A better blended and indeed deeper version of Black Opium if you feel the original sits on top of your skin without blending with your chemistry and offering a disconnected parade of notes before mellowing down. That’s what Black Opium does to me in a synthetic, neon, disco glitter ball fashion despite its moderate sillage and lasting power. Black Opium Intense offers a much more settled, well-blended experience in bass tones. No tart and synthetic fruit attack in the top notes, a darker and dry coffee note, and to my nose, a more complex deeper drydown that reminds me of well-made amber scents with a bit of dark edge from licorice. It does not have the vibrancy of Black Opium where the relative transparency of the juice offers more variety to my nose in its development – even if I don’t like it on myself. With Intense, I directly get a dark, deep coffee smell with florals adding width and breath without coming forth much.
Unfortunately, neither Black Opium nor Black Opium intense are power houses with a big statement on me. I feel they lose their oomph fairly quickly, with Black Opium Intense doing better in the long run. I’m not in love with either, but I would love to smell Black Opium Intense on a man – not because it is particularly masculine or anything, I just like the coffee smell. For myself, I’m happy enough with my Dolce & Gabbana The Only One, which has more caramel than vanilla and is a bit more opulent or present on my skin.
