I am really confused about a recent change (around Nov/Dec 2019) to Nice ‘n Easy and my review, had I written one before, would have been 5 stars hands down. I have been using this hair color in medium brown with beautiful results and no allergies. I’m about 50% white now and I have been dying it for 7 years as a result. My hair is naturally dark brown but hair dye always comes out very dark on me so I find that medium brown is at least sort of natural on me. I was previously using ammonia-free products with terrible results due to a presumed ammonia allergy but the darker brown color quickly faded to a copper-red and my white roots were highlighted and not fully covered. Anyway, I gave the new, creme formula of Nice ‘n Easy a try in the spring of 2019, after they redeveloped the old formula and made it “allergy gentle,” and I got beautiful, rich, dark brown color, full coverage on my roots, and zero fading although I do have to dye my hair every 3 weeks as it grows so fast. I thought I had finally figured out this hair color debacle after 7 years until last week.
I bought a new box a couple weeks ago and didn’t notice that there was a blue circle on the front that says “New! Repair Plex–2x Repair.” The rest of the box is nearly identical and still has the same look, model, and pink flowers on it but the side of the box further touts less breakage and some of the old description is now worded differently. I thought the Repair Plex was something in the conditioner as it says nothing about a new formula. I dyed my hair and after I dried it, my roots were that copper-red color and the white hairs were more like highlighted once again, just like with the ammonia-free dyes out there. There is definitely ammonia as I could still smell it and the dye itself still looks the same as do all of the bottles and containers. I can’t figure this out and there is nothing online reflecting this change aside from some Pinterest images out of Australia (I’m in the US). Even Clairol’s website has images of the old package with the pink flowers and it says “New and Improved” and that is now gone from the new box. Has anyone else run into this? I bought as many boxes of the old product as I could the other day but clearly the old formula is now gone. Why mess with such a great product and create what I can only describe as a bad demi-permanent that in no way works on white hair and turns your brown hair red? I have no idea what to do. Clariol has added this Repair Plex to all of its products now, even the Root Touch-Up, and I’m allergic to Loreal and probably the rest of them. The allergy gentle formula they created really did work for me. I’m so sad about having to go back to copper-red hair with highlights on my white hairs or dealing with chronic eczema around my eyes with the other permanent brands.

Because i like a cream color. When Nice n Easy came out with a cream finally! I had to try it. I was nervous because i read a few bad reviews about the new formula! To my surprise the color went on really smoothly! Really easy to spread around. I picked the 9A because i tend to get brassy . It came out perfect! Colored evenly and feels soft and in better condition than before i colored! I will definitely use it again! I still like Loreal but this color was easier to spread and the color was very similar to Excellence 8 1/2 A

I tried the new formula for Nice and Easy Light Ash Blonde (9A). I had stopped using ash in my hair because many hair dyes tend to give me a green hue when I try to ash my hair. I had my hair done with a 9N blonde. After a week, it bothered me because it just seemed yellow. I hate yellow looking hair so I called Clairol customer care and asked them: (1) if I could use the same level (9) but in the ash to tone my hair, and (2) how long do I wait after it was colored to be safe. They told me I could tone away the yellow using the ash blonde but I should wait at least 14 days since my last coloring and to follow the whole head instructions. I did what they said, crossed my fingers and … it came out perfect. This new ash formula worked great. No green hue. I was also afraid that it would make my hair crunchy but my hair is fine. So now I have the perfect blonde and I couldn’t be happier. I really like the new formula and will continue to use it.

I’ve been using Nice ‘n Easy for 35 years with no issues. The new formula badly burned the skin on the top of one of my ears and on the back of my neck, in addition to a spot on my head. I called Clairol and reported it to them.

I’ve used nice and easy for over ten years while occasionally trying other hair dyes. But nothing ever compared to the OLD nice and easy hair dye which was by far my favourite.
However, I went out to grab some hair dye yesterday and I’ve been afraid to try the new formula but I was brave enough to purchase it… it was also on sale. I dyed my hair as soon as I got home and let me tell you.
My hair is angry. It smells awful. And it’s angry. Even after conditioning, my hair is so dry I can barely run my fingers through it. It feels as if I’ve shampooed it six times in a row without conditioning. My ends are stiff as a board and I can almost hear the split ends crying. This is going to take A LOT of care to get my hair back to being healthy. ☹️
I won’t be purchasing this again. And I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. I feel my journey with box dye is over.

I have been using nice and easy hair coloring for over 20 years. WHY did they feel the need to change their product? I will no longer use nice and easy. Not only did they change the color the gray coverage is horrible. Clairol lost a 20+ year customer ????

I used to bleach my hair before I went all gray and then started to dye it. Nice and Easy was the perfect solution for my grays. I considered myself very lucky to have great results coloring my own hair. Nice and Easy always made my hair nice and shiny and soft for weeks. I had very oily hair when I was younger so I always liked the feeling of it after processing.
I tried the new formula and had an allergic reaction to it. My scalp burned and itched and my hair was dull and flat. And the hideous new scent was almost impossible to get rid of.
I waited all summer for my growth to get to the point that it was very noticeable to try anything else. I switched to Superior Preference 9.5 light natural blonde and the results are good, not great. It does smell better but I don’t get the shine that I really liked.

I have used Nice and easy Dark Auburn for 10 years. This new formula is horrible if you have fine hair. After dying my hair it is very dry and I’m going to need at least 2” cut off the bottom of my hair where it really damaged it. When I go to get my hair cut they have always complement me on how healthy my hair is. Certainly wont happen this time. What were they thinking!

Let me preface this by saying I am so good at hair color. I’ve been doing it myself for 30 years and have taught all my friends my technique. This is not a user error!
Review for new formula
HATE THIS “IMPROVED FORMULA”. I didn’t find the smell terribly offensive. My usual color, light brown, was a little darker than usual but I can also live with that and could compensate for that next time by mixing with the light golden brown in a 50/50 mix. But there will NEVER be a next time! There are 2 complete deal breakers for me and they are:
1/ holy crap is this stuff a runny mess! And
2/ OMG the staining on my hairline was totally ridiculous. I mean to the point that NOTHING, NOT EVEN DAWN DISH SOAP, took it away. It was SO embarrassing I just wanted to stay home. Alas I could not and had to explain to friends and co-workers that this was the unexpected consequence of a reformulated hair color. I would not have believed it had it not happened to me personally but even reading a few of the reviews here I see that I am not alone. Which is only slightly comforting.
In closing: I’m not proud of this but I have a pretty filthy mouth. I LACK ENOUGH CURSE WORDS TO ADEQUATELY CONVEY MY DISPLEASURE WITH THIS FORMULA. Ladies, use this at your own peril and preferably over a period of time where you have the ability to either stay home or wear a scarf on you head. Don’t say you weren’t warned, lol!

This review is for the new and improved formula in the box with the flowers on it.
I recently had used Color Oops to remove the Dark Blonde shade of this dye I had used to colour my locs. Instead of turning out to be a nice light golden blonde or light brown, they turned out an ashy deep brown. After colour removal, they were a pretty but uneven light sandy brown.
So I decided to recolour with #108-Medium Reddish blonde. Did a strand test on one loc and it turned out a light auburn shade, so I went for it and now I have a head full of Medium-Dark auburn hair. Something is dreadfully wrong with a product that consistently turns out MUCH darker than the advertised shade. I deliberately chose a blonde shade so it wouldn’t go too dark, and it’s still flipping brown! 🙁
The only good thing was, the strong floral scent eliminated the sulfurous funk the Colour Ooops left behind.
Going to try to lighten it with a vitamin c/shampoo treatment.
