Finally found my signature – Black by Kenneth Cole! This heavenly beautiful EDP is everything I was looking for – sweet, smooth, aquatic floral with no harsh edges and a warm sandalwood skin musk dry down. The jasmine/tuberose combo is clean, light and not overpowering . I’m fragrance sensitive so only light scents for me. As everyone mentions don’t let the name mislead you – it was created for the Black Anniversary – this is a very light clean EDP. I have the 3.4oz purchased for $22 – incredible value – and it lasts me almost 8 hours on my skin.

It seems a bit pointless to review when it’s been discontinued, but I see people getting their hands on discontinued stuff online and via swaps all the time so perhaps it could still be helpful to someone.
I wore this so many years ago that memory would fail me if I tried to describe individual notes, but I remember the overall scent very well, it smelled like a sunny beach, I smelled suntan lotion and frequently got asked whether I was wearing any. Fragrantica lists many floral notes in the opening and heart but other than maybe a hint of violet I didn’t think this smelled floral. I got no citrus at all, and the base of sandalwood and musk and amber would probably take a stretch of imagination for me to detect. It smelled straight up like the beach on me, to myself and others. I liked it, but it didn’t make me want to buy a fragrance to smell like lotion so I didn’t repurchase.
I agree it smells nothing like the name suggests, but I really liked the packaging. Sturdy, simple, and I love black packaging in general.
I had to respray during the day, but lasts on clothes and close to the skin.
Would only recommend to someone who loves suntan smell, otherwise it needs to be tested on skin to see if the white florals show up, as for me they did not.

It does seem odd to rate perfume–it’s so subjective. Black does not suit me. But more objectively, it definitely does not suit its name.
The first word that comes to mind for me is CLEAN. It smells like a light floral soap or laundry detergent or fabric softener sheets. A hint of baby powder and soft musk. It’s inoffensive and would be fine for office wear. I can imagine this suiting someone who wants to smell clean, but at the same time it does have a sort of old school “perfume-y” quality that I can imagine would be a turn off to that type. It’s certainly not as crisp as other “clean” scents.
I don’t smell any sandalwood in this. Similarly, I love heady white florals and am a big fan of tuberose, gardenia, and jasmine, but I can’t pick out any of them in Black–just a generic soapy white floral. Probably because of this, Black doesn’t strike me as particularly girly or as sexy. That said, I am sure there are others who find nothing as sexy as the smell of skin and soap–and Black might be a very sexy (and unisex) scent for them. I can see a man getting away with wearing this, but I would not call it masculine.
On me, Black wears fairly close to the skin and has medium longevity (five hours plus). It can be a bit sharp at first but settles down fairly quickly into the clean-floral-soft-musk profile described above. Aside from the initial sharpness giving way to the soft musk, it doesn’t seem to change very much on my skin.

This is my holy grail fragrance but has been discontinued why do they discontinue such successful lines. Whenever I wore this I always got compliments from men and women and there isn’t anything else I can substitute it with. Fresh crisp green and florals no powdering down to patchouli or goddamn musk or amber. Always fresh crisp and sexy. What a shame

This is my new favorite perfume for spring! Let me start by saying I’m Not typically a fan of florals at all! This one starts out with jasmine and hyacinth on me, I’ve always adored the scent of hyacinth flowers in the spring but have only very rarely seen it as a note in any of the perfumes I enjoy. The drydown on me is a light musky vanilla with the hyacinth and jasmine both still lingering quietly in the background. This is a quiet perfume, not at all harsh or loud, suitable for the office. Sillage is about medium, not overpowering, it stays pretty close, longevity is about 4 hours on me but my skin “eats” perfume, only a small handful of perfumes lasts very long on me. A keeper for me and very well blended IMO.

First impression: gardenia and laundry detergent. Soft enough for work. With a name like Black, I was expecting patchouli or spices or even stronger sandalwood. Not soft floral. If you’re a Fracas type, this is definitely not for you. If you like India Hicks (Crabtree & Evelyn), this may be for you. Tonite, I saw it for $9 at Superstore on Lougheed/Schoolhouse (Coquitlam,BC)

For the name and the bottle, I expected something rich and heady and sensual. I got…weak, linear, watery jasmine. That’s all: unimpressive pale jasmine. None of the rich white velvety beauty of Serge Lutens’ A La Nuit, which is jasmine perfection. Very wimpy. I’ve seen Black at TJMaxx for $20, but that’s even too much for this let-down of a scent.

hmmmm….tuberose….a lot of tuberose…not what I expected from a scent called “Black”. I expected something more exotic.
The opening on this was a blast of citrus. Then it evolved into a slightly citrusy white floral. Violets/tuberose/jasmine. This is a nice but somewhat generic mostly white floral scent. It does dry down somewhat musky.
Black is inoffensive and could be worn to work. It’s just not outstanding, nothing to set it apart from the herd of nice white florals out there. 3 lippies for being o.k, pleasant smelling and inoffensive.

this dries down to a light slightly musky honeysuckle on me. i really like this as a night scent for summer.
