UPDATE and compete revision of my review:
This is a bit of a finicky product, but it’s worth figuring out. It has a perfect score of 1 on EWG, both on ingredient safety and on broad range sunscreen protection — in short, it’s as good a sunscreen as you can get.
I have bought this three times in five years. The formula was changed sometime in 2015 I think, and the tapioca starch was completely removed from the formulation, so the grainy texture is gone. It’s still, however, a very thick and sticky cream, which can both leave a white cast, and make your skin shiny/oily. It’s taken me all this time to figure out how to wear it, but I think I finally have: it needs to go on top of a light moisturizer, and (this is important) on a slightly moistened skin. You can use a facial mist, or you can dampen your hands with just tap water and pat this onto your skin before proceeding with the sun cream.
If you do it like this, the cream will spread far more easily. The white cast will be horrific at first, but give it a few seconds and it will completely disappear, to give you beautifully smooth skin. People who know me, ask me if I’m wearing foundation since I started doing this. Also, no oiliness later on in the day. Just perfect.
For the record, I have formerly oily, presently normal skin but with very enlarged pores, which reacts to everything it dislikes — whether too heavy OR too drying — with grease. I am using NYR Wild Rose Daily Moisture SPF 30 on top of Biologique Recherche’s Creme Dermopurifiante, on skin cleansed with BR’s Lait U and BR’s Lotion P50. I also get good results from the sun cream on skin cleansed with plain honey, and moisturized with Weleda’s Pomegranate Day Cream. Damp skin before application of the sun cream is the key to getting it to play nice. A /light/ moisturizer underneath is better than bare skin, but a heavy one (or even a medium one) is worse. I hope this helps.
I had said I wouldn’t buy again, but now I almost certainly will. On the negative side, it has a short shelf life of only three months after you open it (due to the rosehip oil, I imagine), and a bit of a medicinal smell to me (from the rosemary essential oil they use as a preservative). That said, rosehip oil is a magical thing, and my other half says to him it mostly smells of roses. So YMMV.
I have updated the ingredients list above.

It’s rubbish. Horrible grainy texture. Really irritated my neck. I know natural SPF products are rare but there is no point bringing out a product that doesnt work – it just damages the brand.
I love many other of their products.

Update:
Ok, well 3 weeks on and I’m not smitten with this. Some issues have emerged and I’ve rapidly fallen out of love with it.
1. Texture – turns quite grainy sometimes on application, quite unpleasant. I’ve tried using this with and without moisturiser underneath: if I use moisturiser, application is smoother but it feels thick and heavy; if I don’t, it’s grainy. I’m suspicious of the tapioca starch (first ingred listed)…
2. Exacerbates clogs around TOTM. Additionally, a few blackheads have developed on my cheeks after using this consistently, which I have never experienced before!
3. Too drying. My chin and around my nose are prone to dryness and after a few weeks, these were visibly flaking.
4. Not good in hot/humid conditions at all. I’ve been away for a long wkend since writing my original review, and in 30+ heat I ended up with a few white smears – not pretty.
It’s a real shame because I love the smell, ethos and availability of this product. I’ll try it again layered in winter when I’m happier using richer textured moisturisers, maybe it’ll come into its own. I’ll update again in a few months but for now, this offers no competition for Burnout at all. Lippies changed to 2 (from 4) and repurchase to No.
Original review:
This is an early review and I will update.
I was excited to hear about this product because there’s a serious lack of zinc based sun protection in the UK. I’ve got fussy skin, fairly reactive and does not tolerate silicones or chemical UV filters at all. I’ve been using Lavera Kids Neutral Spray SPF20 or Burnout SPF32 on my face without irritation/clogging/ill effects. But neither are perfect: the Lavera has that zincy white glow, and Burnout has to be shipped from the States – almost doubling the cost per tube.
I don’t know yet if Neal’s Yard have created the perfect solution because I’ve only been using this for a week, but so far so good.
Contains 19% micronised non-nano zinc oxide, has no white cast and a matt finish. 56% Soil Association certified organic. No mineral oils, synthetic fragrance/colour, silicones, parabens, EDTA or phthalates.
Strongly fragranced and EO heavy – but smells identical to the Wild Rose Beauty Balm to my nose and I have no (known) reactions to EOs, so I don’t mind.
Smooth and light but dry-feeling texture on application (feels almost chalky?), absorbs/dries quickly, feels comfortable on. Imperceptible to the eye when applied.
Of course you’d have to apply the full 1/4 tsp in order to get the full SPF30 and I am not applying that much, but for a moisturiser with SPF so far it’s pretty good.
Price is £23.50 for 50 ml (very expensive compared to Burnout at $18/100ml, but far easier to get hold of for me).
