It’s a Xmas gift. And I was in need of a lip balm. Every year, my lip cracks oand bleeds before/ around Xmas cuz of the low humidity.
I layered this one, quite thickly, at nite before bed. Guess what, crack, blood and painful, on the following morning.
The following nite, I put not an insubstantial amount of this of my lip. Same. The crack was still there, blood, and painful.
I now using it under some of the matte lipstick I have to make those lipsticks less matte / drying. It works great together with wet n wet mega last ( matte lipstick) turns that into a low/ medium glossy lipstick.

I bought this after using Seba Med- SPF 30. Was looking for something very luxurious, soothing and actually did the job. Had 3 options, this vs Clinique Repairwear Intensive Lip Treatment and Clarins. The Clarins counter didn’t carry the Clarins ‘Eclat Minute’ Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector so between this and Clinique I decided on Shiseido purely because I wanted something with sun protection ingredients.
Pricewise between the Clinique and Shiseido, there’s almost no difference. This product retailed at $SGD 59 and Clinique retailed at $SGD53 thereabouts.
In terms of packaging, Clinique came in a stick format and this Shiseido product came in a squeeze type format. I have no preference. I just want to get my lips healed in the most luxurious way.
What struck out for me, was the ingredients used in Shiseido, I felt that I was getting more luxe for almost the same price.
Shiseido promises to
1. enhance lip contous
2. give lips a plumped look
3. promote a lustrous smooth textured lip.
According to Shiseido, the product is
Developed with Shiseido exclusive Anti-Photowrinkle System – after reviewing the ingredients I still have no idea what is so exclusive about it other than the chlorella and the SPF more about this later.
Formulated with Marine Collagen, an exceptional natural humectant (more of this later)
And is Dermatologist Tested.
Upon application it feels like any other petroleum based product, and rightfully so, considering the ingredients used:
Diisosteraryl malate – acts as a skin conditioning emollient, or a barrier.
microcrystalline wax – de-oiled petroleum, i believe to act as a carrier for all the ingredients (beeswax is supposed to be a better compared to this.. but oh well)
glyceryl diisosterate – lubricant to give you that smooth texture
phenoxyethanol – this is used to preserve the ingredients, and act as a replacement for parabens. Those who are incredibly sensitive may want to do a skin test first. Toxicity of this product is still debated.
methicone – skin conditioning ageing used as a skin barier.
Also there’s a nice minty touch thanks to menthol used in this product.
As for its efficacy, I’m not sure because I just used this product a few hours ago, 2 hours to be exact. I don’t sense wonders, but I do feel like my lip is buzzing, perhaps because of the vitamin P in the form of Glucosyl Hesperidin, used in this product which is supposed to promote blood circulation.
I also do sense the retinyl acetate a type of vitamin A in effect. All the dead skin cells has just dropped off like I just had a gentle lip exfoliation. The retinyl acetate in this product is supposed to be an anti ageing treatment for sensitive skin.
I probably will need to wait some time before the Vitamin Es (tocopherols) in this product do their magic to heal my lips. Tocopherol – Vitamin E is supposed to help in skin healing. This product also contains tocopheryl acetate – same thing different form, those who are sensitive may want to do a skin test before trying out this product as you may break out in hives.
Shiseido added polymethyl methacrylate to this product, I’m not sure whether it has been effective although it is very interesting. Cause other than the buzzing feeling and the gentle exfoliation I do not sense any other dramatic difference. But this ingredient remains very interesting- sometimes called acrylic glass, in very small amounts it is used to reduce scars and wrinkle permanently via injection underneath the skin. I’m thinking I probably paid a little more for something that may not be very effective on the surface of the skin, and very unlikely to be absorb under the skin’s surface unless your lips are so badly chapped and torn a part like mine, you may experience some difference.
I definitely sense that my lips feel a bit soothed after applying this product. Even after the dead skin cells practically dropped off. And I sense it has to do with the stearyl-glycyrrhetinate – supposed to have anti- inflammatory properties, the marine collagens, Chlorella vulgaris and marine based soluble collagen protecting lips from losing moisture.
There’s a mystery ingredient in this product. If you know what is this to share. Peg/Ppg 36/41 Dimethyl Ether – a lot of Shiseido products have this as an ingredient.
On a whole, I would say, if your looking for lip treatment and if you can find something in beeswax instead of petrolatum products (like this), with SPF and marine collagen and Vitamin A, E and P which is slightly cheaper. Go for that. But if you want to save the trouble of looking I recommend this product as a day product, to be applied under lipstick. It has sunscreen ingredients like titanium dioxide and dextrin-palmitate.
Would I recommend this for 24/7 use? No not really because of the Vitamin A involved and the unnecessary application of titanium dioxide on your lips at night. For night time application, use something else.

I use in the morning before my makeup to heal my chapped lips, generally only during the winter months. This stuff works I can say almost as good as carmax, and I love the consistency much more. Highly recommend.

I have used this product for the last 8 years. I have one in my make up drawer and one in my winter coat pocket (I live in the Windy City-the cold temps and dry air wreak havoc on my lips in the winter months-of which there are far too many!).
I use Benefiance in the morning after I put on my moisturizer and before I put on all my other makeup. I’ve found that waiting about 10 minutes before applying any other lip product (liner/lipstick/lip stain or gloss) really softens my lip and makes any other product look much better. I also use a coating at night, before bed.
The product has “Marine Collagen” listed as an active ingredient. I had to look up what that was, as I knew it was not the same collagen I was familiar with. This is what came up when I entered “topical marine collagen” into a search engine:
“We can fight signs of aging by utilizing the collagen extracted from marine sources, such as codfish. This type of collagen, unlike that that comes from animals, has a smaller molecular structure which can be absorbed by human skin. This makes it perfect as a topical formula, since it can penetrate the outer layers of the skin and increase the collagen levels below the surface where it’s needed.
Increasing collagen levels will return elasticity and mobility to the skin. This in turn plumps up existing lines and wrinkles and prevents new ones from forming. Marine collagen is used in combination with polypeptides in skin care formulas, to allow it to penetrate the skin, as well as encouraging the body’s natural collagen production to be increased. Therefore the benefits are two fold, adding collagen and increasing the production of collagen.”
This explains why this product does such a good job at keeping the lips soft and smooth. I cannot say that I noticed any anti-aging or plumping benefits, but there certainty have not been any noticeable wrinkling above my lip line (and I am “of-the-age that that could be happening).
This product comes in a tube that has a slanted applicator tip with a small hole in it. This allows the user to easily control how much product comes out of the tube. It’s also much more sanitary to use than a balm that comes in a lipstick-tube style. The only downfall in the packaging is that the tube has gold lettering and detail-work on it that, over time, flakes off.
So yes, while the cost is high ($35) I will continue to buy this product. Shiseido recommends replacing this product every 3 months; I am never even halfway through a tube by that point; I’ve found a tube lasts me nearly a year.

This definitely works for me: feels light and not sticky, stays put, hydrates my lips well, minimizes the appearance of lines, lightens, and definitely prevents flaking and chapping. After only a couple of days of use I already noticed my lip color and suppleness improve. The smart and hygenic packaging is much better than other lip balms I have tried. This is definitely a keeper.

This is one product which I know genuinely works. When I go to winter countries, my lips always crack and peel, becoming painfully dry. Applying a layer of this lip treatment soothes my painful lips instantly and helps them recover, preventing further moisture loss.
As I live in Singapore, a tropical country, I have no need to applying this treatment regularly, but when I do, it soothes out the lines on my lips and is a fantastic lip balm! Best of all, it does not leave a thick stick layer of residue, like bodyshop lip treatments do, when I try to wipe it off my lips. I apply a thick layer of it on my lips before I sleep and I’ll wake up with plump hydrated pretty pink lips!
Love it!

A collagen lip treatment that smooths out the lips. It doesn’t hydrate very well though.

This is a very nice lip treatment–if I were to give it a grade I’d put it in the B+ range (or perhaps up to an A- if I’m feeling more generous). It has a very convenient applicator, and doesn’t have any noticeable scent (unlike the La Mer lip balm which, quite frankly, I don’t care for because of the mint smell). I didn’t notice any of the benefits this supposedly has, but it is always a nice complement to my lip colors. I have some lipsticks that are very drying, but sometimes manage to salvage those with this lip treatment underneath. With moisturizing lipsticks, a little of this helps them become even silkier and smoother. It also has a nice consistency in staying put, unlike the Kiehl’s which I found a bit runny and too slick. However, it’s also not the miracle worker it claims to be either, and there’s nothing about it that “wows” me so much that I want to shout about it from the rooftops, or give it that perfect five score. To me this is like that perfectly nice, respectable guy you date who you find nothing “wrong” with, yet somehow don’t feel that special chemistry for and don’t want to marry. I’m still looking for my HG lip treatment.

Love this luxury lip balm. It keeps my lips moist, gives a nice sheen, does not contain SPF. It also helps dissolve dry, peeling skin. Great for night or day. There’s nothing much to add except that the hygienic packaging & glossy effect are a plus.

The cons first: price! at the current exchange rate, at $35usd, this would be about $70nzd plus tax, shipping etc… It has a taste, which seeps into my mouth if I drink water. Other than that, nothing.
The texture is divine, dense, rich, not sticky and lasts well. This is another HG lip product next to my Kose Vague lip balm which I have used for several years. It has a menthol sensation, very subtle and not intrusive at all. This stuff stays put and does not run.
Apart from being a nice treatment this is like lip version of Shiseido The Makeup Mascara base — turns dull useless lip colours into beautiful shades and finishes. I have pigmented lip colour, so many rose beige, pink rose and sheer toned colours are lost against my lips. However, many are salvaged if used on top of the lip treatment.
