Trussardi The Black Rose is a unisex rose and patchouli combination sitting on an oriental base of musk, vanilla and amber. Although it contains the highly fragrant, oriental Ta’if rose and oriental characteristics, I will say the fragrance is more transparent, dry and Italian than syrupy, jammy rose and patch combinations hinting at an exotic orient – at least on my skin. It makes me think of chic leather bags and vintage sports cars, a first generation black Thunderbird or maybe a Ferrari Dino for some reason but definitely not a sultry, Arabian nights kind of atmosphere. I think it is a plus in its own way because it is different from the usual jammy roses. The opening is a quite tart pink perfume on my skin, not excatly screechy but quite neon and almost synthetic- though quite well-made and not disturbingly cheap or artificial. This can be pepper added to rose. The heart is mainly rose. It is a young spirited oriental with sweet and spice playing the second fiddle to a rather strong rose. It is not jammy but it is not exactly an innocent rose, either. The patch is well blended, adding a cool and deep aspect to it, although I don’t smell anything to die for. The base is my least favorite part of the fragrance, and unfortunately it comes too quickly. The musk heats up too much on my skin, taking The Black Rose to Dior Homme territory to be honest, and the spice-vanilla combination feels like something I have smellt a thousand times before. It sits at a safe corner and smells like it aims to capture all audiences at once, but ultimately it is not very memorable on my skin. I think The Black Rose is a quality fragrance, it has character and can attract compliments, but ultimately, in the sea of patch and rose combos, I don’t think it is unique enough to warrant a bottle. Good sillage and OK lasting power although the heart disappears too quickly on my skin.
