EDIT: update—this has numbed my lips, dental anaesthetic-style. Creepy and uncomfortable, to say the least. What’s in this stuff, anyhow? I’m going to have to bin this, I’m afraid.
Original review:
I love a good lip stain. I pine for the days of Laura Mercier’s Crimson pot stain as well as the Vincent Longo stains which are now only available online (if at all). I saw e.l.f’.’s offering while running an errand in a big box store and, having remembered a write-up I’d read, jumped on it and got the Rouge one. Well, this serves its purpose as something nice for those no-makeup/minimum makeup, lounging about/running about/sportsing days. It’s definitely on the low-colour payoff side, so two coats are necessary. This does have a nasty, bitter chemical taste, but most stains (including the famed K-beauty stains) do. I top mine with a fruity balm or a minty gloss and I’m fine. At $4, you can’t really go wrong.

Love, love, love!! Have two in Dewy Berry and Dewy Nude. Berry is more of a dark, pinky stain and Nude is actually orangey-red. They can both be quite sheer with one wash or built up for more color after 2-3 layers. I use both as easily blendable cheek stains as well. I can’t feel this lip stain at all and, if applied to dry lips, will truly stain – make sure to blot off lip balm before use so there’s no transfer. It’s also not drying and doesn’t make my lips peel. I also like using this stain for the Korean ombre lip look, and at $4 it’s an extremely cheap alternative to KBeauty or other stains. The packaging has cracked down the side on one of my tubes on the applicator end, but it hasn’t affected the usability or caused any leaks. The only thing I will say is that it has a bit of a bitter taste when wet, so make sure it dries down fully before doing anything.

I use the nude (not berry) shade and love it. Have a hard time finding in stores, will definitely pickup a couple next time I find them – $4!
Edit 8/2018 – I still like this stain and carry it in my purse, but it’s fairly drying and needs a balm over it. I’m still on the hunt for a natural stain with more moisture.

This is an excellent lip stain. I’m so glad I found this.
I have it in Dewy Berry, and it was $4 (I think). The tube is really sturdy and compact, and I’m not stressed about it leaking all over the contents of my bag. Dewy Berry is a self-explanatory shade. It looks berry-leaning-rosy with one layer, but can definitely be deepened by adding more layers. It’s not drying, and doesn’t cling to texture on lips! It has a slight taste, it’s not great, but not awful. A slight cooling effect. Unlike most lip stains I’ve tried, this applies easily—the gel is liquidy but just viscous enough, and it coats lips evenly. I apply with the doe-foot applicator, rub it into my lips with a finger, LET DRY between coats, and usually top with something once it sets. I can barely feel it on, and it lasts fairly well. It’s not bulletproof, but it does stain, especially if you layer coats.
I can’t speak for the other shades, but Dewy Berry imparts the most translucently luscious berry tint. It’s perfect for summer. This is honestly in the top 5 lip stains I’ve ever tried. (Anyone remember the old Nars stains? They were PERFECT.)

I REALLY like this lipstain. It’s not drying like a lot that I’ve tried, has next to no scent, and is the perfect fix for people who don’t like to feel like there’s anything on their lips. When this dries down it’s undetectable and it lasts.
I got it in the shade “Dewy Nude” which is definitely a bit more red than I was expecting, but that’s not a bad thing since I have very deep pink lips and most “nudes” make me look dead. This made my lips look healthy and flushed, with next to no effort.
The packaging is also very cute and compact. Good job, E.L.F!

This is the ultimate lazy girl lip colour. Easy to apply, stays on for quite awhile, and fades off nicely. Looks natural, but keeps me from looking washed out.

I bought all 3 of these because I wasn’t sure what would look good on me. I tried Red Orange Wash first, and did one layer on my lips and it was a sheer red orange flush that leaned more natural than bold. I put a second layer on and WOW, this transformed to a nice bold stain. This is watery and will need several minutes to dry while you let your lips rest and don’t move them around much. I tried to talk on the phone while this was wet and I moved it around too much and had to take it off and start completely over. The second time, I waited for 5 minutes before I started doing stuff. I did a tissue test a little bit of color does come off on the tissue, but my lips don’t look unevenly colored so I’m not bothered. I put chapstick on after it dried and the color hasn’t budged much. I’ll have to wear one of these to work and see how it lasts through the day. For right now, my first impression is that this product is a good buy. These were $4 at Target. I’d love it if they released more colors!
I’ve uploaded a picture of me wearing one coat of Dewy Berry. It looks like my lips are naturally a pretty pink! Love it.

I got this for free, part of a gift with purchase off the E.L.F. website. I find this stuff to be very crappy, when it comes to how it goes on as well as it’s staying power too. Plus, it smells sorta weird as well. This is good to give to a young pre-teen to wear, but as an adult, no way is this stuff worth purchasing at all. Definitely don’t waste your money on this crap at all!

Love these for a natural, pretty look which lasts half the day and is easy to touchup. I have the red orange shade; love it and sometimes layer it over felt-tip lip marker stains (Kiko’s are what I’m using now but many brands including e..f. make these) to slightly change or deepen the shade. I love a really natural look and this gives it! Neither hydrating nor drying. These last longer than almost any other lip product and wear off without leaving a ring or in flakes.

I bought this in “Pink Splash,” which looks scarily dark in the tube, but comes out as a beautiful summery reddish pink that can look warm or cool, depending on what you wear it with. I’m a lip stain aficionado; I like to use stains as a base for lipstick, to prolong the latter’s wear. I’ve tried many many lip stains, pricey and otherwise, and this e.l.f. stain ranks right at the top in terms of quality. It applies easily and evenly, doesn’t feel drying (it isn’t moisturizing, either, but that’s the nature of stains). It adds plenty of [sheer] color, but does not look lipstick-y, at ALL. It wears for hours, even with balm, gloss, or lipstick on top. I love using this as a base, to avoid that annoying “ring-around-the-mouth” effect that occurs when lipstick begins to wear off. This stain does eventually wear off, but only after hours of wear including eating and drinking, and even then it looks better than many long-wear lip products do. It lengthens the wear of lipstick worn on top of it significantly, and I really like it for that purpose. I also love that this stain is cruelty-free and inexpensive. I only wish it came in about 100 shades!
