This shampoo has helped my hair so much!!!! After a bad experience with Aussie Volume Shampoo (handfuls of hair fell out), I decided to give this a try. I have very little shedding with this shampoo and matching conditioner. My hair was also very dry from chemical processing and now it is looking soft, healthy and shiny. This shampoo gets my scalp and hair clean without stripping it and drying it out or making it oily or limp. I also use it on my daughter’s as well with equally great results. We have very fine, curly hair. EDIT: I have to shampoo twice with this shampoo and not use it with the JBCO conditioner.

Oh dear. Perhaps not best for blondes. After 2 weeks and half a bottle of this, my partner said “I hate to tell you this, but your hair is green”. He was right! I wanted it to repair my ultra damaged haystack, but my ponytail is now a swamp green colour. I’ll have to redo the colour. The shampoo is a very dark brown pigment and I guess it just dyed it. It did leave my hair very soft but make no mistake, you can feel the oil, your roots will never be squeaky clean.
Beware if you have a light colour!

(Asthma/allergy commentary at the end) I have 3a/3b medium long curls, I dye my hair, and I have psoriasis of the scalp. This shampoo works EXTREMELY well on my psoriasis, even better than Nizoral, but unlike Nizoral it doesn’t strip the color from my hair. I apply it dry to the areas that get flaky and the areas where the hair is thinner or stressed, then spend several minutes thoroughly massaging it in. Then I put my head under the sink faucet and turn on the cold water just long enough to move the shampoo to my ends. I gently scrunch the shampoo through, then go back to the sink to rinse my hair thoroughly in cold water. I probably only have the shampoo in my wet hair for one minute or less.
I’ve used this shampoo once a week for three weeks. The first two times I had zero color loss. The third time I got my hands wet before massaging it through my dry hair, and when I rinsed the water had a hint of my colour in it. So don’t do that, keep it dry until almost the end to preserve your color.
And I highly, HIGHLY recommend this shampoo for psoriasis. Also castor oil in general seems to help. Towards the end of the week when flaky patches start to develop on my scalp I can rub a little plain clear castor oil on the spot and the flakes disappear. They’re not sitting there, nice and moisturized, they’re just plain gone.
For my fellow asthma and perfume allergy sufferers: I’ve had no issue with the smell of this shampoo. Other products in this line irritate my lungs a little but this one doesn’t aggravate my symptoms at all.

I don’t shampoo my hair too often, so I like to use something a little heavy duty to get rid of any build up, but still need it to be sulfate free since I have a brazilian blowout. This is great for that. I love the scent (smells like play-doh) but I can see how someone might not enjoy it. I might repurchase one day, but I plan on trying Kinky Curly Come Clean next. Would still recommend though.

I have 2b/c hair. this shampoo didn’t make my hair grow noticeably faster but it helped with softeners and shine. it is a little on the oily side (potential for build up or to weigh down)

My mom is Caucasian with 2A hair and I am biracial (mixed with African American/Caucasian) with 2C/3A hair and we both love this shampoo. I actually started using this first and then bought a bottle for my mom. She thought the brand was only for a particular race of people and that Shea Moisture products would be “too heavy” or “too rich” for her oily, nearly straight hair. However, I’ve explained to her and broken down that hair type is how we should care for hair, not based on ethnicity. Now that she’s gotten rid of her sulfate-filled, ultra-drying cheap drugstore shampoo and tried Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shampoo, she LOVES Shea Moisture. I urge others to not limit their beauty options because they think a brand is for a certain demographic. Whether you’re white, black, Hispanic, Asian, or Arab, you probably will find a Shea Moisture shampoo that will benefit your hair type. Better yet, no matter your race you will probably find that not using sulfate-filled shampoos alone will benefit your hair.
I shampoo using Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shampoo every 2 days. This shampoo does such a good job at NOT drying and stripping hair of natural oils that I don’t even use a conditioner after (something I couldn’t do before). I have soft baby fine, non-color treated, healthy, low density hair, so I actually follow this shampoo with argan oil once I get out of the shower (I basically use the LOC method, just without the cream… so I guess the LO method lol). I seal in the water (aka moisture) with a small amount of lightweight argan oil and let my hair air-dry, and all is well. I don’t use heat on my hair, but IF I did I would follow my argan oil with a silicone like It’s A 10 Miracle Leave In (the silicones help coat your hair and protect it from heat damage… You might have to use a clarifying sulfate shampoo more often if you use silicone products).
Just as a side note, because I live in an area with VERY hard water I do have to clarify my hair once every two weeks. I can tell all the minerals from the water build up on my hair and it starts looking dry for no reason. I shampoo with VO5 Kiwi Lime Shampoo and then I can tell it’s back to normal and receiving moisture. Depending on your area’s water type you might have to do the same. But for a daily, biweekly, or weekly shampoo, most hair types will do well with Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil shampoo.

It leaves my hair greasy – first day is bearable but day number 2 I look like I’m badly in need of a wash . I usually have no problems washing every other day . I guess life is too short to keeping using bad shampoo

I bought this shampoo as I was looking for something with castor oil in it – ready about how it helps with hair growth – and as I saw all the great reviews went for it. I have quite dry hair, naturally, and also because of using hair straighteners a lot. I used for a year Davines products and they really brought my dehydrated hair back to life. This product although instantly seems to make my hair soft it actually leaves them drier but at the same time oily and heavy too. Maybe it’s the clarifying effect but I ended up getting really dry hair setting back all the progress I made with Davines. I am not going to use this anymore on a weekly basis but maybe once a month for clarifying purposes, going back to Davines shampoo which is great for dehydrated hair.

My teenage son has dandruff, oily hair, and very sensitive skin. We tried Nizoral, T-sal, Head and Shoulders, etc. and nothing was helping. This however has pretty much cleared his dandruff completely and leaves his naturally blonde/fine but abundant/slightly wavy hair soft and shiny.
