I don’t like fake smelling chocolate perfumes, but I’m always on a hunt to find a good rich chocolate scent. I had high hopes for this one, and the one thing in it’s favor is that it was not fake-smelling.
In fact, it barely smelled like anything at all. I had to hold my wrist up to my face and sniff hard to even get a tiny whiff of it. It was reminiscent of possibly having used a lightly scented chocolate shower gel hours before and this is all that was left. 20 minutes in, it was gone entirely. Just a tiny hint in the beginning of chocolate and bit of musk—pleasant, but fleeting. And this was after applying it 3 times.
Oh well, back to the drawing board!

This is lovely. A full-bodied chocolate & vanilla extract base, mingled with woodsy notes. It evolves perfectly, and lasts for quite awhile. I usually shy away from food-inspired scents, but this is a perfect way to do it.

Smells like a real chocolate, namely Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bar. Not enough going on here for me.

This is my favorite perfume of all time – at first it smells like fake plastic-y chocolate. Then it dries and it changes to something else. I like to wear it together with my Philosophy cinnamon buns soufflee and call it a day.

This fragrance comes in a very unique bottle (you can get the smaller version now from Sephora exclusively). I bought my 0.68 ounce bottle for $32.50. The first thing I noticed is a delectable yet subtle milk chocolate note that didn’t have a hint of anything artificial or obtuse in it. That in of itself is no small feat since most chocolate scents are obnoxious and smell nothing like real chocolate. The problem here is that the dry down happens within seconds and the scent almost completely fades within minutes. I don’t mind reapplying a scent a few times throughout the day but this was a bit ridiculous. I had to reapply this three times in two hours and I have a very sensitive nose! It dries down to a very mellow slightly chocolaty, soft oriental blend of sandalwood, nuts, chocolate, woodsy citrus and musk that is quite nice. The downside here is that the citrus works against the chocolate note and produces a strange hairspray smell that is not particularly pleasant. The citrus ruined this for me. It’s a strange note to add to something that was near perfect.

Mat Chocolat, at first sniff, is a natural, non-foody smelling chocolate similar to chocolate milk. Described as a “soft oriental” it fully lives up to its classification by being a fragrance with depth beyond its chocolate name, taking the wearer through a journey of musk, sandalwood, as well as nuts and powder. There have been a few complaints that the scent does not have staying power, and this is an argument that I agree with…it only stays on me (noticeably to me) for about an hour or two. I struggled with the notion of purchasing this product for a few months, because of the problem of the staying power. I finally decided that the level of my love for the scent overpowered my general “stay away” attitude that I have towards scents that have weak staying power. Overall, this scent is warm and soothing, and is something I can see myself wearing through out winter.

Lots of chocolate scents have a fake quality to them, or are too sharp and/or powdery. This is weak, but creamy and true. There is something to be said for a snuggle-scent where you do not have to worry about overdoing it. Lots of cool-weather things are too strong. So a 4, because I can see a purpose for this, and because it is unique. Just be aware this would qualify as a body spray level of scent intensity to most people on this board.

i tested this at sephora & bought it anyway before realizing the staying power is not much. says it’s parfum, though…hmmm. very real chocolate but only at first. i detect maybe some woody notes after drydown~ it grounds the chocolate. shame about the staying power. it is unique for a chocolate scent & i wouldn’t call it too foody, either. the poster that said ‘no one would notice unless they came in for a hug’ was absolutely right on. i prefer to waft!

I sprayed this one on for an hour’s test run at Sephora. It is a blend of the most amazing creamy chocolate scent– with a jarring, acidic, citrus note teetering above the chocolate. The contrast of the two does not fit together and ruins what could have been an amazing fragrance. A slight bergamot would have given a smoother citrus accent like orange flavored Belgium chocolate, but instead Mat chose this harsh citrus like dishwashing detergent. A crying shame.

Mat Chocolat does smell utterly lovely in the bottle, and i was very excited to test this one out. the initial spray on my skin did smell like straight chocolate – a cup of hot cocoa from a diner, sans marshmallows but with a dollop of whipped cream. but very quickly – within 15 minutes – the citrus notes turned bitter on me, making the chocolate smell more marshy and rotted than pleasant and cozy. luckily a quick application of alcohol removed it, which didn’t speak well for its lasting power, but i was very grateful that what was left of the scent just wandered through a more grapefruity accord. this was a definite disappointment.
