Completely agree with the previous post. They changed the formulation and packaging for the worse. The lipstick was my go-to and now it’s a glossy balm basically and the new tube feels cheap and less comfortable in the hand. Way too pricey for a lipgloss, and a huge disappointment to find my HG lipstick now an overpriced lip balm.

Where do I start?
It was back in the dawn of times in the mid to late Nineties when I discovered NARS, their lipsticks, and Gypsy in particular and wore them for years. Gipsy, Dolce Vita and Funny Face, a red, a neutral and a bright, all bases covered.
And then I strayed, as we all do, and only came back to Gipsy last week, after I discovered the original lipsticks have been re-issued, so I went and bought a shiny fresh new Gipsy.
It seems more brick in colour, rather the lovely muted red it was. It’s muddier somehow and greasier. it feels very balmy on the lips, it’s certainly moisturising but the sheer and easy feel have gone.
The packaging is different, it’s bigger and more angular, it doesn’t fit as easy in the palm as it did and at the same time it’s lighter in weight. It looks and feels flimsy and cheap. It doesn’t quite have the velvety grip the old lipstick case had.
Sorry, NARS. I’ll be straying again.

The Nars sheers are among my favorite in the entire world of lipstick. They’re been around for a long time and are now overshadowed by newer formulas and brands, but the ones I own (Gipsy, Shrinagar, and Damage) are absolutely perfect lipsticks. I feel like a broken record, but the older Nars lipstick line has some of the most wondrous and interesting colors. Every shade has something special about it that differentiates it from possible dupes. It’s real artistry and it makes me feel like they were created for love vs money.
Anyway, Gipsy is a muted neutral red that’s so easy to wear and perfect for both work and going out. You can manipulate it from a light rosy flush to medium-opaque with how many layers you apply. It feels comfortable on, is moisturizing—doesn’t last crazy long but it’s not bad at ALL for a sheer. It sinks in a bit and leaves a slight stain. It leans more rust than berry, but overall it’s just a sheer browny red. I see why someone compared it to MAC Hot Tahiti (another one of my absolute favorites tbh) but I think HT has more of a berry tone. It’s easy to apply, reapply, and wear all day without having to stress about it. It’s not cheap obviously.
Gipsy is a conceptual shade; I’m sure it was literally inspired by all the name conjures up. It makes me feel exotic and sensual without feeling like I’m trying too hard or like I look too made up. For reference, I have dark hair/eyes and pale olive skin and prefer a medium-natural look. It gives a juicy and mysterious aura to your face.
These are all the NARS sheer lipsticks (for my reference and yours!):
Many, especially the lighter shades, are very very sheer. The deeper shades are definitely more robust. If you have darker skin, I strongly urge you to try Tanganyka!

I just randomly grabbed this to try one day and thought…”I think I like this”. I was just itching for a new lipstick too. Then I come here to see what others think of the shade and I am noticing a pattern. NW’s, specifically in the 10-25 range are loving this shade ( I am nw20, deep winter)! I read a few things in the reviews that really nailed this shade, but to my surprise, people were referring to it as a warm sheer berry. It is definitely sheer and I never really thought it was that red, so I guess that is accurate. It reminds me of MAC Spice it Up. It is similar to MAC Hot Tahiti, but that can come off much deeper/darker than this shade. It also felt like a sheer less warm version of MAC Brick-O-La. Another reviewer (darkharbour) nailed how I saw this shade when they referred to the color as being “earthy and muted”. That is exactly how I see this shade. It is typicially what you might think of as a fall shade (in the muted earthy feel, not the deep vampy feel), but it works all year. I have been wearing it alot this summer because of the juicy light feel.
Now if you have not tried these NARS sheers you may be disappointed, they are sheer. Back in my 20’s I would have scoffed at these as too much money, for too sheer of lip or too “dull”. But as 44 looms around the corner, these sheer, juicy shades are lip savers! My lips look soft and supple and not like relief maps. I am at the point where even creamy lipsticks can go bad on my lips so these sheer formulas have been making me very happy lately.

This was £22! For a lipstick!
Colour is perfect for me, an almost sheer red, brickish undertones so it doesn’t dry down pink like others do on me. Is really pretty as a daily wear without being ‘too much’ like other reds.
As it is kind of sheer, it doesn’t last like some reds, but tbh it does last pretty well. I just topped up after a tea and pain au chocolat and I still had faint red lips.
I love the colour and the packaging. Absolutely hate the price, it is obscene. However, as I’m a mug I’ll probably buy again.

Gipsy is my fave red shade, probably my fave NARS lipstick. Dolce Vita is a good red MLBB but I don’t like in-your-face-reds so this is perf for me. Other reds I like are NARS Cruella/Rikugen; MAC Cyndi Lauper VG; elizabeth Arden brick, KvD Save The Chimps, & Clinique angel red. I can wear bright pinks but bright reds truly really scare me. I would rebuy this in a heartbeat if I lose it or use it up. NARS is cost prohibitive for me to own a lot of their stuff but every single thing I’ve bought from them was a big hit!! This is a warm brown red…brick…not berry, nor fuchsia. I am LLL NC20 Brown hair grey eyes this is a good shade for those who wear glasses!! #winning #babysfirstredlipstick (lol)

I bought this lipstick online, and I adore it. I’m not sure how I haven’t come across it until now. I’m very pale, and on me it looks like a warm chestnut, or muted brick red with a berry tinge to it. The texture is lovely – sheer and very light, yet as it’s a rich colour it tends to leave a long-lasting stain on my lips (the actual lipstick isn’t super long lasting, which is more of an issue with Dolce Vita as it’s a paler shade).
It’s really flattering on my skin tone, and looks great in autumn or winter – I don’t need to add a ton of eye make up to avoid looking washed out, which is a bonus, as it doesn’t have a brown base shade. I can imagine it would look brighter and redder on darker skin-tones than mine. I used to wear Bobbi Brown Carolina all winter long, but this is definitely a nicer lipstick in terms of colour and texture – it looks slightly ‘younger’!

All I have to say is that I am on my fifth tube of this lipstick and honestly, I can’t think of one other lipstick that I’ve bought more than once. (I’m very flinty when it comes to lipsticks.) This is the perfect red. Very natural, very flattering. My only quibble is that for me it doesn’t have tremendous staying power, but given that it’s also not drying, that is pretty much par for the course. I am blonde, blue eyed, fair skin. This is definitely my HG lipstick.

LOVE IT!!!!! I watched a very wonderful youtube review for this lipstick, and I just adore this sweet lady. She is actually honest about her reviews, and I admire that. Anyway, she doesn’t have the same skin type as I do, but she does have the same warm skin tone. This color looked so beautiful on her, so I decided to pick it up, and I’m so happy I did! I’m not the type of woman who even buys expensive lipsticks ( Mac is as high as I go usually), but this color is lovely for warm undertones. It’s so hard to find a warm red with gold undertones! I usually find reds with a cool blue undertone, and I just cannot wear those. If you know of a great cheapie red with warm under tones please let me know!
I will definitely re-buy this color though, and I love NARS packaging too.

I’ve been on such a lipstick kick lately, but wanted something a little less “in your face.” I decided on Gipsy after spending a few hours looking at swatches online, and eventually trying it out in Sephora. My lips are naturally pretty pigmented, and the sheer quality of Gipsy doesn’t necessarily make them red, but gives them a nice sort of berry tint. I’ve only worn it a few times thus far, but have been complimented on it a lot (which is always nice when wearing something new)! One of my coworkers I hadn’t seen in a while said I “must have done something with my lips!”
It is a bit drying, which makes it not my favorite product of all time, but certainly less so than other lipsticks I own. If I remember to put some balm on beforehand (or layer it throughout the day), I’m usually set. The lasting power also isn’t the strongest, but it is an easy reapplication, and I don’t really think you even need a mirror. But, for these two things, I’ve rated it as a four.
All in all, I think it might become my go-to lipstick, especially on days when I just want to give my face a little pick-me-up.
