and just looks like really good skin. Exactly what I’ve been looking for, just the right amount of luminosity without being greasy or mask like. I also love the fact that this is a skin friendly formula without alcohol or fragrance. The price is what you’d expect from a high end foundation. I’d definitely recommend going into store to shade match though as the undertones are off- a lot of them don’t match their descriptions. Aside from that this is perfection.

So far I am really loving the new Anastasia Beverly Hills Luminous Foundation. I find that the Luminous Foundation sets to a natural slightly radiant finish and this is a great long wear foundation. Even after a full day of wear (12-14 hours) this doesn’t set into creases or fine lines nor does it accentuate any flakes or dry areas. A small amount of the foundation goes a very long way, and I’ve found applying with a damp Beauty Blender works well. I would say that this foundation is probably more geared towards dry skin, but oily skin will appreciate that this sets nicely with a small amount of finishing powder. It definitely is a water resistant foundation and it does take a little bit of effort to remove it at the end of the day.
The shade range for the Luminous Foundation contains an impressive 50 shades, although I do want to recommend you check out the colors in the store as opposed to ordering it online. I found the shades in the store looked completely different when you actually swatch them. The shade I ended up purchasing is 220N, which is different than I would have chosen if I simply had purchased this online.
The formula of the foundation is also rather skin-friendly! I love that it is fragrance free and doesn’t contain high amounts of denatured alcohol like many other foundations do. The Anastasia Beverly Hills Luminous Foundation also contains some beneficial ingredients for skin in the form of several amino acids. Even better is the fact that this foundation is cruelty free and vegan. The foundation is a little pricey at $38 per bottle, however, a small amount (less than one pump) covers my entire face no problem. This is my current holy grail foundation. I have dry, mature skin which clogs easily, so it’s a challenge to find a moisturizing foundation that doesn’t break me out. I love this and have repurchased it. I have fair skin with pink undertones and I have colors 3 and 5 to get me through the seasons. It does not last throughout the day as well in the summer, so I may try the Japonesque primer. Though I really don’t want to add another step to my morning ritual. I use a very emollient s/s in the fall and winter, so I powder my forehead and neck to improve wear and reduce transfer. I think I may buy a couple of back ups because HG status for me generally means products being discontinued shortly – just warning ya!

So far so good. Purchased on the Ulta (near) half price sale for $19 which is a steal. I had no idea what to expect but knew I could return it if needed, so nothing lost. I’m looking for a new foundation. Like Lancome 24 hour (pricy $49, shade 340…bit sheer), Urban All Night (4.5), Kat Von (54N)….last two tend to run dry on my 44 yo skin. I love the coverage and how they last ALL day. Purchased thr Japonesque bc I still am not 100% sold on my HG foundation.
I must say I was overall pleased. It’s a bit more sheer than I wish, but that is my only issue. Lasts all day [8 hours], looks very natural (no cake face), does not sink in fine lines as the KVD and UD did. Not happy I had to use two pumps (use to putting on less layers w heavier coverage foundations). Fingers worked best (hate to say). Tapping. Patting. This provided the thickest coverage. Too bad, just spend a lot of money on very $ brushes, lol.
I wore several brands (samples) and had a friend give me her opinion. She liked Japonesque and Lancome thr best bc “less dry looking” on my skin. I felt the same when she experimented also. Maybe it’our age….
Anyway, pleased. At this point it’s my new foundation. Wnot call it my HG but it’s very good. Great color match…my winter shade is a 7. I feel this runs light in color overall. Go darker.
** 5 is DARKER than 6. Please note. Someone else mentioned this and it is true. Possibly I could be a 5 (next down in color from 7 since 6 is lighter). I opted to go with the 7 since overall it is a great match for me (drop of a tad dark but spring is here). See my other color matches above. Think I was a NC30 at one point. Years ago….not sure Mac color anymore.
I would have given this 5 lippies but bc I need two layers for a medium full coverage, I dropped one lippie. I just prefer more coverage BUT for the $19 sale price, who cares. I will just wear more laters. My skin seems to be clear for now (using carrot oil w hemp carrier….working). I’m not sure of I have pimples how this would look. That is on my radar.
I wouldn’t say this is luminous persay, but is not dry/matte looking either. It’s just right on my 44 yo skin. Covers my uneven red tone with two layers where needed and tapping on w fingers. Humm….what else? For now, this is my go to. I bet if I added a drop of KVD or Urban All Night foundation to this, it would be my HG. I have samples and may try this at some point.
UPDATE: 7 is a bit too dark for my white winter skin. Going to try the 5 (bc 6 is lighter than 5 IMO swatching at Ulta). 7 will be great with a little sun 🙂

I bought Shade 04 to match my NC25 skin. The color tends towards yellow, which I like to tone down the natural ruddiness of my complextion, but it’s not a great match. The coverage is on the light side, and I prefer something a bit more opaque to even out my skin tone. I do like the slip of it on my skin and it’s moisturizing abilities, but in the end it’s just too transparent for me, more like a TM. No sunscreen, either, which takes points off (my mature skin needs defending). Would not purchase again.

This foundation burned my skin and made it so red that after five minutes or so you could actually see a hint of red THROUGH the foundation I had just applied! And I would call this a medium to full coverage foundation, so that’s a lot of redness… I suspect the fragrance is what was causing it. I totally didn’t think to check if it contained fragrance because foundations usually don’t. I have sensitive skin and can only use unscented face products.
This has a really nice pump that I liked a lot. Not super important to me, but I thought I’d mention it.
Color-wise, this foundation is great. I was able to find a perfect match for my (neutral-leaning-warn, light-medium) skin tone and it did not oxidize at all. A lot of foundations seem to oxidize on me! I didn’t find it particularly luminous, but it’s not super duper matte, either. If it hadn’t burned my skin so bad I would have kept it! Sadly, I returned it to Ulta.

This has great coverage and some wonderful tones for lighter skin. But it is NOT luminous if you have very dry skin. I got this is a less expensive alternative to my Chanel Vitalumiere, which is great but for the $70 plus price. I applied Chanel on one side of my face and the Japonesque product on the other There was a noticeable difference and not in a good way. The Japonesque side looked very dry, almost chalky after application and the Chanel side had a nice glow.
The coverage was excellent though so if you don’t have super dry skin, as I do, you may love this for the shade selection and coverage.

Never even blinked an eye at this brand until recently when I was looking for a new foundation. I saw the word “luminous” and immediately got matched, shade 6 matches perfectly. Not as dewy as I wanted but I’m so impressed with how long wearing it is! Lasted 12 hours through school and work and covers all my acne scars and blemishes. It’s still a nice finish and I can play it up with a good highlight and setting spray

Love this foundation!
First of all the finish; The finish is very natural, not as dewy as Armani Luminous Silk or MUFE Ultra HD, as they tend to become shiny when the days goes on. This one stays that perfect natural glowy finish all day. I use it with MUFE Step one redness correcting primer and Hourglass Mineral primer.
It dries quicker than the two earlier mentioned as well, so it is great for building up coverage, but blend out in sections instead of dotting it all over. I really liked that it dries quickly, makes it faster to apply. It blends out easily.
It is medium in coverage but can be build up or sheered out.
I use the shade 1 – a very fair shade with neutral undertones. It is really close to MUFE Ultra HD in Y215, but that one is a tiny bit warmer and darker, but they are really almost identical! I could put one on one side of the face and one on the other side, and you wouldn’t notice.

This is a great medium/buildable coverage foundation. The luminous texture helps to give it that second skin finish. I have super sensitive skin and minor melasma (hyperpigmentation) around my eyes, forehead, and mouth; this foundation has been a godsend! I use a stipple foundation brush to apply and it really gives my skin that flawless airbrushed look. I was using Mac Studio Finish fluid in NC25 but it was a little too orang-y for my complexion. Japonesque has a lighter texture and is definitely more comfortable that MAC for daytime wear. It gives the same amount of coverage as MAC Studio Fix Fluid without that heavy feeling. What I love most would have to be the color. I use shade 04 (medium light for golden/olive undertone) and I love it! I have neutral skin but I find that something with a hint of yellow helps balance out any redness. Not onto the bad stuff. May not be suitable for very dry skin. I highly recommend moisturizing before using. It tends to cling onto dry patches and that’s not cute. I’ve also found that this does not blend well with some brands of liquid highlighter; although, I’ve never tried the Japonesque luminizer. I made the mistake of mixing with Revlon’s skin lights and I looked like a flakey mess. I’m not a huge fan of the plastic lid. It’s a bit cheap feeling. I highly recomend trying the Japonesque velvet touch concealer, but that’s a whole different review.

So far I like this foundation a lot. Mostly due to the color selection I am a golden medium shade, I selected number 8 so far it looks like my color, being biracial the biggest challange for me is color match, formuala is always secondary. This color so far looks great on me, I will have to check in broad day light and see. the formula is good, not drying and not olily, you can sheer it out for a lighter tinted m or you can build it up with a stippling brush. I usually have to buy custom blend or stick with Bobbi Brown just becauce I am a deep golden shade which difficult to find most deeper color start to get very red or pink in them. I always used Laura Mericer TM in Sand, Bobbi Brown foundation in 4.5 and Mac NC 40-42ish and IMAN sand stick foundation. I will update if the color doesnt work out, but if your like me give this a try, its a bit step, at 38 dollars I was lucky I had 20 dollars worth of points at Ulta so this was a win for me.
I had to change this to shade 7, shade 8 was just a bit to deep.
Had to return very full coverage and not the right shade.
