Let’s get one thing out of the way – this candle smells AWFUL. The smell is so bad I couldn’t even keep it in my closet when the box was still wrapped in plastic. It totally permeated my bedroom. Now if you do happen to like the scent, you will be delighted because the candle has excellent throw – can’t fault it in that respect.
Personally I don’t like the scent and, based on the negative reactions it elicited from everyone who caught a whiff of it, I don’t think most people would appreciate it either. (That’s not to say nobody would, just that this is a polarising fragrance). It has a very pungent ‘green’ accord, like an offensive mix of naturopathic herbal remedies gone bad. It also reminds me of Pernod because there’s a strong aniseed note.
Since my dad is a big fan of Pernod, I passed the candle on to him (waste not, want not, right?). Now my dad is pretty much indifferent to scented products but this one made an impression on him – ‘different’ was how he described it rather diplomatically. (My mum was less diplomatic and ordered him to remove it from their bedroom if he wanted to stay there.)
So all of this probably raises the question of why I bought the candle in the first place. Basically, I liked the packaging and I reeeealllly like Allen Ginsberg so…I wanted the jar essentially. (It really is a nice jar though). Sadly, the scent literally made me want to HOWL (sorry to any Ginsberg fans reading this, I just couldn’t resist).
Would not rebuy. Will, however, keep the jar.
