This is my new go-to lipstick. I was in a quandary when found out MAC is now funding animal testing so they can market in China – their Paramount and Film Noir had been my favorites for a long time. So I went looking for a new cruelty-free lipstick.
After a lot of web searching and clicking into sites selling that natural-nude look stuff (No! Not for me, I want glam!) I found Besame. My first order included Noir Red and Cherry Red. The Cherry Red was a little bright for me so I gave it to someone who can rock it, but I’ve already ordered a backup for the Noir. I love it.
It goes on pretty dark. I suggest using a brush to even it up as it can look a little blotchy otherwise. And you want to get the lip line just right, a brush helps a lot with that. Any good lip brush will do, but the Besame brush is perfect and it comes with a gold toned cover, so you can throw it in your makeup bag with no mess.
After awhile the color mellows to a nice berry red stain, lighter but still easily visible. It STAYS, but it doesn’t dry your lips the way a lot of stains do. If you want to stay with it, it’s good all day and into the night with minimal touching up after meals and the like. Or you can keep it built up and dark. It’s very easy to work with and a true retro shade, cloned from an actual 1930 lipstick. When you see those black and white photos of a very dark-lipped Jean Harlow, Myrna Loy or Bette Davis from this period, they’re wearing a shade similar to Noir Red.
The packaging, of course, is lovely. You’re not paying $22 for lipstick in cheesy plastic, you get a nice metal tube with the red Besame flower logo. I’ll be staying with this one.

I love the Besame lipsticks! The packaging is so beautiful. You really feel like you’ve gone back in time. Before the 1960s, lipsticks were much smaller, so the Besame lipsticks are smaller than a typical lipstick (which I know some people have complained about). I think it adds to the retro feel and experience though. They are totally vintage.
I think the Besame lipsticks are similar to the MAC cremesheen lipsticks in formula, finish, and even the vanilla scent. The shade “Noir Red” is an intense, vampy blackened red that is totally 1930s. You’ll feel like a black and white film star!
The only reason I wouldn’t repurchase is that for shipping to Canada, the brokerage and customs fees weren’t included. Besame ships using UPS and they charged me an additional $55 CAD! which means I’m not likely to place another order.

This has become my holy grail lipstick. The container is beautiful, the pigment is the richest of any lipstick I’ve ever used, and the color is perfect for me. Just the tiniest amount will give a lovely lip stain that lasts all day. After trying this lipstick, I now want to buy every lipstick Besame makes. And I want to try their other products, too.

I traded Besame Portrait Pink for Noir Red, and I am so glad I did. I love this lipstick! The formulation is creamy and extremely pigmented, a deep blackberry color that reminds me of Chanel Rouge Noir. In the tube, Noir is scary dark, but I applied it directly to my lips anyway; then I blotted it down to a stain and applied a bit of Julie Hewett lip balm over top to smooth everything out. It complemented my fair neutral/cool skin tone and medium-rosy pigmented lips. I will buy this color again and again.
I agree with reviewer ulula that this lipstick tends to slide around. It is a semi matte, thus not as sticky as my other favorite retro lipstick brand (Julie Hewett), so it needs something to anchor it down. I suppose you could use the Cerise end of the Besame Red/Cerise liner for that purpose; I do not own that, so I cannot comment as to its matchability. I use either Julie Hewett Sin Noir lip pencil or Edward Bess Nude. With the Sin Noir, the colors are very similar, so I can completely fill in my lips with the liner color and then put Noir Red on top.
I only discovered the Besame Cosmeics brand earlier this month, but loyal customers might be interested in knowing that Besame is revamping again. I contacted their customer service to inquire about their plans for some of the pinks no longer available on their web site or anywhere else for that matter, such as Dusty Rose. They told me that they are bringing back the sold out pinks in early Q2 in a slightly larger, different tube. I personally adore the tiny gold tube, but customers must have complained about the size and the fact that the product does not fully retract into the tube. Eventually, the classic Enchanting lipstick line will be available as a red set only. Bummer for me. I love the petite (historically authentic) size and shape, which makes it easy to line.

Noir Red is an intensely pigmented deep blackberry red. Great on south asians. Our teeth look whiter.

I finally gave in and ordered Noir Red through the stock clearance that the Besame site was doing. Ordering 4 tubes of the same (untried) color of lipstick wasn’t really as insane as some people might think; if I liked the color, I would have a stockpile of it. If for some reason the color didn’t work on me, most of my friends prefer dark dark red lipstick and Noir Red would be sure to work on a few of them. $20 for 4 lipsticks was a deal I couldn’t pass up.
Noir Red is wonderful. The color is a mix of deep cherry and blackberry, with a hint of fuchsia. Imagine a glass of red wine held up to the light: that’s the color of Noir Red. In other words, the perfect everyday color for elegant Goths and vintage vixens.
The lipstick is heavily pigmented, and the color goes on smoothly and evenly. The size was a bit startling, even if the case was gorgeous. I had read other reviews mentioning the size, but they hadn’t quite prepared me for the miniature lipstick. But the depth of color almost makes up for the smaller size, and the lipstick comes with a tiny red velvet carrying bag. How could I resist?

The quality of this product is just fantastic. It applies smoothly and with rich pigmentation. It stays put with a dusting of powder and without lip liner. My problem with this lipstick is really just the color. It simply is not for me — too dark, with hints of brown and fuschia. It made my lips look small, even when i overdrew them. Ah well, back to my brighter reds.

I would buy this lipstick again, but I doubt I will have to. I think it will last a long time. I wouldn’t call this “red”. It’s sort of a deep blackberry. It is highly pigmented and does work as a lipstick or a stain. It is long lasting. The color is lovely but it is probably too dark for me for daytime. I’m caucasian with medium/fair neutral skin. Also, as with most dark lipsticks, it really looks bad if my lips are even a tiny bit chapped. I think the tube is cute and I don’t mind that it’s small, but it is stupid that the lipstick sticks up over the end of the tube. It means you have to be VERY careful putting the top back on because one tiny mm off target and you take a chunk out of the lipstick. I know; I did that once already. Oh, also it is slightly matte but very creamy. This lipstick would be beautiful on a dark-skinned woman and I think it will look great on me at night.

Do you know those pictures of old ’20’s silent film stars? Although they were black and white, you could still see a dangerously dark lip, bordering on black? Well, this is your color. If Chanel made a lip version of the nailpolish “Vamp,” this would be it. Such a beautiful color on my very pale, neutral skin. You can also apply it very lightly as a stain for day. But I prefer to slather it on and walk the streets at night. Speaking of applying it at night, be prepared to wake up the next morning with really red lips. This stuff is pigmented like crazy and lasts for 24 hours.

I absolutely love this color. It’s so amazing. Although the size is small, it packs a punch, and is sooo worth the money. Plus it’s so glamorous and beautifully packaged. Don’t hesitate to try this line… I’m in love with it!
