Kjaer Weis recently added lipsticks, glosses, and pencils to their line. Previously, they’d only had Lip Tints (which I love), but sometimes you just want a lip product in a tube, you know? I chose Adore, a deep blue-red that leans more neutral than cool. In keeping with the KW philosophy, it comes in a refillable component. The silver holder is heavy, hefty, fairly thick, and bears the KW logo. It feels great in your hand, like all of KW’s components, the swivel mechanism works flawlessly, and it closes securely (although there’s no click). The lipstick bullet, which is conventionally shaped (slanted), comes in a small, lidded, plastic capsule of sorts that’s very easy to pop in and out of the tube, store, and keep your refills fresh. The bullet retracts completely into the tube–no worries about getting it all over the top. The texture is creamy but somewhat firm. I wasn’t sure I liked it until I tried it–it allows you to apply a sheer wash (which is a lovely pinky red) easily and build up to full coverage (that classic red) equally easily, and it doesn’t look heavy or accentuate lines. Once on the lips, it stays on, and does not bleed (again, that texture). It transfers a bit, but not much, leaves a pretty stain on the lips as it fades (which it does not do quickly), and stands up to the occasional slick of lip balm. I don’t find it particularly moisturizing, but it’s not at all drying, either. There is no scent except maybe the faintest hint of shea butter. I wore this to a party (makeup–great skin, light shimmery shadow, liner, brows, mascara, a touch of blush, and this), and I have never gotten so many compliments on a lipstick in my entire life. Other women who were wearing red lipstick asked me what I was wearing because they wanted THAT red, not the one they were wearing. It is very flattering to my NC 15-20 complexion, and despite it being a pretty dramatic shade, I would feel comfortable wearing it during the day (although perhaps less of it). The cons are that it’s expensive ($56 for one shade and a component; $36 for a refill) and the tube is heavy and bulky (what is it with lipstick packaging having become a huge space-consumer lately?), but if you want clean beauty that’s high quality, this may be what you’re looking for. One caveat–the shades you see online are not accurate, and I don’t find KW’s descriptions particularly so either. While Adore really is “A deep, timeless red,” I tried Believe first (there are only eight shades at this time), which is described as a “A classic neutral plum.” On me, it is straight-up orange, and you’ll see the same color in web photos–not in the tube, but on people’s lips. So if you have to buy blind (KW is not easily accessible), please use a site that offers samples (there are several) and save yourself a $36 mistake. Overall, though, this is a stunning, classic red lipstick that’s also versatile, clean, and comfortable, and I would repurchase in a heartbeat.
