I have horribly disfiguring dyshidrotic eczema on my right hand, and I have struggled for years to find something other than steroid creams to apply. I did find some success with a Neosporin Eczema cream (which I did write a review about), but I’m not sure if this has stopped working or just been open for a couple of years and so lost its effectiveness.
I was researching another cream, and I came across a blog where a lady used Elta Tar. She said that this has been great on her eczema and has really reduced the blistering and cracking. So I ordered a huge jar of this online.
It is a dark yellow solid which liquefies on contact with warm skin. You only need to use a tiny amount as it spreads easily (and it spreads everywhere if you aren’t careful where you put your hands). The only downside – it smells really bad, like engines and heavy industry (I grew up near a power plant and it smells just like that), but the cream is coal tar and will obviously not be fragrant!
Since my hands are at the itchy, flaky stage in some areas, this coal tar cream works to make the dry skin shed faster while the skin underneath is protected and moisturized, and much less itchy. I have noticed that the dry skin falls off (or can be picked off) easily without leaving any sore, open areas. As for the blistering stage of dyshidrosis, I will try this when I inevitably get another breakout, but this cream works great when the skin is dry.
