I received this as part of the 2015 Sephora Beauty Insider birthday gift as well. Unfortunately, I don’t understand the hype and love for this product. This product has no scent or taste to it. The shade I have Rikugien, is a soft rose color when swatched on the back of my hand. However, on my lips, I find the color to be very sheer. It takes on a slightly metallic, frosted finish as well. My lips are not very pigmented and the product can only be built up so much.
Even after three layers, I found that the product was not true to its color swatch. From the product description of “rich, color-bright pigments”, I was expecting semi-opaque to opaque color but I was disappointed. Wear time is pretty average for me, about 2-3 hours without drinking or eating. Thankfully, I did not find i drying but I also did not find it moisturizing either. It would have been nice if the product were retractable, instead of needing to be sharpened. I am glad that I was able to try this in a deluxe sample size rather than purchase it, because it isn’t worth the $26 price tag in my opinion.

I have the sephora-special (ha!!) in Rikugien that was my bday gift (accompanied by Cruella & a black eyeliner); I love what a generous gift provided to us. These are ~$25!! I kno Cruella is matte but both are gr8, also like Belle de Jour but that is not on topic. Sharpening these makes me sad. I sharpened them in my giant Rimmel e/s sharpener which ate the pencils but now I have UD Grindhouse/MAC but I hate seeing my pencil going into the wastebasket. I wish it turned up like Clinique! They came up w a way for the eyeliner to not only twist up but also have a sharpener for the tip but they can’t make their lip pencils auto? These are terrif thou the colors are beautiful & special so I would rebuy these, they are hard-to-dupe & feels fantastic on the lips. Lurve satin & matte!

Getting Rikugien in my Sephora birthday gift was one of the best parts about getting older this year. A lovely nude rose with a hint of peach, it brightens the rest of my face with its muted satin glow. A surefire cure for a case of the beauty blahs.

As some of you may know, I love a good brown lip almost as much as I love my own self. Almost. I had been drawn to Het Loo ever since I purchased (and later returned) the NARS Audacious Lipstick in Deborah. I was always looking at the Velvet and Satin Lip pencils, drooling over the colors I knew I would never wear. Het Loo was always the one that caught my eye, mainly because of it’s peachy/cognac color.
I eyed the Het Loo at Nordstroms after purchasing my new favorite thing (Pressed Powder in Mountain) but decided to go to Sephora and have a look around. Lo and behold at Sephora sat the last solitary tube of NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Het Loo, and I swatched it against Bansar, which was also the single tube left. I almost bought Bansar. Almost.
I pulled an Elaine Benes from Seinfeld and walked outside into the bright sunlight (to take a phone call, I swear!) and glanced at the Bansar on my lips. Too pink. Not enough brown. Back inside to Sephora I went to the purchase counter, with Het Loo in hand.
What I love about the satin lip pencils are their texture. They go on so smooth, so beautifully, they apply just as a NARS product should. The packaging is second to none. Once again, NARS sways me every time with their matte packaging (I’m a sucker for tactile things and texture) and I love the corresponding color caps and bottoms. I really do want to make Het Loo a staple in my makeup bag, but on wearing it to a date, I noticed a couple of things that made me sigh the sigh of sadness.
I was under the impression that these pencils were twist ups, like most other soft and creamy lip pencils on the market are. I was quite surprised, and more than a little dissapointed that you have to sharpen these like you would a lip liner. Also, I don’t like that since the pencil part of the color itself is black, there’s the potential for the shavings to transfer onto the color. Who wants tiny black specks on their lips? Nasty.
The second thing I have an issue with is the color. It is very sheer. I was expecting a very bold lip color, much like Wet N Wild’s Fergie Soft Matte whatever lip pencils, or even ELF’s matte lip crayons. On me, Het Loo is like a very muted terracotta color (I LOVE terracotta). I was hoping to be able to build up the color so it looks a bit more dramatic, but by itself it’s just very subtle and muted, and doesn’t really show as anything special. On fair girls this might be a nice 90’s brown, but for us lighter skinned women of color it just looks like a really nice nude. It looks like a nude on me.
I’m not giving up on this color though. I usually layer it over LA Girl Auto Endless Lipliner in True Brown, or underneath Makeup Forever Lipstick in Chestnut. Both of those are extremely pleasant and nostalgic for me, and I love the way Het Loo pairs with similar shades in the brown family.
At $26, your wallet will definitely not thank you for purchasing this little gem. However, it’s such wonderful quality that I can overlook the price and appreciate its uses as a layering piece.

Nars Satin lip pencils!
If you set these in a boxing ring, they are not all made equal.
I have more pigmented lips, and do not usually have a problem with lipstick formulas (MAC, Urban Decay, Shu Uemura, Nars regular l/s, Giorgio Armani, drugstore ones ETC).
There are some of the satin lip pencils that will sink into my lips and just make them look parched, strange, and sad. This is not something I experience with the Velvet Matte lip pencils.
Yu is a lovely hot bright cool pink, and wore off as a pretty pink stain. Luxembourg is a pink-tinged red that is brighter than Majella. I’d say it’s the satin version of Dragon Girl. I did not have a problem with these two on my lips.
Lodhi does wear funnily on my lips, and I can’t seem to bring myself to purchase this because even upon application it requires so much work to smooth out and get out of the crevices of my lips. Majella wore well until it began wearing off throughout the day, in which I had darker red lines into my lips, which I did not enjoy as I only purchased the velvet lip pencil as they were low maintenance.
The Rikugien that we received in our birthday present from Sephora is a lovely office appropriate rose, although I do not reach for it too often as I love my brights.
Depending on which one you pick up, it’ll be nicer to the lines on your lips. Do not expect these to wear too long, they are also prone to bleeding, which is why I must say that these are NOT for everyone and I am still happier with the Velvet Mattes.

I own these in Palais Royal and Isola Bella and love both. They leave behind a nice stain that lasts all day for me and are so easy and convenient to carry in my purse. Great for lazy, casual, light makeup people like me. (I am also a huge fan of the matte pencils and lipglosses…especially the cult “Dolce Vita”)

Love these! I have Yu – a beautiful bright pink, and just purchased Rikugien. Have no idea how to pronounce that or what the heck it means. But the color is a perfect mauve-peach, very neutral and goes with everything. Absolutely love it – it is one of those you can put on in the car without a mirror because it is close to a naturel lip color. You can also change it up with different lip liners to be more brown, mauve or pink. But I agree that the NARS either goes bad quickly or the just don’t put any scent in their lipsticks to mask the chemical/wax smell. I have a huge drawer FULL of lipsticks and never throw any away because the better brands like Dior, Guerlain, Chanel, YSL last forever. I have had some for over ten years. The drawer keeps them in a cool dark place and I only take them out when I an converting my vanity drawer to the current season. I find Bobby Brown to be the same way – they both need to change the formula. So no perfect score 🙁

When I was desperately trying to find a good lip product to wear for my wedding last month I was searching for two things: Long wearing and pigmented colors. This product is those things and more; it’s glossy and creamy but has excellent staying power, which isn’t often true for creamy products.

I’m very much in love with the NARS Satin Lip Pencils and at the same time I despise them.
Texturally, the Satin Lip Pencils are phenomenal compared to their sisters–the Velvet Matte lip pencils. Where those feel dry and slowly drain my lips of any moisture as the day wears on, the satin lip pencils are creamy and comfortable. I can wear them endlessly and my lips aren’t worse for wear. I don’t even mind that they aren’t twist-up. I actually prefer lip pencils that need to be sharpened since I like a precise point when applying lip color, particularly dark colors. (Twist-ups can get dull with prolonged use which can result in a sloppy application.) I also love the wide range of shades. Isola Bella, the peachy neutral shade, is probably my favorite from the entire collection and one of my favorite lip products ever. It’s effortlessly pretty and goes with everything.
But this is where the love ends.
My biggest issue with these pencils and the reason why I said I would not re-buy them if I lost them or ran out is because they go bad so quickly! I take excellent care of my lip products since I am a lipstick junkie and have a massive collection. I know the odds that I’ll use up all my lipsticks before they go off is rather low but I want to keep them around for as long as possible so that I can get some use out of them. I make sure all of my lipsticks are kept under optimal conditions as much as possible. Despite all of this, many of my NARS satin lip pencils have already turned in an unacceptably short amount of time. Lipsticks that I bought well before satin lip pencils ever entered my collection are still going strong. My satin lip pencils, on the other hand, are starting to have that dreaded chemical-funkiness about them that means they need to find a new home at the bottom of the trash can. Some I’ve only owned for 6-8 months. At $25 a pop, that is just not worth it at all for me since I have a hard enough time finishing one lipstick in 6-8 months with daily use.
When my beloved Isola Bella went bad quickly, I wrote it off as a bad batch and repurchased it since it is one of my most used lipsticks. However, when I started to notice my other shades doing the same thing, they were binned and won’t be repurchased. Thankfully with a few exceptions, none of the shades are so unique that I can’t find something similar in a formula that lasts longer. I’m sad that they’re such poor performers over the long run because they are such a good product otherwise, but products that go off before I can finish them is a massive deal-breaker for me. As an aside, I will add that the Velvet Matte lip pencils on the other hand have lasted a very long time for me. I’ve owned a few for years now and they still smell and perform just like they did when I first purchased them.
In summation, if you’re someone who has a small, curated collection of favorites and get lots of use out of each of your products then go for it. However if you’re someone who has a large stash and need your products to last beyond a season or two, the Velvet Matte pencils may be the answer for you. They’re the same idea though, in my opinion, not as great as the Satin ones.

Love these! I also have Rikugien and it is just a gorgeous classy natural mauve. I plan on getting a fun color next, like Timanfaya, which is a poppy orange. I have the Urban Decay Grindhouse pencil sharpener and it works with this product.
