I’m going to begin a series of reviews on products to enhance cool, platinum tones in blonde hair. Most of these products will be anti-brass. I am trying EVERYTHING. My hair is fine, wavy, blown out every other day. As anyone reading this knows, that great ashy tone is tough to hang onto, so in between salon appointments, I turn to color enhancing toners. I’m after deposit only, temporary toning. This will not cover the Wella toners; they’re actually color, and my hair stylist has forbidden me to touch that anymore. I’m after things that make the hair shiny, don’t weigh it down, and don’t give dull, charcoal tones. So, here we go……
My hair is naturally a light, ashy brown, 20%gray, heavily highlighted to an ashy level 10. I want ashy ashy ashy. Borderline silvery, but not granny hair trendy grey.
Laminates/ Cellophanes have been around forever and have been reformulated many times. The current incarnation is available on Amazon. I chose pearl blonde to tone my hair.
I washed with a clarifying shampoo, then towel dried. I applied the gloss with bare hands to damp hair, without staining the skin. The product is nicely packaged in a tube-I could get 4 or so treatments from a tube. The product itself is a slippery, deep lavender gel. I left it on for 30 minutes and then added conditioner and rinsed. I did not shampoo. Also, I did not heat process the color, which may have helped.
The color was beautiful; icy, not purple. The hair was shiny and didn’t feel coated nor damaged. The next day I did shampoo and condition….and the toning was about gone. I suspect heat processing may have given me 2 more shampoos, but perhaps not. I can’t repurchase, because it’s too much work for the lack of longevity.
I’m convinced that maintaining ashy hair is an almost daily chore-adding pigment drops/toning shampoo/toning/conditioner, something you can do every was, or every other wash. I want to stress that my fragile hair had no issues with damage with Laminates, just longevity.
