FINALLY! A dark brown hair dye that actually comes out dark brown, not black!! I had bleached blonde hair for quite a few years, decided to take a break from the bleach to get my hair longer. Went for Colorsilk as it was on special for (NZ)$6 which is a really good price, and I saw it had no ammonia in it. Have used it a few times now since going back to brunette and each time it delivers. Quick developing time, doesn’t have too strong of a smell, leaves my hair feeling silky and shiny, and looks just like the box photo. In the past I’ve had so much trouble with my hair clinging to the colour since it is rather damaged and it would turn out black instead of dark brown. This is a nice warm dark BROWN. Very impressed.

Please forgive me if this review runs a little long but seeing as this is my go-to hair color and has been for the better part of a year, I have quite a bit to say about it..
First of all I purchased this completely unfamiliar with box dyes or dyes in general, because my hair had been bleached light blonde for 13 years by the time I decided to embrace my natural medium chestnut reddish brown roots in April of last year. After a brief stint as a redhead I let the brown take over and quickly decided my natural color needed some “oomph” so I bought this dye, dark mahogany brown, which is a shade or two darker than my natural color. I quickly fell in love.
So fast forward almost a year and I’m still using this. By now the bleach under my hair has grown out after 17 months, a few much needed cuts and trims and tons of babying, but I still have a bit of heat damage I’m working through.
This dye is, when first applied a couple shades darker than the lady on the box but after 3-4 washes it is pretty comparable. It does have a reddish undertone but then again so does my natural hair so I can’t really speak to that, but take note this is a warmer shade and very flattering on my light warm toned skin. It is natural looking and I do have many people assume it’s my natural color. It isn’t far off, and even though the color does fade somewhat after a couple weeks, I usually can’t tell and if I can, it doesn’t bother me. If your hair is blonde the fading might be more of an issue. A word of advice when using ammonia free dyes which don’t last as long: use a sulfate free shampoo and only wash hair when you really need to. Unless you have oily hair, your hair will thank you for it and the dye will look SO much better after the weeks roll by. I went sulfate free years ago and never looked back, having naturally fine, curly hair sulfates were not an option for me, but now that my hairs healthier I still adhere to a sulfate free routine and wash my hair max twice a week, because I want to postpone dyeing my hair again as long as possible to avoid further damage.
About the damage: I’ve yet to experience any evident damage from using this dye. I can’t speak to everyone’s experience but mine has thankfully been trauma free!!
I redo my roots about once a month and run the dye through my hair for about the last ten minutes. I find the color comes out evenly and its more than enough dye to cover my whole head even though I’ve got a ton of medium length hair. If your hair is ribcage length or longer you may want to invest in buying two boxes.
The price is obviously very reasonable and I often pick these up two for one or on sale. They are available everywhere even though this color does tend to run out quicker than other shades. I just always keep a few boxes laying around and also re-dye my real hair extensions this color when I dye my own hair. My extensions are originally the same color as my natural hair so they come out identical to mine after I dye it.
So, sorry for the novel but I really can’t say enough positive things about this dye and unless I go through some wild impulsive phase (and I’m getting to the age where that’s less and less likely) I will be continuing to use this color. It isn’t anything wild but very pretty and natural looking and easy to find and use.
** BTW the gloves do kinda suck but I still use them and don’t have any problem with application.

Very impressed with this dye- the color matches my dark brown hair and adds gorgeous dark copper highlights to my gray roots. It doesn’t smell bad is pretty easy to apply and lasts a good length of time. Best of all is the super cheap price! Happy with it and will continue to buy this brand.

I started using this because I wanted to tone my hair down from solid black to a softer, but still dark color. My natural hair is auburn, so I went for the dark auburn red on the cover of this hair color. I’ve always bought Revlon Colorsilk, so this was a shot in the dark. Luckily, it turned out great. It is a dark, rich auburn. It appears darker in low light, but really pops in the sun.
Colorsilk is my favorite because the price is a steal. The cheap gloves they give you are useless, but the product itself is great, and so is the after-color conditioner packet they give you (although it’s not really big enough.) What you get from this is what you want: Good quality hair dye that looks like the color on the box and lasts a long time.

I love this product.Just wanted to add that the colour does not come out darker on my hair.My undyed hair is dark brown, with dark auburn highlights,and this makes my hair slightly lighter.I would call it a med-dark.It does not fade at all,and I only redo when my roots show too much,about every10-12 weeks.

I use this color and the Dark Brown/Black the most. This goes on kinda dark, like a dark reddish brown/black , but then it does fade to a medium reddish brown, on me anyway! And when it fades, it matches my own natural medium golden brown hair, but with the gray. So, I really don’t have to color all that often when using this shade, since I really don’t mind the gray showing. It is a drying hair color, but I condition my hair anyway; and besides, it’s SO thin, I really don’t mind a little of the dryness as it makes it appear to have some kind of body!
Anyway, I find that the color shades are spot on, for me anyway. I have tried the reds as well, and my hair has always turned out as the shade on the box. LUCKY, I guess. Always had luck with this brand.

Revlon’s Colorsilk is one of the better at-home color kits on the market. There are pro’s and con’s, so I will list the ones I’m aware of, and you can make your decision:
Pro’s:
1. Very inexpensive. Retails between $2.50 and $4.00, depending on where you find it.
2. Ammonia-free. Definitely better for the hair than most colorants out there.
3. Minimal chemical smell. Some of the brands out there will literally send my husband running out of the room (and have me wishing I could go with him), but this one isn’t bad at all.
4. Color lasts quite well. I use Dark Mahogany Brown, and it was darker than I anticipated. It HELD in my hair for the whole month with no fading. I only re-colored because I had roots coming in, not because of fading.
5. Leaves hair shiny and soft. Always a big, big plus!!!
Con’s
1. Packaging is flimsy. The gloves are the cheap, flimsy, baggy-style. I recommend you invest in a box of latex gloves from Sally’s or somewhere so you don’t have to deal with them.
2. Solution is runny. This makes it a little harder to work with. It drips easily and soaks into the hair so quickly that it’s a little harder to distribute than the thicker, creamier formulations out there.
3. The actual color you get is going to be darker than the color on the box. My Dark Mahogany looked like a nice, rich, dark brown on the box…in reality, it was more of a natural black with a hint of brown. Not so much what I was looking for.
4. Conditioner comes in a pouch rather than a tube. Messy and difficult to save for later.
Despite the con’s, I plan to continue using this product in the future due to the lack of ammonia and the condition in which it leaves my hair. I have very damaged hair from color-treating it every month, and I really need an ammonia-free, yet permanent, color. This one fits the bill. I plan to try to gradually go a bit lighter with the color (to my aforementioned plan of a rich, deep brown), but overall I’m happy with the product itself. Be aware that the color will be darker than that on the box and make allowances for that, buy some decent gloves (you can get a box of 100 at Sally’s for about $3), and plan to use your own conditioner. Even with those extra expenses, this is still a steal, and better for your hair than most at-home colors, to boot!
