I am 23 but have some grays. I was using box dye, but realized I was beginning to dye my hair about every 6 weeks. I decided to switch to this because it would be better for my hair. I used to use clairol natural instincts or garnier oila. I would have to mix two boxes, medium brown and light brown. Using ion is actually cheaper. I mix light natural brown and medium ash blonde. I read that it develops dark, so that is why I bought the medium ash blonde to mix in. The tubes are convenient for mixing. I use a half of each into 4 oz of 10 vol developer (1:2 ratio). It doesn’t completely cover my gray, but blends it in. When I do my ends, I mix in clear, as a reviewer suggested. I don’t do a separate batch, just add it to what I have. There is no noxious smell either. I also appreciate that it comes with good instructions for mixing and how well to leave on. My hair feels better, less dry, when I wash it out. Definitely feels much better than box dye. I am also much happier with the tone of my hair. Box dyes were fading and washing out weird. They had a red tone in them that I do not like. I want an ash brown. I am very happy with my color now and it stays well. The color looks more expensive, if that makes sense. More rich might be better phrasing. All in all, it costs less than box dye and is a better quality product. I will not go back to box dye!

My latest color product… i broke up with permanent hair color a while ago, tried a few things like Natural Instincts (do not recommend) and finally tried Ion Color Brilliance Demi in 6rc, mixed with some 7NG, 7WR and 00 clear used with the ion 10 dev. So far I really like this product. Im getting nice, even vibrant (but still natural) looking red. Its gentle and easy to use. The key is to cut the color formula with the 00 clear for the ends. I usually mix up 2 seperate batches, a roots batch and a lengths batch. The roots batch doesnt have any 00 clear, i apply that first, starting at back of my head working forward. Then I do my lengths with the lighter mixture. Let sit 30 mins and wash. Using it every 2 weeks or so. Sometimes i only do the roots because my hair grows quickly. This is a great product but you have to know what youre doing and how this is very different from permanent dyes, so you dont get way darker than you wanted. It does fade and settle into its real shade after 2 washes. Right now this is my fave!

I always finish my hair with using this as my doodle and i can be finished (as opposed to heavy work and need of training to finish) instantly with it. I also like that my scalp did not clog up into an overly saturated mess like with all fake products, just using another dye like Loya.

I always use this after i have highlighted my hair since i’m usually stuck with brassy areas near my roots, not always but no matter how long the bleach is on i get this and i use 40 volume developer but i have medium to dark brown hair naturally. And i do not want to attempt redoing the highlights so i get medium natural brown in ion demi and do a reverse bayalage technique to apply it. Never fails my hair always looks great and it really softens it and gives it life. Just be aware it develops a lot darker but will than fade over time so go for a shade 1-2 shades lighter than what you want if you don’t want your hair being to dark at first. Also it’s great for bleach damaged hair i have had severe bleach damage and weaved this in throughout my head and it instantly makes my hair look and feel healthy and has stopped the dry brittleness it had before. I will never use permanent colour again as it’s damaging and faded to a brassy colour due to the lifting demi will not lighten your hair so you should not have that brassy fade. And it fades over a month so safe for people with natural hair colours to try to go darker as it will fade out and not leave roots.

After a long year of dyeing my hair every color under the sun, I wanted to go back to my natural level 8 ash blonde. I tried achieving that at home with color remover and bleach, and ended up with orange Leeloo hair from Fifth Element.
The salon I chose was able to color correct it to my natural, however the color they used washed out with four washes and I had brassy orange blonde hair. I had my hair toned twice by the salon and decided I could not afford to come back every two weeks to have my hair corrected when it would just wash out (they used permanent toner and color on my hair).
I bought this at Sally’s because it was five dollars and I thought, why the heck not? I’d rather do this at home every two weeks myself than pay hundreds to have a professional do the same thing.
I bought 7 NA blonde, mixed it with 4 oz Ion sensitive 10 developer, and left it on my hair for 5 minutes. I didn’t paint every piece, I slapped it on my head like conditioner, worked it through, and brushed it down. After five minutes, I jumped in the shower, rinsed it out, shampooed, and conditioned.
Wa-lah! My hair is a beautiful medium-dark ash blonde. Almost exactly the same color that I was paying for in the salon, for 95% cost savings. And, this color lasted 3 weeks before I had to do it again (the second time I left it on for 3 minutes to get the same result). I’m so pleased. This color was exactly what I wanted and my hair doesn’t feel any more damaged than it was before I started.
Word of advice: If your hair is porous like mine and you are looking to tone down brassiness, I think you will deeply regret leaving this on your head for longer than five minutes. The hair in my brush that had this color on it for twenty minutes was medium brown.
Update May 2020: here I am years later using this again to tone down level 8 brassy blonde hair. I left it on for 8 minutes which was too long (it’s now a level 6 light brown), and totally my user error- but I know from experience that this will lighten up with washing. I’m so impressed with this brand and will continue to use!

I used this for the first time just now and I’m shocked. I was certain that I would be making an appt tomorrow with my stylist to fix a f*ck up. I used the demi-permanent 4N shade, which was close to the same color in another brand my hair stylist had used on me. I had about an inch of roots, and my natural hair color is about a level 7. My goal was to darken my roots and refresh my overall color. I mixed the color with the ion 10 volume developer (2 oz color to 4oz developer). I sectioned my hair and used a brush and bowl to put the dye on a section at a time, then I rubbed it all in like you would shampoo. I left it in for 30 mins after doing a strand test on a small section underneath my hair. I could tell before I even washed it out after 30 mins that everything was going to turn out ok. I rinsed it and washed it, and then I used L’Oréal damage erasing balm to condition. After blow drying and using my usual leave-ins, it looked pretty darn ok. My roots were blended with the rest of the hair and it is all pretty even. It’s not super shiny and soft, but it doesn’t feel more damaged either. I’m pretty happy with it. I think next time I will use
permanent on the roots though. I would buy this again for sure.

Do not buy this product and expect to get the color from the swatch. I decided to go for 7WR, applying it over my very light brown hair, expecting to get an orange-auburn color. Instead, I got very close to black ! I will not use this product again as it is deceiving.

I like this as a way to cover my grey; its long lasting but not permanent, and adds a little shine. I also appreciate being able to customize my shade by mixing different shades – each tube lasts awhile and so I keep a couple of colors on hand and mix fresh each time and tweak the shade as needed. One big warning- the color goes on darker than the swatch , and I recommend going 2 shades lighter than the result you want. I’m about a level 4-5 naturally, and I buy the dark blonde or medium blonde (level 6-7) to get a medium brown. The level 5n made my hair REALLY dark brown (level 2, maybe 2.5-3)

My hair is naturally about a level 5 brunette with neutral undertones, some gold, some ash. Pretty neutral. It pulls orange when lifted though. I recently have been getting some grays at the young age of 24. It’s probably genetics but I was over seeing the stark white hairs against my dark natural color. So a couple months ago I got highlights. They looked good at first, but over time they began looking more brassy and still were not blending the gray well. So I decided to color over my half virgin half highlighted hair with a Demi. I chose the color 6n dark natural blonde because of the previous reviews warning to pick a lighter shade. I wish I would have chosen a 7 level because it has come out too dark. Also, the undertones are quite red. My hair is down to my waist so I bought two packages of color and did a 1:1 ratio with 10 volume developer which is the suggestion for 100% gray coverage. My grays are still slightly visible despite the 1:1 ratio. They look more like highlighted strands which doesn’t exactly look right compared to the DARK head of hair they lie against. I guess it’s because the white hairs turned the dark natural blonde the color is but color on color made the rest of my hair go to about a level 3 or 4. If I redo my hair in the future, I will choose a level 7, more ash, and probably do a 1:2 ratio instead. It’s a good product but with how incredibly off the swatches are, I am happy it isn’t permanent and honestly can’t wait until it starts to fade. Now I’m just scared it will fade to an awful red color because of how red it looks when light hits it! It wasn’t even from the red copper line of colors to choose from.
