I cannot really comment on price, although I know it’s not cheap. I have tested this several times over the years in stores and was given a decant of it recently. I don’t have much to add to previous reviews except to say, that to my nose, it has a lot in common with the 2012 Balmain Ivoire. I’ve even tested them side by side on separate wrists and found that the main difference is Paris is sharper, and Ivoire is sweeter and dries down to a creamier finish.
Both are low to moderate sillage, smell like they are made of good quality ingredients, and smell understated and elegant. IMO both are suitable for office wear, although the slight sharpness of Paris may annoy some people sensitive to fragrances.
For comparison I am putting the notes for each from Fragrantica.
Balenicaga Paris.
Carnation – Cedar – Violet leaves – Violet flowers – Patchouli
Balmain 2012 Ivoire
Mandarin – Galbanum – Iris – Violet Leaves – Rose – Jasmine – Ylang Ylang – Vetiver – Cedar – Patchouli – Violet
As you can see, they share three main notes.
I prefer L’Essence to Paris as Paris is a tiny bit too sharp for me. If you love Paris, but not the pricetag, test Ivoire and see if it gives you a similar vibe.

I agree with JustPeachy2742’s brief summary of this. I will add, the opening of this for me is quite sharp, almost headache-inducing sharp. I never would think to pair carnation, violet, cedar and patchouli. Those notes just sounds like either they would be very incredibly strange pairings that just don’t work, or oddly wonderful. For me, this is not oddly wonderful. You know how sometimes you may look at notes in a fragrance and think, that will never be pleasant, but somehow ends up being pleasant..? Yeah, not so with this one for me. I kept waiting for this to dry down to something somewhat pleasant, and that never happened for me. If anything for me this dried down to a very powdery sort of a masculine deodorant type of scent. Not sure how that happens, but that is what I got. I don’t even now how to classify this, it is not fresh, it is not green, it is not spicy, it is not fruity, it is not sweet, it is not floral, it is not aquatic; I get none of that with this. I guess if you like unique and different perfumes, this may be something you may want to check out. It certainly is not a run of the mill (nor feminine imo) fragrance, it is definitely different and unique; so there is that.
FWIW, I spray fragrances on my clothing or spray and ‘walk into’ a fragrance, so the fragrance does not mix with my skin so much. I even tested this on a blouse hanging in the bedroom and got the same effect.
To me, this smells like a cheapie-drugstore fragrance that a grandmother would wear. It is not something I would think would be of this price point. But yes, the first 30 minutes or so of wearing this is indeed torture for me, as well. In fact this made me downright nauseous. I would not wear this to a crowd or a gathering. Sorry to those that love and rave about this, but this pairing of the notes in this just does not sit well with me at all. Wear-time, if you like this, does seem to last all day so there is that.

I did a blind buy with this perfume. It smelled terrible for the first 30 minutes, and then settled into a pleasant smell. I’m still going to be leery about wearing this though, because those first 30 minutes were torture, I stunk so bad.

This stuff reeks, smells like a homeless old lady, made me gag. luckily only a large sample to throw out.

This is so refined and beautiful. It stays close to the skin and smells a little mysterious without being heavy. It’s a perfect fragrance to live in, I never feel like it’s wearing me. There’s a lot of violet at the beginning but it never gets too powdery–it’s balanced by some green notes. The drydown, which happens slowly over the course of the day, is beautiful. A vanillic warmth with some spicy green and woodsy notes. It’s feminine without being girly or too mature. If I put it on in the morning I can smell this gorgeous warmth on myself as I’m falling asleep.
I went a while without wearing this and smelled it on a friend when I hugged her. It smelled beautiful. This reminded me how I love this fragrance. You can only smell it up close, it’s classic while still feeling young, and it has loads of violet, which I adore.

Reminds me of a lighter, fresher Tom Ford Violet Blonde and Guerlain Insolence EDP. I think anyone who likes these two will like Balenciaga Paris (although Insolence is sweeter and not so earthy, due to its berry notes). I own & enjoy all three.
For comparison, here are their notes from parfumo.net:
Balenciaga Paris (2010):
Bergamot, Oakmoss, Carnation, Spices, Labdanum, Patchouli, Pepper, Violet, Vetiver, Cedarwood
Tom Ford Violet Blonde EDP (2011):
Top Notes – Mandarin, Pink pepper, Violet leaf
Heart Notes – Iris, Iris butter, Jasmine, Jasmine sambac
Base Notes – Benzoin, Musk, Vetiver, Suede, Cedar
Guerlain Insolence EDP (2008):
Top Notes – Red berries
Heart Notes – Iris, Orange blossom, Violet
Base Notes – Woods, Sandalwood, Tonka bean
“Violet chypre” is how Balenciaga Paris has been described. Contains Violet, Iris, Oakmoss (making it chypre) and woody notes Vetiver and Cedar. Leans toward cool, masculine, and sophisticated — yet outdoorsy — to me. It has a British, regal, sophisticated, masterpiece-theater quality to me.
Again, like other violet scents, Balenciaga brings Jane Eyre to my mind — a vintage feel yet wild & outdoorsy at the same time. Works well in cool weather. Coincidentally, British actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, the face of Balenciaga Paris, once played Jane Eyre in one of its many movie versions (opposite William Hurt).
I appreciate that the pretty clear bottle came in a dark drawstring cover (to protect scent from light damage) — what a classy touch from Balenciaga!

I first became acquainted with Balenciaga Paris about 3 years ago. I liked it very much at the time, but never got around to purchasing any. Recently I’ve gotten several sample vials. I was surprised to find that I like it more now than I did a few years ago. I’m not good at describing the various notes in perfumes, but I can say it is floral without being flowery, unique without being weird, and sophisticated without being dated. Wearing it makes me feel like I’m wearing something very chic and right for any occasion. I’ve actually gone through 3 of Nordstrom’s sample vials, so now I will be getting a full bottle – something I rarely ever do!

I love this! It’s sophisticated and sexy and my husband actually asked what I was wearing! This is a guy who doesn’t think it’s necessary to own more than one fragrance! His usual comments when I ask what he thinks of a fragrance are “Smells like perfume to me” or “Smells like soap”. A perfume lover he is not. But I had a sample of this from my SL at Nordstrom’s who just wanted me to give it a test run. Reading about it didn’t really interest me a whole lot, but a free sample-who can resist? I was really surprised! It suits me and I find myself reaching for it several times a week! Of course I had to purchase a bottle after hubby complimented me wearing it! A lovely fragrance. I won’t go into the notes, etc. as you can go to Fragrantica for that. My reviews usually consist of my general impressions of a fragrance and with Balenciaga Paris they are most positive. I love wearing it. Longevity is my only complaint. I have to re-spray after about 3-4 hrs. but after the great buy on E-Bay I made for a slightly used bottle, I don’t mind! I highly recommend at least sampling this beauty! For grown- ups only!

This has become by far my new favourite, and I usually don’t play favourites with fragrance. I even bought the shower gel and body lotion. As everyone else has noted, predominant violet and a touch of sweetness, held in check by a dusting of pepper and dry woods. It doesn’t list strawberry as a note, but this is what I think of when I smell the sweetness and I see it as a nod to Le Dix, which also had a strawberry note with violet. I miss Le Dix but I have to admit this is a lot more modern and wearable today, in an everyday context. It doesn’t have a strong presence but it is sort of quietly glamourous. Something about it reminds of Mona di Orio’s Carnation, which is another fragrance I miss. It has that old-fashioned face powder vibe. Despite the violet it smells ballet-pink to me. Love the bottle too.

I received a small sample of this perfume & I like this scent a lot, I normally like sweet smells but this is more mature & I like to wear it for work. However the lasting power is just not there… I find it’s faded after only 3-4 hours. Based on that I don’t think I would purchase the full-sized bottle.
