I debated getting this for a long time simply because the price was too high for a product type that has such a fickle life span (in my experience). This is worth the price. What makes it worth it is not one or two things, but the overall extreme attention to detail in the packaging, product (color and formula), felt-tip.
Packaging: I didn’t think the slimmer barrel would help make it easier to apply, but in being so slim the pen is *considerably* easier to navigate around the eye area, along the lash line. I would have never considered other styles to be cumbersome in packaging, (Hourglass, Chante, BB, YSL) and hinder slightly in use, but comparatively, they are.
Product (color): truly not an inky black or deep black, but what BB’s caviar e/l is to black, this is what this shade is. The shade and formula are what really have me hooked. The shade is a black softened by something of a brown (perhaps?), with no distinct brown undertones, the shade remains cool without being a garish, harsh black yet something in the color softens it a bit. It’s the difference between the black you see on an animal vs a man-made, chemical black. How the natural black looks softer, smoother and pulls the whole picture together perfectly whereas the other stands out and can jostle the overall effect. If you’re going for striking black, there are other shades I’d go with over this (YSL).
Product (formula): not the liquidy, nail-polish vinyl of waterproof formulas, but a soft, thinner liquid, without being truly opaque yet not so sheer that I have to run over the line a few times. What makes the formula stand out in my mind is that it dries a tad faster than the others, which lends it to a crisper overall finished look. Also, in not running, smears (potentially) less on application, Goes where you put it, stays. Just a very clean, crisp formula. Not waterproof, very long wearing and not affected by my perpetually oily lids. If I go over to deepen, no blotchy bald patches like with my Chante or Hourglass as they wear out. Flow of ink is utterly smooth and perfect.
Felt-tip: at first glance, near identical to Chante and Hourglass, but the tip (IME) seems finer and enables a finer, slimmer line, whereas the Hourglass and Chante, no matter how I tried, couldn’t give the me most precise line, always a little smeary, always a little thicker than I’d like. This pen practically applies itself and the felt tip is the perfect balance of stiff enough to create a slim line yet soft enough not to irritate.
I never thought these details could be perfected, but they are in this. Absolutely flawless and worth the money.
